Fitting. Truth is I’d rather live in Centralia than Portland.

With Portland destroyed, the red counties can then become greater Idaho.

The total loss of Portland could be the best thing to happen in America in this century

Nice way to heat, but I don’t think there’s truly an extinct volcano situation, as Mt St Helen showed us. It’s just a matter of time until it activates once again.

Geothermal heating. We have a Conservatory a few miles from us that uses it.
They have pipes sunk hundreds of feet down.

You forgot the Caribbean chain of volcanic islands (Leeward) including Montserrat.

Azores, too. Earth’s crust is still changing.

We need a WEF/UN-sponsored tax to fight Global Crustal Change!

And an aspy/auty 16 year old with no sense of humor attempting to shame us into paying in an unintentionally comedic fashion.

Shucks! No biblical Wrath of God type activity, just some steam pipes! (Provided the video of degraded pavement is the same location and not some other place....)

Steam spotted rising from asphalt on a residential street near Rocky Butte

And he added, correctly, “I bet you anything that it is human produced.”

Hannah Schafer with the Portland Bureau of Transportation told KOIN 6 News their crews checked it out and determined this is not a cause for concern at this time.
snip...
Their sewer crew found the issue came from a private property between a couple apartment complexes which use steam heat.

A resident of one apartment complex told a member of PBOT’s sewer crew that property management has been aware of the issue and it had been going on for six months or longer.

Even though it turned out not to be Dante’s Peak, Burns said he was glad KOIN 6 News checked out the issue.

“It has not been erupting in the past 97,000 years and, in fact, in the Portland area none of what we call the Boring Lava Volcanoes have erupted. The last one was 57,000 years ago,” he said. “I’m glad you guys are responding to this.”

Mt. Tabor is a small cinder cone in SE Portland, well within city limits. Back in early 1980, when Mt. Saint Helens was starting to show activity, some of us were thinking about burning a few tires at the top of Mt. Tabor early some morning, but we didn’t.

Unless there are underground steam pipes... like NYC?

That's what I was thinking too ... a lot of big cities have centralized steam heating for DT buildings, since it keeps fuel trucks out of the Downtown

Otherwise, it's free, clean energy!

Steam heat in this day and age?

Steam is used in New York City and has been for a century. Occasionally they have Steam Explosions like the big one in 2007.

(I have seen that before in a movie. It doesn’t end well...)

Just as long as you drive the pickup 🛻 truck full speed into the old mine to dodge the pyroclastic cloud you’ll be OK.

Oh flip the switch on that NASA thingy, too.

Where’s Tommy Lee Jones and Sarah Connor?

Oops, Linda Hamilton

The military used steam heat at Grissom AFB back in the day.

“Yikes!...Washington!”

You can see Mt. Ranier from almost all of the southwestern part of Washington. It’s part of the chain. And St. Helens is only about 120 miles from Olympia. This is why they have volcanic (and tsunami) escape routes in western Washington whether they are useful or not.
