Actually, I don’t want to put words in your mouth. You might not be someone in favor of putting people away for life if their dog kills someone...that is me, not you.
I knew a couple some years back who had a Fila Brasileiro, and that was one damn scary dog. Granted, they both underwent rigorous training with the dog, and the got the dog because their house had been broken into five times, and they had enough. It was never broken into again after they got the dog.
My wife did not like the dog.
When we would visit, the dog would show no outward sign of aggression, but my wife was quite unnerved and uncomfortable the entire time, not only because of the formidable size and appearance of the dog which IIRC, was about 175 lbs, had a giant head and bizarre black and orange striped appearance, almost like a tiger, but because of the way it would just look at her.
It would just sit there and look at her.
Chuckling; fairly tittering!
I’ve read about the Pearly Kings and Queens’ patois.
Oh, to be in England again. Very much enjoyed my two visits.
Poodles are no doubt bright I forgot to agree
I’m partial to Giant Schnauzer too
But they are pretty uncommon
I notice a lot of new European sporting dogs around now
Mostly pointers
And $$$$$
You’re not really disagreeing, just seeing it in a different light from what I read. You still maintain dominant (alpha) position with your dogs, as any owner of medium to large dogs must. Your size in relation to the dog doesn’t really matter all that much; it’s the attitude you take with you into the relationship that sets the tone for the dog.
Sorry, I must’ve responded to the wrong post. What you wrote is essentially correct.
Rottweilers are far more popular, especially since they cracked the top 10 AKC in the ‘80s, than PBT types even though latter is an entire type, not single breed.
Rotts are 2nd-most reported killings but much lower level than PBTs.
Rotts had their chance to be #1 in the killing department. They failed. PBTs - including all the different types, and huge dogs like these “American Bulldogs” and Filas and Canas etc, still dominate the records.
No, not incorrect. I’m pretty well versed in dog history. Also as a German Shepherd fancier I’m pretty aware of all the prejudice that can go on. Again, there are personal anecdotes, and there are large-sample statistics.
You can hate Frenchies all you want, just as I can hate PBTs who still retain the fighting tenacity. That doesn’t make what you state about Frenchies true as a rule. You won’t find many Frenchies on the kill data for dead people due to dog attacks. And I’m not talking infection.
You’re listing registered breeds popularity and Staffordshires closest to an AKC registered pit there is which are way down the list
Few dogs described by the media as pit bull types are registered whatsoever
Rotts are number 7 btw most popular
But it should be noted too give
Frenchies
Labs
Goldens
GSD
Poodles
Account for half of known registered ownerships

Plenty of other links
Now folks who think like you do and blog will create stats saying it’s 6-8%
Anecdotally in Dixie
You know where I live
They are no doubt most popular and cross strata all demographics
Second breed or type dog is no doubt Frenchies or labradoodles
Not sure what the point is, but of course AKC doesn’t give perfect reflection of popularity, but it’s one of the few things you can use well.
Again, PBTs are a sypubtype of the terrier type, not a specific breed. The AKC only recognizes 2 breeds that are PBTs, but there are many, many more indeed. Including those giant brutes the Filas and Canas, etc. don’t be deceived - they all came from PBTs and that was the prime goal.
Despite covering lots of breeds and mutts, PBTs overall still are not as popular as many of these other single breeds.
Though in my liberalland, there are more than enough of them everywhere, as they feel sorry for these oppressed dogs just like all their other aggrieved groups. They seem popular here in central MD, but I won’t extrapolate that to everywhere else in the country.
No matter what, though, PBTs average around 60% of the killings due to attacks. There is no way they are 60% of the dog population.
Having gotten unwanted attention from numerous Canine Americans I have an opinion from the receiving end. All dogs can hurt you when they are serious and not goofing around. It’s not like when your pet bites you. The big breeds are a particular worry because of the amount of damage that they can do. Jaw size, jaw strength. I knew someone who had 100 stitches courtesy of an Akita. Speed is another factor. Dogs are really fast, some way more than others, and when they are headed at you full speed you are in a world of trouble. Worst bite I had was from a not large but very fast Australian shepherd. There are techniques for hand to tooth combat with dogs, but you don’t really want to have to try using it because the dog is usually smarter than you are.
I agree they kill more it’s obvious they are far and away most common breed and I gave data
I never said they were 60%
Around 20% perhaps which I think translates to 18 million dogs that are pit bull type dogs but few of those are registered and accounted for
Now I’m guessing too now but I think registered pitbulls or staffies don’t kill as much
And now this is strictly subjective but having owned both and being very familiar with Rotts having had one continuously 83- now I’d rather be attacked by a pit bull due to size and bite and style of attack
Rotts are simply better people killers and if there were let’s say sake of argument. 20 million Rotts in America the kill numbers of humans would be very high
That said Rotts are not terrier blood so even though more lethal less temperamental so there is that check against Pits
A Rott is also more likely not be 95% of the time a goofy lab acting pet who sleeps on the bed like mine until his protect light comes on then he’s a Wolverine with a lot more weight and fearless generally females as well
Last offering
My son in laws dad trains guard dogs for military and overseas mostly malis but gsd and Dobie
His biggest fear is Dobies who attack humans because of speed and teeth size and like bushmasters and king cobra they attack high up
He was almost killed by one he was correct color training who figured it out quick and retaliated
107 stitches in his bicep later going for his throat
He choked it out and got inside for his pistol
Most folks fear chow chows I think
Never bitten
Which is remarkable since I’ve had guard dogs mostly all my life
Ruby my dear 21 year old chihuahua who died last year would snarl that crazy snarl they do and put her teeth on me and glare at me but not bite
She would lung at Rommel the Rott and latch onto his mane over food
Hanging on his thick coat and marbled epidermal and he would ignore her
He was very good tolerant of her
He sat by us intently staring as she did her 4-5 hour death process in hunters lap
When she breathed her last he got up smelled her and nudged her and went to his chair and curled up morose
Pitiful
His little buddy who mostly always snapped at him lol
The Am Staff presents her beloved Lambchop stuffy over the Dobe pup’s playpen top so he can enjoy it too.
It’s her most precious toy and I never imagined she’d share that.
They mouth wrestle happily and she loves it when he nibbles on her rump
I often wonder if I wind up homeless because of the house fire and the code nazis using up all the rebuild money “for my own good” if begging on street corners with them will be pointless, what with them being deadly killer breeds and all.
In a world where they’re so despised, they’re all I have left and the only things that will always watch over me never dessert me, even if it amounts to just guarding my body if I freeze or starve.
That’s some bitter irony right there
Whomever pings me to these “killer dog “ threads, take me off the list please.
In my “real life” here they’re the only things that have stuck by me.
The few people who said they’d help and “‘always be there for me” disappeared in a disappointingly short amount of time.
It took death to keep Hrafi from sticking by my side but the other two still abide.
Brutal life lesson.
If a friend hadn’t brought me up a pup from AL I’d have tried to find a Plott.
No freaking way there are 20% PBTs, even accounting for all the breeds covered and the mutts. Good God, no. Sorry, that is ridiculous..
You seemed to think they are very popular so that accounts for how many attacks are PBT. 60% are PBT that kills, but even 20% is far too high an estimate for their population. That’s fantasy. Labs would have a big % but even combined with Goldens and other retrievers (again, type), they would not pull 20%. There are so many kinds of dogs and breeds and different mutts. Despite the virtue-signaling people who insist on supporting these PBTs, they just aren’t enough. Meanwhile an overwhelming # of shelter dogs are these. Hhhmmmm.
I am a German Shepherd person. There is probably not a single breed that is more popular worldwide than they since WWI. A whole century of extreme popularity. They get a bad rap, they naturally have some issues…but the stats say indeed they are far behind PBTs (all) and Rotts with mauling and killing.
It’s not the size, it’s the desire to destroy - and the tenacity, which won’t let go. An attack is defined simply as a dog biting someone. GSD would probably be up there for “bites” - partly for their no-nonsense character but also popularity - but not in killings….because generally they just make known their displeasure and move on. Almost all dogs are like that. PBTs, however, are a special kind of mental. They were made for it and retain it today. I will not have them around my people. I would have a Rott, though I wouldn’t own one.
Colorful!
