I don’t think the University of Memphis ever had any connection to the University of Tennessee. It is one of several four-year institutions in the state founded in the 1911-1915 period, along with East Tennessee State University, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State University (an HBCU institution), and Middle Tennessee State University. The only institutions connected with UT-Knoxville are UT-Chattanooga (formerly private) and UT-Martin (started as an ag school).
I think there used to be a branch of the University of Tennessee in Nashville but it was shut down in the interests of integration—they wanted the white students to attend the formerly all-black university.
