"One of my best friends is an atheist."

Sounds like a cheap cliche, but its true. We had great knock-down-drag-out debates, then like all guys, punch each other in the arm, share a few beers, and get on with our friendship. We've since moved far apart, and continued our debates by phone and email.

Once 6 or 7 years ago, I told him that sooner or later, atheism leads to despair, and atheists have a higher than average suicide rate. He really despised such a statement, and our friendship cooled, and never really recovered. I guess I had crossed a line in his mind. He crossed lines in my mind. He started joining pro-abortion protests, and dabbled in very hard core porn, and even contemplated "trying" homosexuality, just for the heck of it.

We just had no common ground left for a "friendship" and old drinking stories from college days can only sustain conversations for so long.

Three years ago, he tried to commit suicide, but failed.

I haven't heard from him for 2 years now. I hope he has not succeeded.

Strange....

I don't believe in God...

And yet I'm vehemently pro-life, don't "dabble" in hard core porn, and have never contemplated homosexuality for the "heck of it" or otherwise.

In fact, I know more homosexual Catholic priests, than homosexual atheists.

Go figure.

That would mean a 100% increase in fighting the devil on Free Republic

Clearly the most important issue facing mankind today. /sarcasm

If there really was a Satan, an evil genius constantly plotting the corruption of human souls, be sure he'd do a far better job of it than what we currently observe. After all, most men can be easily influenced by even passably attractive females.

Life is difficult enough that most people are inclined to place their happiness in a future heaven to deaden the disappointment of this life.

Or they commit suicide in a less obvious manner.

Actually, one of the nuns told us once that PALE GAS WAS MAN'S FUEL TO HELL

P for Pride

A for Avarice

L for Lust

E for Envy

G for Gluttony

A for Anger,and

S for Sloth.

Please know this was not taught as dogma or doctrine and is not set forth for debate just for "thinkin about".It's probably not a bad idea to rid ourselves of as much pale gas as possible before we engage in the battle.I mean gas swells one up so we're a bigger target if we are full of it. Yes,definitely something to really think about.

I was baptized RC and went to catholic school. Through the years, after much study on the subject, I've realized we practice the arts of temple patterned after Babylon. The idolatry, sacraments, Holy days of observance, symbolism, catechism and cannonical law are copies of paganism.

I'd rather not admit what studies(in toto) brought me to understand this but evil is real and does possess humans with or without their knowledge.

I'm no saint but I have seem none amongst humanity who are righteous in my days. Just my opinion.

Excellent article.

Now we're down to 99% on this thread, Marty (see my comments under the original article above). The resident atheists and Christian bashers of FR have already checked in, and you're too busy attacking your own allies to see that. Perfect example, text book example, of my point in posting this. Thank you for illustrating this so well.

Earth to martian...we're both looking down the barrel of a demonic New World Order. Stop shooting at your army buddies and point your weapons at the real enemy.

Is it just me or ....

Congratulations! You are an excellent example of an exceptional atheist (In other words, you are the exception, not the rule.)

I'm most certainly not firing into a mirror. I call 'em like I see 'em.

Do you think I like writing this? Unity is one thing - blind unity is another. If you want to unite under a standard, do it with eyes wide open.

I understand the article and appreciate the author's description. This all has to be done on the personal level as far as I know. Where is the true church of the latter days? It is all who live and practice the word as it has always stood. IMHO.

Don't let me shake your world. I could be wrong and my words are gone after you finish reading this.

A very interesting post.

Yes, it would be much better for all involved if the Christians could lay aside their differences and work toward our shared goals.

In the political realm, we should be willing to join forces with those who acknowledge our common enemy in society. Dr. Laura and Rabbi Lapin have certainly proved that the Orthodox wing of Judaism is on our side. In the international scene, it seems that the Muslims are the first to condemn abortion and the perversion of homosexuality. When it comes to gathering allies in the culture war, we can find them in most anyone whose eyes are firmly fixed on the Creator and not the creation.

Our enemy is evil (you may even want to capitalize that). Equally against us are those who deny the existance of such and liken it to the belief in childhood monsters. Those who would describe what we know as sin as 'lifestyle choices.' Those who liken every call to a spiritual awakening as a rebirth of the Crusades or the Inquisition (if not both)! They are very, very clever in their responses. They know that ridicule works well to incite anger, which serves their cause well.

For they also serve the enemy, some by choice, others by ignorance!

It is best to set the words of such aside for it does not serve us well to consider them.

After all, God is certainly a Republican, right? An American, too, I bet.

I guess Democrats can stop contributing to the church now.

(In other words, you are the exception, not the rule.)

Uninformed speculation based on provincial bias.

No data to support this assertion.

Interesting article --- but it is missing one point- How do we combat Satan and his demons?

By praying! Only by gathering together in groups of two or three and focusing your prayer sessions on specific needs! Through prayer and the Power of the Holy Spirit (through Jesus Christ) may the Devil be defeated!

In all honesty I know a good many Christians whom I'm happy to call friend. I respect their faith, and their practice of it.

OWK, I have generally found your posts to be thoughtful and reasonable. But in this thread I must ask you two questions:

Your Christian friends: would they agree with the Biblical notion that "Our enemies are demons. Fallen angels. Evil spirits."?

And--

As you demonstrate your "respect" for their faith, do you use the word "boogerman"?

Just wondering...

As a student of scriptures for thirty years now, I am persuaded that the greatest weakness of humankind was exactly what Lucifer focused upon in Eve and Adam in the Garden ... "... for you shall be as God ..." When someone presents their self as so knowledgeable that they 'know' faith is a folly, they have already succumb to the most subtle invitation to turn from humble submission to God's Grace. Does humble submission mean their will thereafter be no falling from His Grace? No, but the humble soul will confess the shortcoming and turn to Him, to renew the relationship the human has caused, for God will not abandon His children else His love would have limits ... and it doesn't.
