It's late -- and you know what your mind does to you in the middle of the night. So if I sound over-alarmed, forgive me. Keep this thread bumped.

BUMP BUMP BUMP - JohnHuang2, can you hit "the list" for us? Have we freepmailed these folks yet? Perhaps someone will know where they are, or will have even contacted them...

Jim,

Is there some way you can make sure that the following thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/forum/a3b9e0a1165f1.htm

...is archived/protected from deletion? As you can see in my post, it may contain the last words of a FReeper who was an eyewitness in the second tower.

Also, Jim, is it possible -- without violating anyone's privacy, and without disclosing anything to us -- could you send these three FReepers an e-mail asking them to respond?

If any of these people worked at a WTC company, and frequently posted from work, it is possible they registered their FR accounts using their companies' e-mail addresses. Jim, you might recognize certain company names in their e-mail addresses.

What's the state of telecommunications in NY? Perhaps their communications link was damaged in the bombing. Maybe they just post from work (no home PC?) and they haven't been back since the bombing.

Just throwing out some possibilities other than the unthinkable.......

Another thought - perhaps one or more of these FReepers are assisting in the aftermath and have not had time to post.

He surely would have noted that he was LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW OF THE SECOND TOWER if he was...

That is a good point -- but read his words again (or for the first time if you haven't yet):

"I am in NYC. The tower just collapsed. It is chaos here. People have been seen JUMPING out of the towers to try and save themselves. There is black ash falling all over the city. It is a nightmare that no one has ever dared dream. I am speechless." -- posted by thefactor at 10:07 a.m. Eastern on 9/11/2001

"Words cannot express what is going thru our heads right now after watching that tower fall. That building is something that I, and in fact everyone in this country has known as a symbol for this great land of ours for our entire lives. And it just disintegrated on top of firemen, police, and civilians. Thousands are dead most likely. This is hell. Pray for us as we pray for you." -- posted by thefactor at 10:20 a.m. Eastern on 9/11/2001

Captain, I hope you are right. You have provided me some sanity with your fresh air and common sense.

NY is in chaos. People were evacuated and they may not have access to the Internet. Many communications lines are down so they may have been cutoff from the outside world. I hope and pray that one of these is the reason.

Actually, this really isn't the case:
1. We are not in chaos. We're shook up, but the streets are calm, people are going about their lives, and life is orderly -- very orderly.
2. I know of very, very few people actually evacuated from NYC, except those directly around Ground Zero. Power has come back on there. Manhattanites are still here. Workers are commuting into Manhattan every day.
3. Communications are fine, except for lines in the buildings that are down.

I made several posts to the thread you linked to - just re-read the whole thing. My God, it was like it was happening all over again.

In re-reading, I have to ask after the FReepers who reported family in the buildings in addition to the ones you are requesting info on.

FReeper jacquej reported that his/her brother-in-law and nephew both worked in the building. Any word? jacquej?

FReeper prambo's son and daughter-in-law worked there. Any word?

Praying for all.

Captain,

I just have to say again that your point seems so valid and has calmed me. Thanks for thinking of it. It still would not surprise me, however, if this thing went either way -- it could be a TV watcher, someone in the neighborhood, or possibly a tenant in the tower.

Sometimes the most obvious facts -- like, "I'm in Tower 2" -- just don't always occur to people to make.

Read his posts #112 and #119 VERY CAREFULLY and tell me whether you too think this sounds like an EYEWITNESS in the SECOND TOWER.

No, because if you look at the earlier posts, you'll see remarks about the second tower having been hit too. As addictive as FR is, no one would stay at their computer after an airplane crashed into their building (and I'm pretty sure electricity would have gone out).

Furthermore, he stated only that he lived in NYC; if he had been in the second tower, he surely would have mentioned that. If you personally witnessed Kennedy get shot, would you say, "I was in Dallas at the time," or would you say, "I was right next to the Grassy Knoll!"

I don't know what happened to thefactor, but he wasn't in the towers.

re TheFactor:

Words cannot express what is going through our heads right now after watching that tower fall. That building is something that I, and in fact everyone in this country has known as a symbol for this great land of ours for our entire lives. And it just disintegrated on top of firemen, police, and civilians. Thousands are dead most likely. This is hell. Pray for us as we pray for you. 119 Posted on 09/11/2001 07:20:24 PDT by thefactor

I don't have a time line handy, but he seems to be referring to second attack, at least as per the firemen and cops (first responders) caught on ground level (and in building). I just came from services tonight where 2 Hatzolah (huge Jewish volunteer EMT service) men bentched gomel/publicly thanked G-d for escaping with their lives from that very situation. In other words, unless thefactor was writing from that location, I would pray/presume he is ok. I don't think anyone is missing post that event (some firemen fell through the debris at one point late tue/wed but they were found) -

re the other two:

Attillathehon: posted from “the middle of Manhattan” at 9:51 AM Eastern on Tuesday; nothing since.

if he was in midtown, probably ok, unless G-d forbid he was hurt getting home.

PBRSTREETGANG: a very frequent poster who last posted at 8:41 a.m. Eastern Tuesday, Sept. 11, and NOTHING since. Had posted the day before, then again moments before the initial strike of the North Tower.

do you have the thread he posted in?

keep in mind that local phone service (and cable modems), especially as you get closer to the WTC was/is disrupted. Also, some residential areas near the WTC were completely (and are still) evacuated. Some friends within 1-2 miles are still having trouble getting food/supplies - some public transport still out in proximal neighborhoods. Many people also bailed out - I almost split for NJ, but the bridges were blocked... After yesterdays rain, tonight the wind is whipping up the dust again - I am 100 blocks north and can smell the dust again; we are wearing masks again...Things slowly getting back to normal. All NYers (not just FReepers (gr) need/appreciate your prayers now - we are slowly coming to grips with the fact that almost everyone knows someone (or at least someone who knows someone) who is missing.

Good to know thefactor is doing ok. :-) But here is the info anyways:

The first, American Airlines Flight 11, a Boeing 767 out of Boston for Los Angeles, crashed into the north tower at 8:48 a.m. Eighteen minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175, also headed from Boston to Los Angeles, plowed into the south tower.

In New York, the planes blasted fiery, gaping holes in the upper floors of the Twin Towers. A witness said he saw bodies falling and people jumping out. About an hour later, the southern tower collapsed with a roar and a huge cloud of smoke; the other tower fell about a half-hour after that.

FReepers started reporting the collapse of the second tower at about 10:01am

I'm on an e-mail list that is run through an NYC T1 line. The list just came back on-line today, thanks to a neighbor sharing bandwidth on his still functioning T1 (the list host has not had his connectivity restored yet). There are definitely lines of communication that are still down in the "ground zero" area. I hope those that were near the destruction are OK, and I hope their lack of communication is due to inability to connect...

The state of communications in NY is far better than I would have anticipated in this situation. I can only tell you of my own experiences. I'm on southern LI - about 15 miles away from the WTC. I work for a company out in CA - and have not been able to get through to them since Tuesday. Through e-mails I have learned that the company they use routed their lines through the WTC - and even though they have tried rerouting on several occasions - there has been no success. I also have had a heck of a time getting through to my parents in CT on several occasions. One of the dial-around LD services I use only yields a "circuits are busy" busy signal - the other "this number has been disconnected." There also is no TV other than CBS w/o cable. I also have a friend up in Westchester County who has been without her DSL connection since Tuesday. Hopefully that's the problem with these NY Freepers. Will be checking back in.

I'm going to bed. Thanks for the impressive thread-bumping, concern, sleuthing and sanity.

Leave it to helpful FReepers to help me dig for facts and SO QUICKLY track down thefactor. Let's continue to work on the other two, please.

Jim,

In case you're checking this in the morning, the mystery has been solved. It seems the nightmare I was having was not a "ghost in the rafters" after all, but just a "bluebird in the attic."

Couple of possibilities: 1) They only had internet access at work and the company they work for is in the rubble or is inaccesable. 2) They have a freind or relative missing and are simply in a state of grieving and are not in the mood to post.

No, because if you look at the earlier posts, you'll see remarks about the second tower having been hit too. As addictive as FR is, no one would stay at their computer after an airplane crashed into their building (and I'm pretty sure electricity would have gone out).

The electricity did not go out. I know someone who knows someone that got out of the second building in one piece. He said that the electricity and air condititoning were still working after the building was hit. He was on the 29th floor, so got out okay. But he said they were announcing on the PA system that everything was under control,a nd people should return to their office! He said some people did just that...

This may be a possible explanation for people not posting. I have been a very active freeper for over 3 years. During election night 2000 I could not log on (FR too busy). I was taking a vacation week (at home), yet I was in such fear and misery that I did not log on to my computer again until the following Monday when I was returning to work.

Let's face it: since this has happened there have been an overload of threads. I have spent 8-10 hours a day on FR from Tuesday on. It seems reasonable to me that people who are shellshocked may simply not be up to wading through FR these days.

My son and daughter-in-law work uptown and are OK as of Tuesday PM.

There was a possibility that my Son could have been downtown since he is actively looking for a job.

We did however loose one old acquiantance from NYC; a boy my Son played with in 1979-80. He was above the plane hit line in the first building.

He called his brother to say there was too much fire and smoke and he knew he would not make it out and to tell parents he loved them. Never heard from again.

Just a little Hindu kid that never hurt anyone.

My son was on the phone with a friend downtown who saw the first tower hit, and was on the phone with him when the second one was hit.

My son is now a "mugged liberal" - even talking about enlisting.

Just another possibility. People may be travelling. I myself was scheduled on a flight from Dallas to LA that was cancelled. I ended up having to drive back to LA and being off-line for a couple of days. It could be a similar case here.

Thanks for your concern for your fellow FReepers.
