Barbara Lee's line in the sand
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 09/18/2001 | Debra Saunders

MAYBE if someone had inserted language into last week's House war powers resolution calling the slaughter of more than 5,000 Americans a "hate crime," Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, would have voted for the measure.

Or maybe Lee would have voted yea if the measure had included language against global warming. Lee has written that she sees global warming as a "national security" threat. Or maybe she'd have voted differently if someone had mentioned that Afghanistan's ruling Taliban and Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda organization are anti-gay. Like the Boy Scouts, from which she asked President Clinton to resign as honorary chairman because of the group's anti-gay policies.

But it's hard to admire Falwell's courage when his stupidity is so breathtaking.

It's funny 'cause its true.

It comes down to one simply fact: extreme liberals have not one ounce of patriotism for their own country. They care more about totalitarian nations than democracies. Lee will forever be mentioned in the history books for her selfish vote. Let us hope her district sees the treasonousness of her now infamous line she drew in her own small grains of sand.

So what are you saying, that she is a traitor in every reasonable sense of the word?

Keep in mind, please, that Barbara Lee does not represent the state of California. She represents the People's Republic of Berkeley, a semi-autonomous enclave within California that, along with Cuba and China, is one of the few remaining places on Earth that still keeps the dream of International Communism alive.

Maybe it's her way of protecting the feminized gays in the military. They might break a nail.
We're talking Lee here....It's to be expected from her. Stupid is as stupid does.

There are times when a "finely nuanced response" is not the right response. Ms. Lee needs to realize (though I am afraid she does know it and still acts this way) this is one of those times.

We should all thank Lee for her courageous stand, and hope that she shares her wisdom and courage with her fellow Democrats in the 2002 elections. I especially look forward to her endorsement of the 2004 democrat candidate for president, as I am sure is the Republican National Committee. Let's hope Lee always stays in the Democratic Party.

When I first heard that _one_ person voted against the Prez, I thought it was outrageous.

But when I found out the Lee's constituents include Berkeley, I figured, well, they have a long history of being weirdos, and, in a way, I kind of admire her courage for representing the weirdos in her district.

I would never want to meet her and I'd never support _her_ or _her constituents_ if they ever asked, politically for my support, but I _do_ kind of admire her personal courage for standing up for her constituents.

Every family has one or two weird kids who are always trouble makers but the family puts up with anyway. I don't believe it hurts America much to put up with one Berkeley... Mark W.

FYI, one of the three men who counter-attacked and brought down the hijacked plane in Pennsylvania was gay.

This is a time when Americans should be uniting against our common enemies, not attacking and belittling each other. We have enough problems with people like Barbara Lee, Amos Brown and Tom Amiano; don't be like them.

The doves don't get it: Pacificism begets violence. [...]

Oh man...thank God for this article, and thank you for posting it. I'd been getting a little sick to my stomach over all the "Lee is so courageous" BS coming out of the Bay Area press, so this article is like a breath of fresh air. More than that. It's better than a hundred sarcastic witheringly snide letters to the editor which I could have written, all rolled into one.

Debra Saunders is my new hero.

When then-President Clinton pulled American troops out of Somalia in the wake of an attack that left 18 Americans on a humanitarian mission dead, he let the wrong people know that if they can knock off some American troops, they can chase America out of their country.

Excellent point... I've read interviews with OBL where he points specifically to America's retreat in Somalia as proof we are vulnerable... When I hear people try to compare the risk of putting troops on the ground in Afganistan to what happened in Somalia, I feel like throwing something at the TV... The Special Ops forces on the ground in Afganistan (as we speak, to be sure) will not be there as social workers...

I bet her support would disappear if the four main Bay bridges came tumbling down. Can you imagine the traffic snarl every day, driving 4 hours to do the 80 miles around the bay, that they used to do in 45 minutes? It would take about 6 years to replace them, too. You could virtually guarantee that SF and Oakland would get some conservatives in office then...

well, maybe not...

Barbara Lee is just trying to gain attention and icon status from these sorts of people. There was a "peace rally" at my college yesterday. I couldn't even bear the idiocy and went home.

Of course they had security and if someone had rushed the stage to pound on the speaker, they would have used force to stop him. So I guess peace only goes so far.

BTW, it didn't look like they were going to get much support anyway. But these groups are well-established and well-funded on all campuses.

Debra Saunders neglects to mention, as do most everyone in the press, Lee's ties to the Communist Party USA and her treasonous actions before we invaded Grenada. Details here:

"It comes down to one simply fact: extreme liberals have not one ounce of patriotism for their own country. "

Of course. Liberalism is fueled on self-loathing. There is a concomitant (if paradoxical) conceit, also - liberals view themselves as guilty of everything because they believe they have power over everything. This is reflected in virtually every position liberals take on virtually every issue.

In liberal circles, to which I once belonged, one's level of 'grace' is directly proportional to the dexterity with which malaise can be articulated. You need offer no solutions, nor make any difficult judgements that may diffuse emotional responses. Simply create a type of superficial, purely 'verbal' causality to explain the ills of world, and no matter how wrong it is ultimately proven to be, you are a god.

It is a shame that good American blood will be shed to protect this a$$hole.

Maybe we should use the Soviet Army plan, take the malcontents and place them in the front line with the following message, "Go forward and fight or turn around and be shot".

People like Ms. Lee just don't get it. Any non-Islamic will be destroyed in this battle. There is no "Can't we just get along" from the other side. There is only death to the non believers.

Barbara Lee's long time buddy is Angela Davis. Remember her? Black Panther and now in politics. In addition, Barbara Lee is a member of the Socialist Democrat Party.

She supported communism in the Caribbean. Rush talked about her today. I wonder what the Oaklands would do if they were bombed. Would they want to go it alone? Maybe that region should be forcably seceded from the US.

I would agree with you if it were not for the fact that Communism Kills.

Neville Chamberlain was responsible for the deaths of thousands of British soldiers.

It was only the heroism of the British Merchant Marine that saved so many from being crushed in the aftermath of the Blitzkrieg.

Department of Peace?

I can't think of a better way to guarantee that many more thousands of American civilians die.
