Taliban point scud missiles at city

The Taliban has pointed scud missiles at the Pakistani city of Peshawar.

Jet fighters are patrolling the skies over the country as tensions rise in the region.

Local tribesmen in the area are urging people to raise arms in support of the Taliban.

They have dug trenches and deployed anti-aircraft missiles, surface-to-surface missiles and rocket launchers, according to local sources.

The tribal areas of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province run for over 250 miles (400 km) along the border with Afghanistan.

Although part of Pakistan, the area has never been brought under government control and Pakistani law does not apply there.

Many locals are involved in smuggling and drug running. All of them own weapons, from the ubiquitous Kalashnikov AK-47 to heavy artillery pieces. Some even have tanks that were brought across the border during the Soviet war in Afghanistan.

Peshawar, the regional capital, is just 36 miles from the Afghan border. The vast majority of the city's residents are Pathans, the same ethnic group as the Taliban. Over two million Afghans live in and around Peshawar.

They've got 3 or 4 launchers, and their operational ability is highly questionable. Lord knows what state these scuds are in.

Does this mean that the Taliban are planning to bomb themselves?

Yesterday, you stated they had no Scuds, today you are attempting to downplay the numbers. Do you have a source for your info ?

As I stated yesterday, It is foolish to underestimate your adversaries.

Moscow's Segodnya paper reported on 19 August 1998 that the Taleban had obtained four Scud transporter-erector-launchers

http://www.cdiss.org/98aug2.htm

thats what i learned last night, and on Sky News a military expert downplayed the issue of Scuds, saying that their operational status was "highly questionable".

It's true, earlier yesterday i had no idea they possessed Scud missiles, I'm sure a lot of people thought that too, so I did a little research and found that they did in fact stumble across a couple of ex-soviet launchers a few years ago.

As many of you know, I help with the FreeRepublic fundraisers. It is not always easy or fun sitting at a computer for hours and hours monitoring those threads. Everyone who work the threads VOLUNTEERS to do so. We spend days and weeks helping to keep FreeRepublic running.

Ask yourself these questions:

Where is the first place I go to get my news?
Am I getting any benefit from FreeRepublic?
Am I learning from FreeRepublic?

FreeRepublic is not free. It costs Jim Robinson tens of thousands of dollars to keep this forum running. There are over 60,000 registered users on FreeRepublic and only 1,000 help keep this forum running. Those who do not have the ability to donate money could help by bumping the threads once in a while. Those who who do should be ashamed of yourselves. You are a FReeploader.

Go ahead, flame me. I don't care. I contribute to FreeRepublic, and I for one do not want to see this forum dead.

If everyone who registered donated one measly dollar a month, we would never have to have a fundraiser again.

How can anyone know that is all they have ?

I tend to agree the Scuds are over rated as a weapon, serving as a terror weapon. But lets not forget that over 100 Americans were killed by Scuds it the Gulf War.

This is actually kind of funny. Peshawar is overrun with the religious schools that gave birth to the Taliban, is three-quarters Afgan refugees and the city that scares the hell out of the Pakistan military since they don't really control it.
