I will reserve judgement until I read some nominees.......This vanity is for those who responded to the previous one about the ugly, ugly, ugly Cathedral almost completed in LA.

The U. S. Capitol! And the White House is #2.
To: watsonfellow
The National Cathedral in DC is nice.
To: watsonfellow
That's easy.

The Chrysler Building, New York.
To: watsonfellow
I hate to sound parochial but, Trinity Church in Boston is almost unbelievably beautiful, if little known. It is extremely ornate and meticulously maintained. Nothing I've seen in the U.S. or abroad compares.
The Library of Congress is a contender. Grand Central Station in New York is impressive.
To: watsonfellow
Me, I'm partial to the Flatiron Building.
To: watsonfellow
A tie. Our late lamented World Trade Center Tower One and Tower Two.
To: watsonfellow
I'll agree with reply #4 - Washington National Cathedral
To: denydenydeny
Where is the Flatiron Building located? San Francisco?

Statue of Liberty is my vote ... and by definition it is a building.

Twelve Oaks . . . before Sherman burned it to the ground, y'all. Oh wait! That was just a movie! Never mind. O.K., I vote for St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Independance Hall, Mount Vernon, and Monticello. Three way tie for number one, as true aesthetics include history and symbolism as well as form. Monticello would have been a runaway #1, were it not for all the unrecognizable busts...

(aw hell, I would like to live there if it were just in Chicago)

It's gotta be the Empire State Building. Though a wee bit shorter than the WTC, I always thought it, and the Chrysler Building were the crown jewels of the Manhattan skyline. The interiors are also beautiful with all the marble and art deco design. JIM
To: Non-Sequitur
As a Catholic and dilletante medieval historian, and lover of gothic architecture it is quite beautiful; however, it is far too "European," to be considered an "American" building.

The chapel at the Air Force Academy.

I don't know if I like that one or not. I have seen a model built of it in one building at the University of Oklahoma campus. It's different!
I think the most beautiful building on earth is the San Diego, California temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I think I'd think that even if I weren't Mormon. I'm trying to put in a picture here--if I mess up, would someone who is more competent with HTML put it up for me? http://www.mind.net/dlmark/tsandiego.htm
To: Jorge
Monticello has the beauty of Thomas Jefferson's genius still visible as you walk the grounds. I'd also recommend a trip to the University of Virginia.

The Capitol is in a league of its own, but in DC there are two that run a respectable 2nd.
The Old Post Office on Pa. Ave., and,
The National Building Museum at about 4th and F St. NW.
To: one_particular_harbour
well De gustibus non es disputandum But it is ugly and horrid.
To: Hegewisch Dupa
I like the way the stainless steel exterior reflects colors at night... and during the Freedom festival/VP Fair fireworks.

World Trade Center. I want it back. Right now.
I am also partial to IM Pei's Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong.
Both buildings photograph extremely well.

My wife and I just got home from Europe, having had our stay involuntarily extended by 3 or 4 days. Right now, my vote for the most beautiful building in the world goes to my home.

What is this? Are you trying to find Bin Laden's next target?? Wrong time line for this thread to exist.
To: JoeSixPack1
Are you joking, are you that paranoid to think that Bin Laden is here observing what a few freepers consider to be the most beautiful buildings in America.....come on now, I realize the enormity of what happened, but lets not have it totally take over our lives......

The Jefferson Building at the Library of Congress may well be the most beautiful building in America.
(Many very highly placed Washingtonians think it is just that: "The most beautiful building in America".)
It is the OLD bulding accross the Street from the Senate and immediately South of the US Supreme Court on Capitol Hill.
