TOKYO (Reuters) - The United States has warned its allies of a possible second round of attacks by the end of this week following the deadly recent strikes against New York and Washington, Jiji news agency quoted Japanese government sources as saying.
The next round of attacks, if really launched, would be on an even greater scale than those on September 11, which killed more than 6,000 people, according to information provided to Japan by the United States, Jiji said.
The news agency quoted the sources as saying on Saturday that the "means of terrorism" would be "more cruel and shocking" than in the September 11 carnage, when hijackers flew airliners into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington.
The targets of the possible attacks were unknown but possibilities included members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Pakistan, Jiji said.
The government sources said attacks on Japan could not be ruled out since Tokyo has expressed support for U.S. retaliation against the September 11 strikes.
The United States has judged that a second round of attacks, if carried out, is likely by the end of this week at the latest, the sources said.
Japan's public security authorities have gone on heightened alert since receiving the information from the United States.
Washington suspects that a group led by fugitive Saudi-born millionaire Osama bin Laden has been contemplating attacks using biological and chemical weapons, such as sarin nerve gas, for years, according to the sources.
The United States has information that the group has already acquired small airplanes to spray bacteria causing smallpox or anthrax from the air, Jiji quoted the sources as saying.
Time magazine reported on Saturday that investigators had found a crop-dusting manual during a search for those responsible for the attacks on New York and Washington, triggering concern that crop-dusting planes might be used for chemical or biological assaults.
The FBI in Washington said it had not seen the report and had no comment on it.
Smallpox????? That is supposed to be gone. I know that it may have been stolen from the Russians, and that Clinton refused to allow our reserves to be destroyed(the ONLY thing he did right in my opinion). But, how much would they have?
I was vaccinated when I was a baby, but my son wasn't. Are they intending to wipe out the young?
How comforting. . .
Whoops, I know I'm speaking to the choir.
She and her colleagues are talking about it a lot, and pressure on Uncle Sugar to do something about it is going up fast. With any luck, you and your son, and all the rest of us will be able to get vaccinated again in the not too distant future. Question is: Will it be too distant?
And I might add that it wouldn't hurt for everyone to contact your favorite congresscritter and demand that Uncle Sam get the ball rolling on this (production of a sufficient number of doses of smallpox vaccine to innoculate the entire country -- not just the armed forces). We know what kind of mad dog we're dealing with, and time is running out . . . IMHO.
There are only two places in the world that had variola virus (smallpox) at the time the UN/WHO made the world safe for biological terrorism: the US and Russia. If they didn't get it from us, that leaves one possibility.
The vaccine was only good for 10 years or so. No one is immune.
Thank the UN.
I agree. Just like we all admire the overwhelming courage it took for the passengers on the plane that was downed in Pennsylvania, to rush the terrorists after having probably witnessed passengers being assaulted , not knowing if a backpack on a terrorist had a bomb as told, whatever, all of us need to become alert and watchful. I sort of wished the President had called all of us to arms.....had reminded us that every corner of our country is vulnerable to terrorist sickness and that if we were ALL vigilant, the terrorists would have a tougher time.
Helicopters can be outfitted for cropdusting too. A small one can maneuver more effectively then a small plane and stay in one area more, like inside a stadium, and take off from about any where.
And what about those backpack units, like the guy who flew into the statue of liberty.
Let's just say this--heads up routinely, folks. Anything looks likely able to cause mayhem, check it out and deal with it accordingly.
FREEPERS are good at showing they put their umph where their mouths are over and over again. Sounds like our nation needs our eyes, ears and alert actions as never before.
And, again, it's probably wise to already have at least a nodding acquaintance with some trusted enforcement officials who would have the authority and presence of mind to take action. No use calling up any official in any agency only to have it buried out of ignorance, too many calls or not knowing you nor trusting your observations. . . .though calling and taking that risk would probably be wiser than not calling.
And be wise as serpents and overtly harmless as doves. No need risking a FREEPER'S LIFE because you said the wrong thing in the wrong way at the wrong time in the wrong situation.
In some situations, it might be wise to say something neutral or agreeable sounding just to protect yourself until you can leave the scene, WRITE YOUR OBSERVATIONS UP and get them to someone trusted.
When you fininsh your observation--taking notes as fitting or recording in a walkman or a cell phone's memory--ISOLATE YOURSELF AND WRITE UP YOUR OBSERVATIONS AS QUICKLY AND ACCURATELY AS POSSIBLE. DATE AND TIME THEM.
WRITE BEHAVIORALLY--PERSON "A" IN XYZ CLOTHING WITH X IN THEIR HANDS RAN FROM __________ TO A LATE MODEL DARK BLUE CAR WITH LICENSE NUMBER__________ AND RACED OFF DOWN ___________ ROAD AT AN ABOVE AVERAGE SPEED GOING SOUTH ON THE NORTH/SOUTH STREET.
That is, describe actions first and foremost and completely. Only then can you go back and describe your feelings about what you were observing. Your feelings can be valuable input but the actions of the observed are far more important.
Your feelings probably come from or are connected to your intuition. Your intuition probably tunes in on many very subtle cues unconsciously and holistically rather than linear-logically. That can be very valuable--particularly if your intuition is often right.
If you think the issue is urgent, then turn the report in, fax it ASAP to your enforcement contact. If not, you might have fitting people who have good perspective on such things to review it with you first.
If you have a small camera, keep it with you. You might put in at least 400 ASA film if there's a likelihood of even significant darker scenes in your normal daily activities. If you always work etc. in bright daylight, a slower film would be good for the increased resolution.
If it's urgent, you can turn the film over. . . . but make some judgements here. If you turn the film over, you may never be compensated. . . . lose all control over it and the images etc. Remember Kennedy's death and the movie. . . . though he did get a pretty price for it eventually. If reasonably practical and not so urgent, you might consider taking it to a trusted quality photoshop and wait for it to be developed. Then get triplicates. Ask a trusted friend to file one in a safety deposit or other very secure location unknown to you. Tell 2-3 trusted unconneced, unrelated people who that person was with the photos.
If you have a digital camera, make several backup files on CD-ROM MEDIA even if you have to go to a friends to use their CD burner. Stash a copy safely yourself and 2-3 with trusted people. Probably officials would like the original digital file but copies are really about as good. On film photos, they will insist on the original negatives. You can still put a (C) notice on the edge or corner of the best shots with a very small drafting ink pen with drafting black ink available at all office supplies. (C) 2001 and your name or identifier would do.
For FREEPERS who are normally housebound but with ample window space to watch goings on in popular public places, you might keep a journal of the daily routines. If something radically or significantly out of ordinary occurs, you'll have a record and know better when to call the officials and how fast.
If middle eastern looking men seemed to be manically driving a vehicle into a key building or large group of people, an urgent call might be in order. Having a phone with a panic button to the trusted official might be in order. If such people put parcels down in a crowded market place and seemingly make haste to leave, urgent action might also be in order. But a record of the routine days for the area can give you a baseline to make those judgments better against.
Perhaps others hereon can critique the above and add their own ideas/suggestions.
Those are enough, hon. More cruel and shocking. Let's stop these b*stards!
Just stepped outside for the paper and heard the familiar whine of a crop-duster straining over row crops. If Time's report is accurate, I'd sure like to see it mentioned by more news outlets.
The terrorists would have given us their BEST and STRONGEST attack first, when it would have the most impact. Thats just what they did. Not now when the chances of pulling it off are greatly diminished.
Having said that, these scenarios are plausible. Do you want advanced warning on when it will happen? Watch the stock of 7-11. When there is massive short selling, that means the terrorist organizations know that shortly there will be no one left to run the register.
What do you envision?
I know what you are talking about. And it wouldn't be pretty. But I don't know that the people responsible would be affected.
Too bad action couldn't be made before this point. It's not going to do the people about to be killed much good.
Have you ever seen the border? Miles and miles of unfenced areas and where there are fences there are holes cut in them. They have increased checks on the bridges but there's no INS agents standing out there in the desert or everywhere along the Rio Grande. Apparently the two Arabs caught here last week were caught by Mexican officials when they noticed they were trying to use the illegal Mexicans' route into the US instead of through customs where agents can check them.
If that is what the drug companies think, then they are the stupidest, most inept businessmen and women on the planet. I would give 1/2 a year's salary to get my child vaccinated, just now...
