U.S. warns of another possible attack this week
Posted on 09/22/2001 11:51:29 PM PDT by knak
TOKYO (Reuters) - The United States has warned its allies of a possible second round of attacks by the end of this week following the deadly recent strikes against New York and Washington, Jiji news agency quoted Japanese government sources as saying.
The next round of attacks, if really launched, would be on an even greater scale than those on September 11, which killed more than 6,000 people, according to information provided to Japan by the United States, Jiji said.
The news agency quoted the sources as saying on Saturday that the "means of terrorism" would be "more cruel and shocking" than in the September 11 carnage, when hijackers flew airliners into New York's World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington.
The targets of the possible attacks were unknown but possibilities included members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Pakistan, Jiji said.
The government sources said attacks on Japan could not be ruled out since Tokyo has expressed support for U.S. retaliation against the September 11 strikes.
The United States has judged that a second round of attacks, if carried out, is likely by the end of this week at the latest, the sources said.
Japan's public security authorities have gone on heightened alert since receiving the information from the United States.
Washington suspects that a group led by fugitive Saudi-born millionaire Osama bin Laden has been contemplating attacks using biological and chemical weapons, such as sarin nerve gas, for years, according to the sources.
The United States has information that the group has already acquired small airplanes to spray bacteria causing smallpox or anthrax from the air, Jiji quoted the sources as saying.
Time magazine reported on Saturday that investigators had found a crop-dusting manual during a search for those responsible for the attacks on New York and Washington, triggering concern that crop-dusting planes might be used for chemical or biological assaults.
The FBI in Washington said it had not seen the report and had no comment on it.

The official party line is that your smallpox vacination is effective for about ten years.

I'm usually not in favor of torture but in this case
That's the nice thing about having them caught in Mexico. There probably more chance they will have been made to talk. They have methods over there that can get a confession out of anyone, I really wouldn't like to be the Arab male who is picked up by the Mexican police when they apply the high voltage cattle prods.

I say if they do, nuke the hell out Saudi Arabia first. Then make sure to publicize the home address of binladen's brother in Boston. Then I have even more good ideas, but I'll refrain from posting them at this time.

"Only 40 million? Is'nt there 230 million of us? I wonder WHO is going to get the vaccination. Just gunna save the big boys? "
I don't know why the number is so low. I am not a medical guy. It could be that it takes time to gear up vaccine production and the manufacturing capability is maxed out at 40 million doses. It could be budget limited. It could be a lot of things. I'm just reporting what I have read.

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."
There is no possible way that we can figure out every eventuality in this situation. We can pray for God to give our leaders wisdom, and for Him to protect us and to expose the plans of our enemies before they can implement them, and it seems He's doing that. Just the fact that they are admitting that the crop-dusting thing is a real possibility is evidence to me that He is helping the authorities uncover their plots, or at least opening their eyes to see what used to be unthinkable. I think the President needs to call ANOTHER day of prayer, and maybe suggest that IF we know of any wrongdoing in our own lives, we turn from that also. I think God will bless that, too.

Just the panic from a small plane flying over a stadium full of people would kill hundreds or even thousands in the rush to get out. I wonder what the chances of someone with a 9mm or .45 actually hitting a small plane would be. Doubtfull at best I imagine.

define "holistically" for me
Extremely doubtful. The US Army used to teach that a squad of soldiers concentrating rifle fire at a point in front of the airplane had a chance of bringing down an aircraft but admitted that it was unlikely to be effective. Of course, propeller driven aircraft move relatively slowly so you would get more shots in. I live about 35 miles west of Dulles International airport and I have been watching the skies carefully for the past week. I have seen only commercial jets, military fighters, and military helicopters. I have several friends who are private pilots and they tell me that they have no intention of flying until people feel more secure because they don't want anyone taking potshots at them from the ground.

Short of going nuclear, chemical or biological, I can't imagine what could be more cruel or shocking.
Taking that route would mean they believe we won't follow our own stated policy in regard to WMD.
define "holistically" for me
In the sense Quix was using, it means your mind would be considering the overall situation, noting what's normal, what's unusual, extrapolating and interpolating, and generally being the organic supercomputer that it really is, all independently of anything you might consciously be doing.
The smallpox vaccine does not have smallpox in it. If you took a trip to England or Europe and found yourself some cows with a disease called cowpox, you could give it to yourself. You would make antibodies which are cross-protective for smallpox. Cowpox is very mild and usually goes away without treatment. It's almost a shame we don't have it here in the US, now, though it is not good for the dairy industry.
The previous mortality rates for smallpox were only 30%. After all this, I sincerely doubt that this will be the agent for use if there is one, in a future terrorist attack. Having worked in the manufacture of recombinant vaccines and monoclonal antibodies, I sincerely doubt that the mid east has managed to alter the smallpox virus.
It is difficult for me to predict what I think would be the most effective and safe bio-weapon of choice. Anthrax would pretty much render the property useless for many long years. Ebola is too self-limiting to kill many and too dangerous to handle and deal with. Bubonic plague is almost safe for us to encounter now - the reasons for it being so deadly in the past had more to do with the ways people lived in that time, and the bacteria itself is very hard to keep alive outside of an incubator.
We have strains of Yersinia in hospitals for QC purposes and we lose them under the best of conditions at times.
I guess I have to think they would use some form of chemical poisoning. Inert bio-weapons will not die enroute to the placement of them and are much more predictable.
God Bless America.

Re: WMD use of smallpox...
1) Vaccination protection lasts, at best, 25 years. As the last vaccinations were given in IIRC the mid- to late-70's, no one is currently protected. (Except CDC researchers who work with the virus.)
2) There are two forms of the variola (smallpox) virus. One is mild, causing scarring but seldom death. The other is the hideous plague that has killed uncounted thousands throughout history. I believe only the killer form is covered by the standard vaccination.
3) Either form could be "weaponized" using genetic engineering. It would depend on the results desired. As weaponization could affect any number of factors, standard vaccine probably would not be very effective.
4) Variola has multiple infection vectors, and remains viable long after many (most?) viruses have been destroyed by environmental exposure. (Ebola, otoh, requires blood or mucus membrane contact, is rather fragile, and so is unlikely to be used as a weapon.)

If they release a bio attack, there will be a total breakdown of control as the vipers are squished.
I'd tend to agree. Any nuke or bio, and all bets are off.
I think it would be time to ask the Russians how they'd feel about half ownership in all the oil in the MidEast...
Time will tell.
I sadly beg to differ. I do NOT believe the terrorists gave us their worst first.
I believe they triggered and will be triggering various intensities, mostly dreadfully awful of different types and they and Russia and China will analyze our responses very carefully to better calibrate Russia invading on the east coast and China on the west coast in the coming WWIII--then the terrorists will soften us up with nukes along with a few "accidental" ones from a Russkie sub off the east coast.
At least that's the very convincing sort of scenario 100's of people have dreamed and had unsought visions of over the last several years.
And THEY are being manipulated to do that in order to insure that the clammer for peace at any price global gov is intensely emphatic for an extended time--as well as insuring 1/3-2/3 less people in the world--all the easier to manage.

Keep up with posting warnings and Osama bin Laden will not have to do anything else because we will be doing it for him. I guess it is a catch 22.
Those items were quick, off the top of my head.
However, in that sentence, regarding intuition, it appears that most women and others with highly intuitive ways of taking in and evaluating information tend to do it holistically instead of linearly. i.e. at an unconscious level, their whole range of senses scans the environement and registers data very unconsciously in an evidently--multidimensional, whole sort of way--like a hologram or some such--holistically.. . . . entire at once in some respects. . . . not so much step by step 1, 2, 3, or a, b, c.

Saudi Arabia? Ahhh... you mean the country where we have several thousand troops stationed. The country that has been our ally in the area for at least the past decade.
Interesting target, Osinki. How about we nuke Boston, after that? I understand bin Laden has a relative there, too.
I think you are absolutely right. And it wouldn't surprise me to learn that this type of heightened awareness tack, is and will continue to be, used as a means to keep the faithful engaged and in full support of any measures believed needed to aid our cause.
Many good practical sugestions in your post. Thank you.

From the Roman Catholic mystical fringe comes the call and cry to pray for the safety of Atlanta. I have decided to heed the call and pray as hard as I can for the preservation of Atlanta and all the innocents of the world.
Time was when I would have considered such things as imaginations run amok. How things change.

STRONGLY CONCUR. Heart-felt earnest prayer of a right-living person who's also trusting in Christ's Blood to cover the errors he still makes, will do more good at exposing AND routing AND destroying evil than all the armies in the world put together.
And sometimes a child's prayer is the most powerful. No beating that child-like faith.

A couple of years? we'll all be dead! Only 40 million? Is'nt there 230 million of us?
Containment. If they drop the virus on a city you vaccinate the city and surroundings. That isn't 230 million. Its highly unlikely that everyone everywhere could be hit at the same time.

Well I guess that the attacks failed to materialize this weekend but IMHO they will come. Trying to think like a terrorist leads me to conclude that they are waiting for a slight relaxation of security. Such relaxations inevitably happen most especially when after the initial stikes nothing seems to be going on for a few days or even weeks.
As a precedent from miltary history the start of WWII was caharacterized by a brief period of intense fighting in subjugating Poland then by a "phony war" which ended in a real sense with the invasion of Norway. Still the British, French, Belgians, and Netherlanders were unprepared for the Western Blitzkrieg. The Schlieffen plan was know from the days of the Franco Prissian war and it was still executed by the Wermacht. Hopefully we will be prepared and ready when and where the terrorists launch their next strike. I for one am thinking maybe the Coast Guard should be very much augmented.

This shouldn't shock anyone. Of course they want to follow up their attacks. That way they can keep the level of terror up.

While you might be right from a tactical point of view, I think you are wrong from a strategic point of view. Why not make an even worse attack after you foe steps up his defenses just to invoke more terror; "See your government has done all this and still can't protect you."?
