Thou Shalt Not Covet
GMU ^ | April 25, 1995 | Walter E. Williams

Posted on 09/24/2001 10:52:37 AM PDT by SAMWolf

As a Sunday school kid, I never quite understood the significance of the commandment, "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maid servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's." It was easy to understand why you shouldn't covet your neighbor's wife. After all that could lead to adultery but what's wrong about being jealous about your neighbor's other possessions? Liberals have helped me see the light: jealousy is a precursor to evil. It causes otherwise decent people to fall easy prey to scummy charlatans.

Look at the debate surrounding the Republican proposed tax cuts. Liberals protest it isn't fair to cut taxes of those earning over $200,000. Liberals make the incredibly thoughtless argument that since the wealthy have benefitted the most from society they also owe the most. Higher taxes are a way to make them "give something back." Liberals' agenda is to make us jealous and make us think that one person has more because another has less so they can succeed in their redistributionist agenda.

But how do people earn money in a free society? Let's take the extreme example of billionaire Bill Gates, founder of Micro-Soft. There is no evidence that Gates enslaved or robbed anyone. There's a lot of evidence that millions of common people like you and me voluntarily gave him money for software programs that make life easier and more pleasurable like Windows, DOS and other products. Gates served us well and he's rich because millions upon millions of independent decision makers agreed his products were superior to the next best alternative.

Liberals make the nonsense argument that people like Gates owe society something. If anything society benefitted far more from Gate's activities than Gates himself. That's nearly always the case. People who invented products like MRI's, miracle drugs, and laser machines or services like overnight mail, e-mail, and hotels benefitted society much more than anything they themselves might have received. Just ask yourself: who received the greatest benefit from the antibiotic that may have saved your loved one's life - the inventor who got profits from sale of the medicine to you or was it you and your loved one?

How appropriate is it to hold people, who serve us so well, up to scorn, abuse and ridicule? We might also ask: how appropriate is it for us to make social mascots out of society's leeches, vermin and parasites? How much sense does it make to confiscate the wealth of those who serve us and reward those who seek to live off and prey on others?

Liberals are about the control. Jealousy is their powerful instrument for the politics of envy. By getting us to covet that which belongs to our neighbor, we in turn give them the power to confiscate what are perceived as illgotten gains of others and pass it around. In the process we all wind up being less free, less prosperous, less moral and become a nation of thieves engaged in the futile attempt to live at each other's expense.

You'd think at least the church would be in the forefront in preaching against envy. But one of the greatest successes of liberals is their co-optation of America's church leaders into their evil agenda. Today's church leaders, along with members of Congress, have forgotten God's commandment against coveting and probably interpret the commandment "Thou shalt not steal" as God really meaning "Thou shalt not steal, unless there's a majority vote."

I posted this old editorial because I feel that what Professor Williams is saying also applies to those that enjoy living in our free society but hate those that stand up and defend it.

All these professors, actors, media types and students who are running around saying the U.S. got what it deserved 9/11/2001 are the parasites of our Society.

They live off the sacrifices of others while loudly condemning and spitting on those who made the sacrifices.

"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's."

How 'bout coveting thy neighbor's maidservant's ass? Is that okay?

I know who he'd be looking to save.

Yep. He'd be looking to save the lost. He came to "save his people from their sins." Because of his unique perspective as Deity, he knew that "whoever sins is a slave to sin." This would include every living person.

The good news is, He is still "looking to save" people. If you have not yet realised that your sins could not be forgiven without His suffering and death on the cross, He is still "looking to save" you.

Today, the greatest contributor to the black community (in general) being at the lower end of the socio-economic scale is the anti-achievement mentality that is so prevalent within the community. When a black kid gets an A he is ridiculed as "being white." How often are sucessful blacks that don't tow the liberal line refered to as "Sell outs," "Uncle Tom," and "not really 'black.'"

Explain to me how a person can arrive from Asia pennyless and not being able to speak a word of english and make a success out of himself in a short period of time? How does the Asian community perform so well and have such success in school and business? Especially when many were not born here. Yet blacks, who are born here fail to achieve. The "asian culture" in the US is one of achievment and success. Failure is not acceptable within the community. It is a cultural problem within the black community. Not a racial problem.

The "third world" is not poor and hungry because of America's success. They are poor and hungry because of 1 thing... LACK OF FREEDOM!

You seem to be implying that everone has the same chance to reach the exalted heights of Bill Gates or any other achiever.

No, what Williams said was that Gates has given more to society than he has received.

Obviously you thought that your own argument would be easier to refute than his, and you were right.

The only way that this could be achieved is to begin with an 'even playing field', unfortunatly the world is not an even playing field, its a myth propogated by right wing economists and politicians to justify less involvement in welfare of their citizens.

Please show us writings from "right wing economists and politicians" that claim the world is an even playing field. No hurry, we'll wait.

These people claim that if people are given the initative to do as they will then most will come up trumps and be able to pay for education, health, and whatever else.

No, mostly they claim it's better for people to support themselves than to be dependent on handouts, and that people work harder when they get to keep what they earn.

If the level playing field was real, as these people would have you believe, why are Blacks and Hispanics continually in a lower socio-economic position that whites?

Like most leftists, you confuse equality of opportunity with equality of results.

If the 'even playing field' did exist then why does the third world exist? Are you saying the rest shold just be left to die on the streets?

Charming. It isn't enough to twist Williams' arguments beyond recognition; now you also claim he wants poor people to starve. Have you ever noticed that your smug posture of moral superiority is based primarily on lying to yourself about what other people believe?

As for bringing Christianity into it, get off you moral high horse.

Clearly you're oblivious to the irony here. Williams (who, incidentally is black) isn't the one whose self-rightousness drips off the screen with every word. George Will wrote an excellent column some years ago about "virtucrats" -- people whose primary basis of political understanding is self-congratulation. Sound familiar?

Don't try to use the bible to vindicate your own privillaged position!

How arrogant you are. Knowing nothing of the writer's background or faith, you feel free to sneer at what you imagine he must be like.

Or are you just some trendy new revisionist Christian? If Jesus walked into this world and saw the disparity between the first and the third worlds I know who he'd be looking to save.

No limit on that arrogance, is there? Go read what Jesus said to the Centurion -- a well-paid military man from an occupying army.

I doubt you'll stick around here long enough to learn anything, but before you go, ask yourself this:

If I believe in tolerance and diversity, why am I so contemptuous of views that differ from my own? And if I think it's wrong to impose moral views on others, why am I doing exactly the same thing?

Actually, what is propogated is that an "even playing field" can be created. And that is propogated by the LEFT. Life is not fair, the world is not fair, and it never will be. Your buddy Tom Daschle likes to claim that successful people "have won's life lottery." There is no "lottery" that determines your life's course. What determines it is what you put into it to achieve the outcome you desire.

Though an "even playing field" will never exist anywhere, America is about as close to it as will ever be achieved.

Your post reminds me of a conversation I recently had with a friend. He is a white male and is a pilot who is hoping to eventually fly for the major air lines. He was upset because he read an article about a program that pays for pilot lessons for blacks because there aren't many black pilots. My friend told me how he started working when he was 13 years old and put all the money into savings to pay for his flying school. When he was older, he worked for free at first at a air field and worked his way up. He spent YEARS "paying his dues" to pursue his life-long dream to be a pilot. Now tell me, why couldn't anyone, regardless of color, do the same?

A level playing field is not possible, each person has his or her own degree of brains and ambition. To punish them out of hand for their natural talents is obscene and anti-human.

Not everyone is a Bill Gates, but to punish with punitive taxes that gives government control of money rather than Bill Gates is vampirish. We benifit from the ambition of men like Gates via their need to keep busy, improve, expand, invent to their maximum potential. This creates jobs and cuts welfare rolls, it's called capitalism.

Moral equivalency and the "even playing field" of socialist marxist doctrine will not get you to the heights you desire.

But perhaps if you back away slowly from your computer, get off your sorry ass and go to work, you too may one day share in the capitalist dream called America.

While it would be wrong to want your neighbor's stuff, I don't see anything wrong with wanting to have the same stuff of your own, ie it would be wrong to want to take your neighbor's house, but what would be wrong with wanting to build yourself one just like it?
