Chelsea Talks to Tina: Former First Daughter To Write on Trade Center Attack
The New York Observer ^ | September 26, 2001 | Gabriel Snyder

Posted on 09/26/2001 5:20:53 PM PDT by aculeus

Tina Brown finally got a Clinton on her payroll.

Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, 21, has agreed to write a story for Talk Magazine about her experiences during the World Trade Center attack, a source at the magazine said.

"Chelsea Clinton is pursuing a piece for us related to the World Trade Center disaster," the Talk source said.

The story is expected to run in the November issue of the magazine, though the publication date has not been finalized. Ms. Clinton’s piece is assigned at roughly 1200 words.

A spokesperson for Talk did not immediately return a phone call.

It appears that Talk approached Ms. Clinton, a Stanford graduate who is set to enter Oxford University in England later this fall to study international relations.

Though Ms. Clinton has typically kept a distance from the media, she was so troubled by the World Trade Center tragedy – and by the fact that friends of hers lost loved ones – she decided to go public with her thoughts, a friend of the former First Daughter said.

"She was so moved by the events," the friend said. The friend added that Ms. Clinton didn’t intend to give any more interviews related the tragedy.

Chelsea Clinton was in New York City September 11, the day of the attack. In an interview with NBC’s Jane Pauley, Ms. Clinton’s mother, New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, said her daughter had planned to go jogging that morning around the World Trade Center plaza, but opted to go to a coffee shop instead.

"She was going to go around the towers," Senator Clinton said. "She went to get a cup of coffee and that's when the plane hit."

Senator Clinton said she wasn’t able to reach Chelsea for two hours after the attack, and was afraid to tell her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who was traveling at the time.

"Bill was in Australia and he was so upset by what he was seeing on television that I didn’t want to tell him that I couldn’t find her until I found her," Senator Clinton said. "I told him, everything’s fine, don’t worry."

Chelsea Clinton has subsequently visited Ground Zero, the site of the demolished World Trade Center, and talked to rescue personnel on the scene.

Reached by The Observer, a spokesperson for former President Bill Clinton declined comment on anything related to Ms. Clinton and Talk magazine. The spokesperson reiterated a standing policy of not discussing anything related to Chelsea Clinton.

This is not the first courtship of a member of the Clinton family by Talk Magazine, which is edited by Tina Brown and funded in part by Miramax, the film company co-chaired by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

The first issue of Talk, which premiered in September 1999, included an exclusive cover story and interview with then First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Last year, the company’s book division, Talk Miramax Books, pursued the rights to publish Senator Clinton’s autobiography, but lost out to Simon & Schuster, which paid nearly $8 million.

Mr. Weinstein is among the most public supporters of the former First Family, having raised thousands of dollars for the former President and Senator Clinton, as well as former Vice-President Al Gore.

Ms. Brown and Mr. Weinstein also co-hosted a victory party in New York City for Senator Clinton in November 2000 along with Michael Bloomberg.

LOL!! Bill and Hill disgracefully using Chelsea one more time to try to get some attention for themselves. The me-first family rides again!

Let me be the first to point out the lack of MAJOR BARF ALERT!

Daddy's in Australia on 9/ll, Chelsea is a few blocks away.

Can you say made-for-TV movie? Gag me with a giant spoon!

What I find offensive about this is why are the thoughts or experiences of Chelsea Clinton in any way noteworthy? Millions of actual New Yorkers (or even people like myself who lived there for a span of time) have stories and thoughts and have lost friends or loved ones, yet they aren't writing 1200 words for Talk. I love how the Clintons get everything their way - no one can criticize Chelsea, or talk about anything to do with her, but when she wants to abuse her quasi-celebrity on her terms, then it is ok. I am really disgusted by this. I want stories from people who ran fifty flights of stairs to get out of the building or people who spoke to their loved ones on the phone seconds before the Towers collapsed, not Chelsea's drivel about how she was going to maybe, had kind of thought about taking a walk or a run near the Towers that day and could maybe possibly have even, oh my! been in danger herself! Why am I continually able to be further disgusted by these people?

It depends on how you define 2 blocks.

Dust from the World Trade Center probably spread over 11 blocks. That made the coffee shop only 2 blocks awayl

I'm sure she was also talking to people on the airplane with her cell phone for that coffee shop.

I'm sure she also rescued 5 firefighters.

You mean she had more than ONE?
Must be some cash involved somewhere.

Update - The Hijackers in Hell:

Rather than being serviced by 70 virgins as promised, the hijackers have found themselves being serviced by 70 Chelsea Clintons. Say the hijackers, Clinton is neither a virgin, nor worth being serviced by.

Without a doubt, she's thinking about a future political career in NYC.

I had that same thought, but then I decided that being in Talk magazine doen't mean it's noteworthy...

You got "Chelsea", "Tina", and "write" in the title, and you STILL need a barf alert?

...., a Stanford graduate who is set to enter Oxford University in England later this fall to study international relations.

So just when does the fall term start at Oxford? She was enrolled at Stanford and hardly attended. Seems like she graduated awfully fast. Course it was arranged for her to get credits for writing about her experiences while traveling the world, on our dime, with Mummy and Daddy.

I want them all to shut up and go away. BTW, has anyone actually heard Chelsea speak even one word?

She might talk about how Bin Laden has tried to kill her numerous times over the years but she didn't want to say anything because she didn't want the attention.

Actually, this whole thing is marginalizing the Clintons. Chelsea writing about her experiences will be nothing more than load of feelings based drivel. The idea of her writing an article is ludicrous, and will be treated as such by most of the writing establishment. As a side note, can you imagine if Chelsea had been hurt or killed at WTC? I shudder to think how the self-serving duo would have used the death of their daughter to further their themselves.

Didn't she say that she 'felt like a porn star' once? I can't remember the occasion.

Yep. Lifetime made for t.v. movie: Moment of Truth: The Clintons and the WTC: It could have been worse, it could have been us.
