Questions?

It's like Medicare; everytime you think you've got the HICFA billing form problems ironed out, they change the form with a new set of unknown rules to be mastered before they will pay you.
But lately I'm sure I died and because Hell was full, they sent me to Zork.
Cheers!
To: John Robinson
Whew! I thought I was going to have to replace my monitor, everything started to look different. LOL
All kidding aside: Thanks for the detailed explanation!
To: John Robinson
Are these going to be made available for general reply posting?
The beauty of FR has always been an interface common to all. But, if favored style sheets become common, seems to me like that will make it easier to radically alter the look and feel of the place. I can see it now, "Get your style sheets here - one special made to suit your personality."
I really do hope that I am dead wrong... 8^)

I like my design choices, but few people agree with me. So let 'em do the job themselves. ;-)
Seriously, I really do like the idea of a customizable Free Republic. The more gadgets that can be tweaked, the better, IMHO.
My job will be to hammer together an HTML guideline to coordinate HTML usage. Such as using <EM> to highlight, and <I> for italicizing. Or coming up with something different (like using a CLASS="hi" for highlighting.)
To: John Robinson
So the marquee feature is disabled?
If so, wht if I type in < marquee > (w/o the spaces of course) a hundred thousand million billion times will tht make it work?

I dunno. Try it and let me know. :-)
To: John Robinson
Hay John I like it just fine, except for the indentation: it seems that the threads would be smaller without tht thingie, but I understand there is an important reason for it.

"..a customizable Free Republic.."
Well - no one can say it will be 'dull' here, never has been, of course ..*bg*
If all were to be client-side, I'd not be frantically looking for the pink liquid right now... but, then the wife tells me I've become, an ol' stick in the mud' anyway - LOL

Not only that, but reading narrow text is easier. Six to ten words across is optimum, which is one reason why newspaper columns are narrow.

Just a heads-up: I've stumbled across a technical glitch of some sort. Occasionally when loading
http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/latest?ao=1
I get articles from a specific topic (Culture/Society, Current Events, etc.) instead of from every topic.

Question? Will your filter filter out Mean-Spirited, Arrogant, Condescending Liberals ?
Really, Thanks. I'll cancel my Eye Doctor appointment.
To: Dumb_Ox
Very odd. Thanks for the heads-up.
To: John Robinson
All I wanna know is if my "win" on the Trash This Thread thread had any effect on the final outcome.
:-)
To: John Robinson
Not only that, but reading narrow text is easierYes tht is very true...I just squeeze the windows I am using togehter to get tht effect, but I see your reasoning...I should have know not to question you...lol

Questions? I suppose not as I haven't a clue what you are talking about.
To: John Robinson, RikaStrom
At a later date a kinder gentler interface will be created. Bumping you, Rikateacha! I eagerly await the "kinder, gentler" instructions! Mr. Robinson, this is all over my head, and so I rely on your expertise alone, trusting that you are making FR safer for sandbox kids like me!
Perhaps you can sift all this through your patient, kind, and knowledgable hands for me, dear Rika. I have been "homeschooling" for the past week, and have a legitimate "note" to bring into WFTD class today to excuse my absence! ( :
To: John Robinson
I forgot to mention:
- The ALIGN attribute had been temporarily disabled on IMG and TABLE tags due to text flowing into replies below. This problem has been fixed. ALIGN has been re-enabled for IMG and TABLE tags.
To: John Robinson
"As a side-effect and benefit, it closes open tags."
THAT is the greatest and most welcome news of all, John.
But.. just think - we don't HAVE to close anything now. I can just see people doing that as a general rule here, and then wondering what happened when they try the same thing on one of their own webpages when the habit is well entrenched .. LOL.

The blockquote thing sucks. What was the problem with "rouge" quotes anyhow?
To: Ron C.
Oh. The customizable articles are only for the viewer -- that is, each viewer will be able to customize the appearance of articles for themselves only. However, they can share their style sheets with others. IOW, it will be client-side.
To: Inspector Harry Callahan
If you really hate the blockquotes I think there is a work around. Give me a couple minutes.
To: John Robinson
Although not a HTML question, I used to search for articles using
source:"*" and
author:"*". Now when I do that I get
No posts found in 0.184 seconds. Is this search feature no longer available?
To: John Robinson Syncro
Thanks, John.
Sync, what are you doing up so early/late?
To: John Robinson
| Personally, I think the changes in design are great, but I hear a lot of people complaining about the use of blockquote to prevent reply spoofs. My HCI (human computer interface) teacher would suffer a heart attack if I suggested an unregular margin as standard :) |

I use a web access tool to do a partial view source to copy articles into the post article block. I'm getting an error code most of the time when I hit the post article button.
Is it possible that these recent changes are associated with this problem?

To: John Robinson
I really like the indents. It makes it easier for me to read.
I don't quite understand the style sheet though. Does that apply to the threads or to the profile page?
One specialty item you haven't seen to though ... < /ignorant creep> LOL
To: John Robinson
I don't know what you said, but it sounds good...I think.

Can you put a short blurb on the "post" page? I spent 10 minutes trying to figure out why I couldn't close the < BLOCKQUOTE > thingie.

So MARQUEE has been disabled, eh? I just tried it and this appears to be so. Bummer.
To: JulieRNR21
JuleiRNR21 = JulieRNR21. Need coffee...
MARQUEE no longer works. Darn.
To: Movemout,John Robinson
I don't know if mine is the same, but I get an error often now when I press the Preview button. This happens almost every time I hit the button. If I go "back" and then hit it again it works. There is also a considerable lag in the response time. Here is the error text:
ERROR

While trying to retrieve the URL: N/A
The following error was encountered:

End of error message.
Thanks for doing everything else though John. And I would just like to say, I guess I'm in the minority around here. I love the choice of page colors etc. IOW - I like your style! :)

I haven't the foggiest idea what any of this means, but good job. Thanks!
(That was a test.)
To: John Robinson
Very cool. Me like.
Can you publish a list of forbidden tags for us? Any chance you'll ever let <IFRAME>'s come back? There are some threads that really could benefit from it.
Can we use all tags in our custom style sheets or only the ones you've listed? Can you tell us more about <p class=thisclass> tags? When we upload a style sheet, does it become our default style sheet? It looks like you're planning to let us use other people's style sheets too. Are you going to give us a list of them to choose from? Are we going to be able to select a default style sheet when we post a thread?
Gee, I've got too many questions. I'll just wait until you tell us more. This is all very cool, John Rob. Nice work.
To: John Robinson
John,
I've already gotten used to the new settings....and one thing is standing out. The hyperlinks at the end of each post are starting to stand out like a sore thumb.
I would think the most important part of any thread is the articles and the replies, and thus the last line, the 'reply', 'private reply', etc. are probably the least important.
Would you consider making the font smaller for those? Or perhaps a lighter color? THey "seem" to "stand out" right now.

I tried various work-arounds to no avail. Negative margins are not valid, and absolute positioning affects not only the left position but the top as well, causing a real good mess.
Give 'em a couple days, I think they'll grow on you. The indents look even better with the new forum software, I'm hoping for a public preview sometime next month.
To: John Robinson
It sucks. I'm leaving. I hated this place all along. Everyone sucks. Opus Opus Opus. People hate things. I'm going liberal. Pout Pout Pout.

Thanks for keeping all informed.

To: John Robinson
"Page cannot be displayed" and then when I go back to the post article page my content i.e. author, date, source, article text, etc is blank. It's kind of frustrating after you type all that stuff.

Personal style sheets? I shall try it out. No other forum in the universe offers this. Until I do, I thank you for ditching bookman font. Please leave at default.
I like Tahoma and everything else bugs me. I set my browser fonts to tahoma font.
