KABUL: A test of the Taliban's anti-aircraft guns sent residents of Afghanistan's capital scurrying for cover on Friday, panicked into thinking the United States was attacking.
Bursts of continuous firing erupted from positions in the hills around Kabul, where Taliban fighters have dug in air defences against expected U.S. attacks.
A Taliban official confirmed the firing was a test.
"We all thought the war with America had began," said one resident, who was having breakfast when the firing began.
"The sudden repeated firing was like a shock and a signal that my turn to die had come."
Afghanistan has been in a state of high anxiety since September 11 in anticipation of attacks by the United States in pursuit of Osama Bin Laden and his Taliban protectors.
The Saudi-born militant -- who lives as a "guest" of the Taliban -- is the chief suspect in the devastating attacks on New York and Washington.
"It was terrible moments for all of us," said one resident. "We were utterly scared and expected that the big bang from the sky was either a bomb or missile that would hit at any moment."
Scores of residents fled in panic, returning to their homes only after news spread that it was a test.
"You could see people pouring on the streets to find out what was going on," said a shopkeeper. "The relief came when the firing finished and Taliban fighters told us that everything was under control."

On Friday, September 28, nationally syndicated conservative talk host Hugh Hewitt described this photo on his radio show, citing FreeRepublic as his source, and giving credit to the post by ASA Vet in particular.
Since then, Hugh's webmistress, Lynne (the WebXena) has reported HUNDREDS of requests for a link to this photo, and has posted a link to a DIFFERENT FR THREAD, with an image posted by FReeper archy, on www.HughHewitt.com.
An earlier thread with this image was started by RaceBannon on 9/27/2001 at 12:30:59 PDT.
1 - Is there an EARLIER post of this image anywhere on Free Republic?
2 - Does anyone know who "Bob McCown" is?
(MOST images posted seem to have the name "Bob McCown" printed in the lower right-hand corner.)
3 - Who is the REAL creator of this masterpiece? (And, can you PROVE it?)

Just as the "SoreLoserman" graphic, which was popularized here by our own Registered, gave FreeRepublic.com EXTRAORDINARY press coverage, perhaps we can also get some very good (free) PR from THIS photo, too.
I can find no earlier reference to it posted anywhere ELSE on the Internet. Can YOU?
Something smells fishy here.
I received it via E-mail from an ex-ASA friend at 3:41 PM (EDT) on 9/26/01.
The original had the word "receive" spelled incorrectly.
I posted the image to FR with the incorrect spelling but corrected it,
once the error was brought to my attention.
The original sent to me, had no URL so I uploaded it to an Image file
on my wifes website to creat a URL to reference on the FR post.
I'll e-mail my friend to see if he can determine who sent it to him.
Bottom line is, I did not creat it, and I have no idea who did,
nor do I know Bob McCown.
