With the amount of information that members have supplied her to review I am becoming more and more confident that her senior years will be as comfortable she wishes. She is not lazy, or a drunk. Currently she and her husband are healthy, fine people. I think this is the boost that she needs to get her past the doubt of "Can it be done?" and "Can I do it?" I have had tons of FReepmail from others telling me about how they did it and I'm confident she can and will also.

This post has done so much to help her and others I can only wish I had done it two years ago when I first found FR.

$60,000.00 a year for caregiver help. OUCH! The local rest homes are now running about $6000 to $6500 per month in Sparks, Nevada

With more and more people retiring every year this price will only go up!

My wife and I are currently attending "Financial Peace University" a course in personal finance managemetn from Dave Ramsey. Dave does not hesitate in telling it like it is. He advocates no credit cards, cahs only. No mortgage and at least 3 to 4 months expenses in the bank at all times. These are just the tip of the ice berg with him. So far, we have 2 more sessions to attend, out of 13, and are well on our way. Mush of what we have learned we are applying to the in-laws, yard sales, auctions, etc.

Yes, at 53 someone can be "old" or they can be "young", it's all attitude. When she plunges into the workforce and begins looking for a job, she must see herself as a worthy employee who has much to offer an employer, she needs to honestly assess her talents and put aside all self-doubts. She'll have to view working as an exciting new adventure---and not be afraid, fear and hesitancy are what knocks you out in an interview.

Also everything that works for someone who is 25 ---certifications as well as finding good mentors and networking, works for someone who is 53 and entering the workforce. Anyone new in a job should realize the importance of building a mentor relationship even if her mentor is much younger.
