A Marines Perspective
WKOR Denver

Posted on 10/07/2001 11:47:00 AM PDT by Texas Mom

From a U.S. Marine Corps Harrier pilot (aired on WKOA Denver, 28 SEP)

A Military Man's Perspective

The tragedy that befell all of us on September 11th shocked America.

America no longer feels safe. Many of you have said, "The government should have known! 30 Billion Dollars is spent on intelligence! What about the Military!?"

Just a reminder, America, you voted our government into office. For years you allowed some dishonest politicians and twisted television media personalities to shape your ideas about the defense of our nation. Why?

Because most Americans were too lazy to look beyond the three minute sound-bites on the evening news. Here's a news flash not being broadcast much: "On September 11th, America had the exact level of protection, both military and intelligence, that it was willing to pay for".

Only yesterday the Congress and the Senate approved 40 BILLION dollars as a "Down Payment" to fight this War. A short time ago, our politicians said a 100 Million dollar increase for the Navy budget was substantial. In that same bill they ordered the Navy to conduct an 85 Million Dollar Study on.......they wanted Breast Cancer research. Yes, America, your elected officials decided that the US Navy needed more mammograms and less missiles.

Was this an under the table sneaky move? No, it was right out in the open.

The Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of the Navy both opposed it.

A New York Senatorial Candidate (Yes, she's the one) was enraged that the Military would be so sexist and irresponsible to the needs of civilians and wanted the Navy to give the money back immediately! But the media paid it little mind. So, America paid little attention.

Did any one ever watch CSPAN? Particularly when the Heads of our Armed Services essentially begged OUR representatives to give the Military more money to fight terrorism and maintain a strong defense? Did you see the debates by the Heads of the Intelligence Services that terrorism was the new threat? They told the committees of Congress that the CIA, the FBI, and the Service did not have the money to build the necessary intelligence networks in the areas where terrorists were being harbored. They warned again and again that there was clear and present danger within America's borders. Americans must have been watching one of their other 114 satellite channels.

The Military said: "We need more money to maintain military readiness and Combat Training." America Answered : "What the Military needs is Sensitivity Training! You're all sexist homophobes! I saw it on 60 Minutes!" The Military said: "We need to recruit more Americans into the military. We need to increase our force." America Answered: "You're not taking my kids!

We're going to shut down the ROTC programs at our high schools and universities, because you discriminate against alternative lifestyles!

ROTC teaches CHILDREN (under 21) how to shoot guns! You just want another Columbine! Rosie and Oprah say so!"

The Military said: "We can't keep interfering in the civil wars of small insignificant countries. It wastes our time, expends our resources, decreases training, and demoralizes our troops. The men and women of the United States are Warriors trying to defend OUR nation, we are not the third world's police force." America Answered: "You heartless bastards! Can't you see the tear in the eye of that starving child!?! There are flies on her face for Christ's Sake! Get Moving! Jesse Jackson on CNN said that is what we pay you for!"

The Military Asked: "Why isn't America enraged over the terrorist attack on the USS COLE that killed seventeen AMERICAN Sailors? How about the Air Force barracks bombed in Saudi Arabia? The embassy staffs in Africa? The Soldiers mutilated and dragged through the streets in Somalia?" America Answered: "We don't have time right now! We're busy defending Animal Rights! Our schools are handing out automatic weapons! The federal government is discriminating against cross-dressing Bolivian hermaphrodites! The police are all members of the Ku Klux Klan! The lack of Ozone is ruining my tan! If they cut deeper into Food Stamps those poor women will have to move down to Size 18/20 dresses! AND THE WORST! Corporations are raising the prices of their products sooo high I might not be able to afford the multi-disc DVD Player for my 36'" digital-ready TV! Besides, YOU GUYS ARE PAID TO DIE!

So, America, while you sit on your couch or around your office coffee pots and ask, "Why did those terrorists kill innocent civilians? Why didn't they go after the Military?" remember this, America: They already had, but America didn't care. These Terrorists realized that they needed to kill American Civilians, and lots of them, before they could have their desired reaction from the people of this country. Well, now they have it.

Machiavelli pointed out that democracies do not long survive the people becoming licentious, that is, democracy cannot survive the people refusing to distinguish right from wrong.

We have a probably majoritarian political party whose only position is that wrong is right. The last President was elected and re-elected who was of the lowest moral character, whose "right" was whatever his depraved imagination desired. His wife is of much worse character and is now a Senator.

Democracy will not survive under these conditions.

That is what we have had the past eight years. This marine said it all..

"Because most Americans were too lazy to look beyond the three minute sound-bites on the evening news. Here's a news flash not being broadcast much: "On September 11th, America had the exact level of protection, both military and intelligence, that it was willing to pay for".

The whole of America finds itself in a leftist utopian zone of peace welfare mentality. We want arabs and coalitions to defend us, the result is our Arab mob protection does not inform the CIA of an impending attack, the CIA is too busy talking about sensitivity to gays instead of figuring whether the Arabs are not screwing us.

And as far as the marines, America does not even want the burden of seeing our boys shedding any drop of blood for freedom, so we engage them in sensitivity training too and shoving down their throat arrogant women pretending to be like the guys.

Then we have the peace nicks talking about collateral damage but forgetting that their welfare peace dividend in Vietnam cost millions of South Vietnamese lives killed by the North.

Ah, what peace is that! An expensive one indeed, one demanding peace keepers to sit like sitting ducks and not fire, one demanding South Vietnamese blood by the millions, one demanding that we be protected by Arab coalitions abroad, since we have no man power, but that turns agaisnt us and kills 5600 people at the WTC.

It's time we ended the peace collateral damage, it's time we ended our welfare mentality. Clearly, life at times is not worth living if freedoms and sanity goes down the toilet.

Give me liberty or give me death. The hell with collateral damage of war for liberty.

May the martyred ghosts of freedom drag down to hell the cowards and peace activists when their time come.

If we had a military draft Americans would have cared a lot more about foreign affairs and their elected officials.

Yes,making mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep

Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;

An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit

Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an""Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?"

But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll-

The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll

O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

You don't happen to have a copy of "An American" by Kipling do you? I don't have a copy at the moment and I think its quite apt, if I remember.

I'm looking through my library- no luck so far. But here is one of my favorites, as a simple soldier: HYMN BEFORE ACTION (1896)

(1)

The Earth is full of anger

The seas are dark with wrath,

The Nations in their harness

Go up against our path:

Ere yet we loose the legions

Ere yet we draw the blade,

Jehovah of the Thunders,

Lord God of Battles, aid!

(6)

E'en now their vanguard gathers.

E'en now we face the fray-

As Thou didst help our fathers,

Help Thou our host today.

Fulfilled of signs and wonders,

In life, in death made clear-

Jehovah of the Thunders,

Lord God of Battles, hear!

Evidently this is the first some one us have seen it. Many of the vanities aren't news either. Unless this is a hoax, which I don't think it is. Does it really hurt to have it posted again? Granted. I got it in email for the first time this morning. Many of us don't sit here 24/7 and read everything that is posted every day and when we don't they get buried but those who do. Sorry.

Don't worry about this moron. Some of these folks regard themselves as "assistant site monitors", and just scroll through threads looking for posters to lambaste. These are the folks who used to volunteer to watch the class while the 5th-Grade teacher was out oif the room! Insufferable self-important busybodies.

Evidently this is the first some one us have seen it.

That doesn't matter and is beside the point. Please read the rules. There is a REASON why responsible contributors are asked to carefully search before posting. Remember that we are ALL of us guests here. We don't have to worry about the disk space, or the throughput, or storage or archiving. Our hosts do that.

But we can obey the simple and straightforward rules--which aren't even that strictly enforced as the Robinsons expect us all to behave as they wish we would.

If you want to post something, do a search first. It won't ALWAYS work but most of the time it will. For example, try this: go to "Search" and type in "Harrier" in the dialogue box. Within about two seconds, look what comes up:

A letter from a US Marine Harrier Pilot by GatorGirl.

Voila, it's easy as that.

If you find what you wanted to post, then feel free to jump on THAT thread and "bump" it, thus bringing it to everyone's attention again.

I'm not trying to be harsh; I'm just trying to emphasize that there are reasons multiple-posting is considered "rude" on FR, and this oft-heard excuse--a lame one at that--that "I haven't seen it before" is beside the point, because you can always "bump" the earlier thread.

A word to the wise is often sufficient.

It has nothing to do with being "assistant site monitors," it has to do with simple courtesy and obeying the few rules that our hosts have put forth. There are reasons for them.

So tell me, who is the "moron": The person who wants to obey the rules (like Pres. Bush) or the one who does as he sees fit (say, Osama bin Laden)?

You make the call.

An American
1894

The American Spirit speaks:
If the Led Striker call it a strike,
Or the papers call it a war,
They know not much what I am like,
Nor what he is, My Avatar.

Throuh many roads, by me possessed,
He shambles forth in cosmic guise;
He is the Jester and the Jest,
And he the Text himself applies.

The Celt is in his heart and hand,
The Gaul is in his brain and nerve;
Where, cosmopolitanly planned,
He guards the Redskin's dry reserve

His easy unswept hearth he lends
From Labrador to Guadeloupe;
Till, elbowed out by sloven friends,
He camps, at sufferance, on the stoop.

Calm-eyed he scoffs at Sword and Crown,
Or, panic-blinded, stabs and slays:
Blatant he bids the world bow down,
Or cringing begs a crust of praise;

Or, sombre-drunk, at mine and mart,
He dubs his dreary breathren Kings.
His hands are black with blood -- his heart
Leaps, as a babe's, at little things.

But, through the shift of mood and mood,
Mine ancient humour saves him whole --
The cynic devil in his blood
That bids him mock his hurrying soul;

That bids him flout the Law he makes,
That bids him make the Law he flouts,
Till, dazed by many doubts, he wakes
The drumming guns that -- have no doubts;

That checks him foolish-hot and fond,
That chuckles through his deepest ire,
That gilds the slough of his despond
But dims the goal of his desire;

Inopportune, shrill-accented,
The acrid Asiatic mirth
That leaves him, careless 'mid his dead,
The scandal of the elder earth.

How shall he clear himself, how reach
Your bar or weighed defence prefer --
A brother hedged with alien speech
And lacking all interpreter?

Which knowledge vexes him a space;
But, while Reproof around him rings,
He turns a keen untroubled face
Home, to the instant need of things.

Enslaved, illogical, elate,
He greets the embarrassed Gods, nor fears
To shake the iron hand of Fate
Or match with Destiny for beers.

Lo, imperturbable he rules,
Unkempt, desreputable, vast --
And, in the teeth of all the schools,
I -- I shall save him at the last!

"Marine" would have worked just as well, though. I'm serious: I go to great lengths to make sure something hasn't been posted. I even restrict myself to just one newspaper source, so that I can quickly check to see that it hasn't been posted.

It's really far more important than people here understand. (Just ask anyone who was around about a year ago, when they were forced to changeover the server, and FR was down for several days!)

I saw Illbay recently on an innocently happy-about-Marines thread. He was endlessly disparaging, saying that all of us were dangers to the Republic, eager to shoot civilians, etc. On this thread I think he has just found a way to push his weight around.

LOL, I always found something counterintuitive in that.

Not that I don't get the joke... but seriously, haven't you ever noticed that eating "healthy" is also eating expensively? Compare how much pasta or rice you can buy with the same amount of money you spend on fresh fruits and veggies.

Another irony here is that many of the "poor women" on food stamps are the wives of service men, or they are active duty military themselves. (Ever seen a Navy paycheck?)

I don't think the problem or solution of unsupportive citizens lies in the size of women on food stamps.
