Some Got Warning: Don't Go Downtown on Sept. 11
New York Daily News ^ | October 12, 2001 | GREG B. SMITH

Posted on 10/12/2001 2:20:46 AM PDT by sarcasm

ederal investigators have received evidence that some Middle Easterners in the New York area were warned ahead of time to stay out of lower Manhattan the morning of Sept. 11, the Daily News has learned.

The FBI was able to confirm several such warnings occurred but has been unable to discover the source of the warnings.

Agents with the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force have interviewed school officials in Jersey City and Brooklyn and questioned members of a Bronx mosque about the warnings, sources told The News.

James Margolin, a spokesman for the FBI's New York office, confirmed that agents were looking into several reports of warnings that preceded the attack against the World Trade Center.

"Among the e-mails and tips we received are a number of reports of people overhearing people boasting about or warning about coming attacks," he said.

Suspicious Comments

He declined to discuss specifics and would not say whether any of the 600-plus people detained in the terror probe were questioned about pre-attack warnings.

But officials and sources familiar with the investigation said the incidents include the following:

Jersey City school administrators confirmed that several days before the attack, a student of Middle Eastern descent issued a vague warning not to travel into lower Manhattan the morning of Sept. 11.

Joanne Kenny, associate superintendent of the Jersey City public schools, said, "Crisis staff determined that comments made or notes written were serious enough so we called the juvenile bureau of the Jersey City police and they followed up."

Sources Not Found

Jersey City police did not return calls seeking comment, but a source said the matter wound up being investigated by the FBI's Joint Terrorist Task Force.

Kenny wouldn't discuss the nature of the warning or reveal the name of the student who made the comment. But a source said federal authorities investigated the matter and could not determine the source of the warning.

"They ran into a dead end, and whoever may have given the warning denied it," the source said.

In the Bronx, federal investigators received reports about a similar warning at a mosque, sources said. The sources would not reveal the name of the mosque.

Sources with the Joint Terrorist Task Force questioned dozens of members of the mosque, many of whom told agents they had been given a vague warning to stay out of lower Manhattan on Sept. 11, sources said.

One source said investigators again hit a dead end when the mosque's hierarchy denied having prior knowledge of the attack.

The source pointed out that in years past, law enforcement had received tips about warnings to stay away from specific locales and of planned attacks that never materialized.

"There's a cry-wolf aspect to this that you need to put this in context," the source said.

At Brooklyn's New Utrecht High School, the FBI was notified that a Pakistani student in a bilingual class "made a comment to a teacher the week prior about the twin towers," said Karen Finney, spokeswoman for the Board of Education.

Finney would not reveal the nature of the comment, but the Journal-News of Westchester reported yesterday that the student pointed at the tower during a heated political argument and declared, "Look at those two buildings. They won't be here next week."

School officials would not release the name of the student, but said he was still attending classes at New Utrecht. They said they notified New York police and that the matter was turned over to the FBI.

"I don't know what the status of the FBI's investigation is," Finney said.

This seems to me to be evidence of "moderate peace-loving Muslims" not giving a fat rat's a$$ about anybody but themselves (meaning, Muslims were warned, but real Americans [read 'everyone else'] weren't). And the ones with the information, instead of demonstrating goodwill in the land they have come to, chose to protect their Muslim brothers.

When will the USA learn?

If all the dozens of people who heard the warnings "can't remember" who told them, it will say a lot about "moderate Islam" won't it?

I wondered that too, when I heard that San Francisco mayor Willie Brown said he was warned on the evening of Sept. 10 not to take a flight to the east coast the next day. With that many people plotting for that long a time, there had to be a lot of buzz going on.

Maybe a few indictments on treason charges would loosen up some memories.

They knew beforehand, they remained silent, and people died--lots of them.

They know now (about pending attacks), they are remaining silent, and more may yet die.

Why does that have to be if they are "peace-loving" moderate Muslims?

I think the goal of Muslims in the USA is to make the USA in the image of other Islamic republics--by force and wanton destruction of all non-Muslims (aka "infidels")

I was talking to a student last week (I live near a university) - He said his Eqyptian roommate got a call from Dad - demanding that he come home immediately (on Sept 8).

He also said his roommate didn't come back and is rumored to be detained by the Feds.

"Moderate Muslim" is a myth"

Don't be fooled. There is no massive, public denounciation of the slaughter by the so-called "moderates."

Where is the purge of these murderers by their own "moderate" brethren?

George W. and the rest of the politicians would try to have us believe that this terrorism is the result of a "few" muslim radicals...

Facts are facts...Look at the article...College kids, high school kids, mosque members, foreign nationals in their own countries,,,,,All of these muslims knew of the attacks and murders to come and not one said a thing...We're talking thousands and maybe more...

No doubt these muslims love America...But it is pretty clear that they are trying for a muslim America instead of a Christian America...

Along with the recent warning by the Feds about new terror attacks, I will add, not only keep an eye out for unusual activity (by Arabs) but watch out for all Arabs...Watch 'em....Keep an eye on them...Watch 'em close...Even the little ones are taught to hate you...

" the mosque's hierarchy denied having prior knowledge of the attack "

...and surely they'd all be happy to voluntarily take lie detector tests so investigators could eliminate them from further investigation.

That does it. We have become a nation of morons.

Of course they would deny it!

D'OH!

The Mass Murder event was historic, and the seriousness plain even to the people interviewed and the consequences self-evident.
Even the simple-minded can see the risk of even implicit complicity.

That of the 8 to 10 million Muslims in the US had a clue they deemed important enough to share with their fellow citizens speaks volumes about the nature of the problem and its eventual resolution.

I can say that I have no problem voicing my opinion about Islam, and am not likely to be lulled, ever, into believing that it is benign and that it belongs in a "free" society.

Islam is inimical to every principle of a free and democratic society, has always been and its nature will never allow it to change.

Had an idea: If any Freepers look vaguely Middle Eastern, dress up like an Arab, but put on a U.S. flag pin. You could also monogram a shirt in Arabic with, "Proud to be an American". Then take a stroll through a Middle Eastern neighborhood in Brooklyn or Detroit and see what happens. One of those hidden videocams would be helpful as would a team following you at a distance with another camera and a telephoto lens. If you get assaulted we have interesting footage for the evening news as well as a documentd violation of the "hate crime" laws (don't forget the personal lawsuit tool). Anybody out there bold enough to smoke out our country's enemies by serving as bait? It also occurs to me that some of those mosques could use a few hidden cameras to see what the imam is really preaching. Let the sun shine in on evil.

Maybe the FBI has infiltrated or has 'spies' in the islame community. And this current 'red alert' is the result of what they've heard through the grapevine.

If the alert is because they expect the wackos to pattern an attack after the US COLE, perhaps the tankers sitting in US harbors need to be watched and armed.

They don't even deny that they think the USA should become an Islamic state, they want that for the world. Then they believe there will be peace because everyone will obey Islamic law or be killed. That's the kind of peace they love.

I remember last month reading the list of victims and noticing that there were very few, only a handful, of people on the missing list that had middle eastern islamic names. I thought it was suspicious considering that there are a lot of middle eastern people who live and work in New York. I suspected that people were warned at their mosques.

I DO NOT TRUST A MUSLIM.

They teach that if you arent not a muslim, your as good as trash and are an infidel deserving of death. How can we trust that? Unless someone can convince me that there is no such thing in the Koran (qu'ran) then I may rethink my position but until then BLAH!

Oh thats right - I forgot. You can't stop and question minorities. Racial profiling don't ya know!! So what if 7000+ Americans lost their lives!! We protected these peoples privacy and that is the most important thing.

Because of our commitment to worship at the alter of political correctness, the US will never "learn" because we are no longer free to speak the obvious; that some people/groups are dangerous threats.

Political correctness is now entrenched in law.

Suspicion that someone may be a criminal or terrorist is now considered a hate crime and a violation of a persons civil rights. (US Government: “Why would you think he is a terrorist? Because he is an Arab-American? Are you a racist, bigot?”)

Tolerance, inclusion, diversity, and political correctness will be the end of western civilization.

(What's really bizarre is that instead of accepting the fact the some people in this world are dangerous, this is going to be another opportunity for the west to prove its moral superiority and push for even more diversity).
