Thank you. Actually, I was probably a quarter of a mile from impact when I saw the fireball. Did not see the plane because we were overlooking DC thinking something would happen there. I remember knowing the instant I felt the concusion that it had been a plane. Since I was looking over the top of the Pentagon, my first thought was that it had hit the center courtyard. I was with three other people and we peeled off before going over the Potomac and spent the next 15 minutes trying to get out of the way of emergency vehicles. As we got back around on route 110 (I believe it was 110), we could see that the initial fire was along the whole side of the building (Probably from fuel).

Since that day, I ask just about everyone I meet, "Where were you when it hit?" I should be writing the stories down somewhere. I have talked to a number who actually saw the impact. Many did not sleep a wink for a week or more.

This is the part that gets me the most. I had just heard someone say over the cube wall that a plane had hit the WTC. I opened up a browser, and the first thread in your list was the one I had clicked on. There were 13 replies to it when I first opened it, and these were the last two:

Thanks for this thread. I read through all of the posts here, and thought about you folks recording history as it happened. I wasn't on Free Republic at the time of all of this happening on 9/11. I was in one of our company's break rooms watching all of it on CNN and MSNBC.

I left for work about 8:10am Central, and by the time I heard what happened, the second tower had already been hit. It's a 12-minute drive to work for me, and I can remember the entire time just wanting to get to work and get in front of the TV. I watched the WTC Tower two collapse live on TV -- that freaked me out! I had to take a break from the news a few minutes later and get back to my cubicle -- the Tower One collapsed shortly afterward.

I would like to see the admins at FR keep these threads online -- perhaps a special page linked from the front page of freerepublic.com. Freepers here recorded history as it happened. I challenge any un-American "peace" protestor to read those threads and say that we should "give peace a chance".

We gave peace a chance. Now it's time to give war a chance.

Thank you for these links even though I get a kick in the gut and the tears flow each time I see them. I was in Alabama with my 80 year old Mom on that day and as not at my computer with my FR family and I was just lost. My Mom was in total deniel and got so upset whenever I started crying therefore I had to put on a good front. I came back to GA that evening and cried all the way home listening to Neil Boortz and the stories. None of us will ever forget where we were that day.

How'd u find out about FR? I vaguely remember going through Drudge's site during the recount mess.

I think I first saw it back in 97. Sometime that year there was a link on Drudge called, "The Whitewater File." Then in 98 I didn't have a computer because I had been using my sons laptop from his work. When I got back on line in late 98 or 99 the Whitewater file was gone and I guess I just went hunting for FR. I remember reading posts at that time about how there had been a 'falling-out' between Drudge and the folks at FR, which accounted for Drudge pulling the "file". IMO, there was only one winner in it all, and it wasn't Drudge.

How about you? How did you find FR? You still a student in DC? Been to any FReeps?

I found the thread to free republic on drudges site about four years ago. I was hooked right away. I've been a lurker until this year. Now I am an occasional poster and still a lurker. There is A Wonderful Tribute Here by a NY man named Steve Golding. He also wrote the following (Bold added):

This has been a work-in-progress and began the day after the attack at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. I survived the attack itself by being late to work that day, but I lost many people who were not so lucky. I created the page to honor those I lost, those that America had lost and all of those dedicated, caring human beings who responded to this wanton cowardly act and who we refer to simply as heroes.

This has effected me to the core of my soul. My soul cries out for those that I lost, those I didn't know, for my city, for the Pentagon, for the nation. The page has evolved to what it is now; a remembrance of those that were taken, those who sacrificed their lives in order to sustain our national resolve. We must remember what it is our nation is responding to and keep our flag waving proudly.

Since September 11, I have had the sensation of shaking on the inside and I frequently hold out my hands to make sure that I am not shaking. I suppose that it will subside with time. I know that we will overcome this dark, dark tragedy but I don't think that we will get over it. And I am not too sure that we should ever get over it. We live in a free society but with that freedom comes responsibility. It is our responsibility to continue forward, not allowing these horrific events to change our lives; otherwise the sub-human animals that perpetrated this on us wins.

For those of you who view this as "an opportunity to cease the cycle of violence," I want to remind you that there were 8,000 elementary school children, in grades pre-K through the 5th grades, that had to be evacuated from schools they attended in the shadows of the twin towers - some of whom had parents that worked in one of the 5 buildings that came down; Some of which no longer have mommies, daddies or both. Once we avenge their deaths, once we adequately respond to the worst attack on US soil, then, perhaps, you can talk to me about stopping the cycle of violence, because as far as I am concerned, that is exactly what we are doing right now - making sure that the world knows that when you do this to the United States, you risk unleashing a wrath that you never, ever dreamed of.

We must never forget September 11, America's Day of Emergency, we must remember that there is a price for freedom and a responsibility to freedom. It is our responsibility to defend freedom. Last item and I will get off my soap box: We did not ask for this war. We did not start this war. We will finish this war. We must because if we do not, the message we send is that it is OK to kill thousands of our countrymen and we don't have the resolve to see justice done.

I am humbled by the demand for this page and am deeply, deeply grateful for the overwhelming support for it.
