Staff reports

RALEIGH -- The Century Station Post Office in downtown Raleigh was evacuated Tuesday morning shortly after 10 when a suspicious envelope was discovered in the building.

Police taped off the front and back of the building and part of Martin Street between Salisbury Street and Fayetteville Street Mall as a hazardous materials team prepared to enter the building.

Authorities were not immediately releasing any further information about the incident.

I wondered how long it would take to hit us here in Raleigh.

Hopefully this is yet another false alarm.

RALEIGH -- Haz-Mat teams are on the scene of the Century Post Office in Raleigh's Fayetteville Street mall, where an envelope opened on the second floor of the building contained a suspicious powdery substance, according to officials.

As many as five people may have handled the manilla envelope.

The building policy is that the U.S. marshal who works security there picks up mail from the post office, X-rays it, and delivers it throughout the building.

This envelope was delivered to the second floor, then opened by an employee on that floor, where the bankruptcy court is located.

The building was evacuated around 9:45 a.m., after the discovery was made, and it will not be re-opened until investigators know what the substance was.

Three postal workers handled the piece, as well as the marshal who delivered it and the bankruptcy office employee who opened it.

The employees who may have handled the envelope washed their hands, but the leader of the postal union wants to make sure those employees are also tested for anthrax exposure. He is also concerned that it was about an hour and a half before they washed their hands.

The envelope has been taken from the building to the state lab to test it for anthrax. It is unclear what else the envelope contained.

Officials say the building will be locked down until the lab test results are available.

The first floor of the building houses the post office, the second floor is home to the bankruptcy court, and there are other federal offices on the third and fourth floors, including a field office for Senator John Edwards.

The building is located on Martin Street, which cuts through the mall between Salisbury and Wilmington streets. Those parts of the Fayetteville Street mall have been closed, but traffic is still flowing around the mall.

You know, as soon as I heard they were mailing envelopes loaded with anthrax, it was obvious to me with all the powerful machinery and running this envelope through it that powder would be airborn everywhere in the room. Not to mention coating some of the other mail going through the machines.

I don't know anything about the postal service but maybe some of you do.

Does our mail go initially to a central office to be sorted and sent out to the branch offices? If the answer is yes, then does anyone know if this is our central office here in Raleigh?

Following this line of thinking then, wouldn't it be possible that our mail that we receive residentially could potentially be cross-contaminated simply by coming in contact with contaminated mail?

After all we know now that the Anthrax spores are small enough to leak out of the envelopes. I'm not feelin too safe getting my mail these days.

Ya think the creditors and ultilites would understand if I said I couldn't send in my payment since I was afraid to touch my mail let alone open it? ; )

In a word, NO!

The answer to your other question, I would think, is YES.

I've worried about the same thing (cross contamination of mail). I may be paranoid, but I think I'll ask my children to correspond with me only by e-mail and phone -- especially the ones in NJ.

My daughter in Raleigh was complaining about some white powder on something she received in the mail. I think she said it was plastic recipe cards that came in a bundle. She saved the cards and some of the powder. I told her if this incident turns out to be something she needs to get it tested.

Anyone else in Raleigh receive anything in the mail with white powder?

I haven't heard anything said about what else was in the envelopes sent to Florida, Brokaw, Rather and DC. Anyone know?

I know there was some sort of anti-American message in the DC letters, just can't remember the quote. (my brain is jello)

According to Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., who was briefed on the anthrax exposure at Daschle's office, the letter was taped on all four sides, prompting Daschle's assistant to cut the envelope open with scissors. At that point some white powder leaked out onto a desk.

After reading the note, the aide dropped the letter onto the floor and others in the office gathered around it. Thirty-one people from Daschle's office have tested positive for anthrax.

It is described as "white" in the above story from the Associated Press.

I believe they consider "testing for exposure" to be a nasal swab for spores. They also do a blood test, which I would think would be for antibodies.

Barney remains the single greatest comedic character in the history of television. Take him out of Mayberry and that show would have been like taking a tranquilizer. I have a poster of Barney and a magnet of Barney looking at me in my office as I type.

My daughter clarified the type of pacakage she received.

They were wrapped in plastic and the powder was inside the package on the cards. I thought the powder was on the outside exposed to other mail.

I don't think she has anything to worry about. Just some powder on plastic cards to make them easier to handle.

Well we have an idiot for a governor, a bunch of political whores and morons for legislators, and a plethora of left-wing commie bastards polluting our public schools and universities. And they are all liberals and Democrats too. Maybe Boss Hog Easley will get around to doing something about terrorism after he's finished kissing the next ethnic group's ass for votes and money or making sure preteens are wearing that mandatory bicycle helmet. I feel so safe with Governor Fife at the helm.

Just got this -- thanks for the "send", Constitution Day!! Will be on the lookout here in Charlotte. We've had some "incidents" in the uptown area that turned out to be false alarms. Every incident needs to be seriously assessed -- we are at war with a hidden enemy.
