Well, that is easy. My good old venerable Remington 870, chambered for 3" mag, with a full-choke barrel, for disseminating 000 buck out to a distance of 50 yards with very little scatter.

Of course, I would like to carry the Hastings slug barrel, for those longer range kill opportunities.

A 3" slug will leave an exit wound that you can shove your fist through.

Concur. A 12-gauge can shoot anything from birdies and squirrels (yum!) to people and deer. Not too long-range, so you'll have to stalk, but probably the best all-around choice if, heaven forbid, you're restricted to one gun.

That, or a BFG9000. I really want a BFG9000, but it tends to scorch the meat...

The acoustic, electromagnetic pulse, and microwave cannons all exist now - non-lethal weaponry. The only sci-fi one was from Terminator -- phased plasma rifle.

Ain't it great? Most I've EVER been able to plink with is about 15 rounds, after which my shoulder turns this ugly blue/black color. But MAN what a rush it is to shoot.

This idea has intrigued me for a long time. I actually went through something similar to this scenario.

At one time I owned around 250 guns. After I retired from civil service, I returned to grad school. Although we had good insurance, an unexpected and expensive illness not only took my wife's job, but all our savings etc.

By the time we recovered both physically and financially, I was down to about 10 guns.

Many years ago Skeeter Skelton had a good story (one of his Dobe Grant ones) about this exact idea. I have been told that Sheriff Wilson also of ST did such a story in which he chose the Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 magnum as his last gun.

While I was growing up in a rural area of the Florida Panhandle, just about every rural resident had two guns. A .22 rifle and a 12 guage shotgun. A person could do just fine with that pair. If forced to narrow it down even further, I think I would choose a 12 guage automatic shotgun.

I think I could do just fine tho with a good .22 automatic rifle, and would be tempted, (I might even choose it) to keep a Beretta .22Lr model 70 automatic pistol. I also would be tempted to choose the Ruger Single Six with two cylinders, (.22lr and magnum).

To answer your specific question, Glock 36 (45 auto using 230 grain Hydra Shok jacketed hollow point), if you only have time to get one shot off at close range.

I've seen some pretty impressive groups in the 100+ yard range with a 12 gauge using sabot rounds and a rifled choke tube.

Yep... my 12 gauge pump action shotgun will do just fine. Even Norman Schwarzkopf kept one in his bunker during the Gulf War. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

Just curious, do you guys keep your shotguns loaded or unloaded? I keep mine unloaded with the ammo within arms reach. However, I am always afraid my wife would forget how to load it if an intruder were breaking down the door.

LOVE my HK91. Each member of my family has a mini-14, 1911, 9mm and pump 12g. BUT... if i could have only one it would be 12g pump. With that i will get the rest.
