THE BALLAD OF MIKE MORAN --- Update
dfu | 10-01-01 | dfu

Posted on 11/01/2001 6:00:31 PM PST by doug from upland

Well, FReepers, THE BALLAD OF MIKE MORAN is becoming a reality. For those just tuning in, I wrote a song for fireman Mike Moran after hearing his "Osama bin Laden, you can kiss my royal Irish ass" at the VH1 concert. It was written to the tune of WEARIN' O THE GREEN.

FReeper vetnet, a screenwriter, saw the song and contacted me. We spent considerable time doing a re-write of the original and then he took the bull by the b*lls. Vetnet arranged for studio time, seven professional singers, a digital mixer (if that's the right word), and he put it together today. I am told the singers were on and the song is going to be a blockbuster.

Mike Moran contacted me yesterday by FReepmail and said that he loves the song. I hope this can be a mega fundraiser for the rescue workers. Any suggestions from FReepers as to who can handle donations would be appreciated. (It's a cinch this isn't going to be handled by the Red Cross or the anti-Scout United Way). Also, please call your local radio stations to request it.

Here is the final version.

MIDI - WEARIN' O THE GREEN

The Ballad of Mike Moran

I am Irish and was proud to serve with other firemen,
Who gave their lives for us that day, each one of them a friend,
In remembrance of my brothers who from earthly bonds did pass,
Osama, step right up and kiss my royal Irish ass.

They’re the bravest men I’ve known…and I’ll miss them everyday,
I will keep them in my heart, so they’re never far away,
In remembrance of my brothers, who from earthly bonds did pass,
Osama, step right up and kiss my royal Irish ass,
You’ll pay the price, but first you’ll kiss my royal Irish ass.

Never thinking of their safety, only saving other lives,
They never made it home to see their daughters, sons, or wives,
In remembrance of my brothers who from earthly bonds did pass,
Osama, step right up and kiss my royal Irish ass.

Try to take our freedom and you’ve made a big mistake,
The spirit of America, you’re never going to break.

I am told that songs adjust in the studio. My ear thought it should have been "You will pay, but first you'll kiss my royal Irish ass." And, "And I will miss them everyday." I guess they can squeeze in an extra beat to get "You'll pay the price." Perhaps they stretched out "I'll" so it had an extra beat. Oh, well, I know nothing about music. I just write lyrics.

I have no complaints! My voice breaks more often-than-not these days. I was teasing about being able to blame the breaks on you, rather than myself!

I do know an Irish recording artist who might be interested? Let me know by freep-mail if that tickles your fancy. Thank you for a GREAT and uplifting song!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The song has already been recorded in studio today with seven or eight singers. Mixing will be completed tomorrow and we have ourselves a song.

I just sent the MIDI and lyrics to Rick Dees in Los Angeles. On his website, he has archived Mike's comments.

WSPD in Toledo, Ohio would probably play it. (they are owned by Clear Channel and run Rush, Reagan, Beck, etc.) Send it to the Attention of Scott Sloan.

125 South Superior Toledo, Ohio 43602 Business line 419.244.8321

Maybe e-mailing first would be good: scottsloan@clearchannel.com

Also, please keep this threat running, i.e. post it again periodically. I think it's 'acutely' patriotic and keeps up the spirit.

And one person can't make a difference? Right!!! Kudos to you and Mike Moran. I would think that Bret Hume would do so; he has been adding a KMA to monster bin laden at end of some of his programs lately. Neal Boortz here in Atlanta would probably play it. I'll call his office tomorrow and get information and send to you. As far as donations go, how about the Widows and Orphans Fund of Firemen? Think they have direct control over it and no red tape from red cross. I think Salvation Army does a pretty good job too. What does Mike Moran suggest?

Would the Widows and Orphans Fund handle the merchandise and sent it out for a donation?

Outstanding!

I've been singing in choruses and choirs since I was 4 years old. Wish I could have helped record this one!

I was reading the words while listening to the music from the MIDI file, and I think it fits the beat just fine. Most Irish music moves along at a quick clip, and if you "sing" those couple of phrases in question up-tempo (almost slur the words together) then it works out great!
