Ms. magazine will adopt an activist tone when it appears early next year under new ownership.
The group that rescued the 30-year-old magazine in 1998 by purchasing it from MacDonald Communications Corp., has agreed to transfer ownership to the Feminist Majority Foundation. The foundation, based in Los Angeles, is headed by former National Organization for Women president Eleanor Smeal and will publish the first issue under its guidance in the spring.
Liberty Media for Women LLC was formed by 14 women investors in 1998 to buy the magazine from MacDonald for a reported price of between $3 million and $4 million. The feminist magazine, co-founded in 1971 by Gloria Steinem, resumed publishing in May 1999 as a bimonthly with no advertising.
Steinem said it was important for the magazine to regain its financial footing while it looked for the right partner to expand.
``Ms. had not controlled its own financial life for about a dozen years,'' Steinem said Monday. ``It had accidental owners who bought it together with other magazines. We always wanted to buy it back.''
Liberty Media for Women, formed by such investors as Abigail Disney, grandniece of Walt Disney, and Sandy Lerner, co-founder of Cisco Systems, will transfer ownership to the foundation. The magazine will move its editorial offices to Los Angeles. Most of its New York staff has been laid off and given severance packages related to the move, Steinem said.
Liberty Media for Women will continue under a new board. Steinem will become a consulting editor.
Smeal said the new Ms. will continue to chart literary and pop trends, but will also feature in-depth features on the plight of women internationally and give readers tools to turn information into action. She said the database and mailing lists of the foundation will also help to broaden the magazine's reach.
``It's going to make some of our supporters take Ms. that would not have ordinarily and give to the subscriber more information,'' she said.
The Feminist Majority Foundation was founded by Smeal and philanthropist Peg Yorkin in 1987. It has campus outreach programs at 188 colleges and universities and has been active on a number of issues, including support for the abortion pill RU 486 and support for the plight of women in Afghanistan.
Steinem said she is looking forward to the magazine expanding its reach by publishing collections from past issues and investigating other projects, including starting an international book club or selling health insurance that caters to the needs of women.
plan B, gratuitous sex to new subscribers.
sheesh.
I am still trying to figure out exactly what that means (poor grammatical construct for a "publisher"). Does this mean that an entity that doesn't want ms mag will be "required" to pay them money? Does it mean that femi-nazi supporters are expected to pony up for an ownership stake (non voting preferred, naturally)?
The good news is that I agree that this formerly nominal cash producer will now be a gross cash consumer thanks to no advertising. We need to pay close attention to see to it that it stays advertisement free due to the owner's tax exempt status as a non profit organization.
Let them sneak in so much as one ad, or more slyly, one article favoring a product (such as the human pesticide ru 486) while taking one cent in "contributions" from the products manufacturer, and BLAMMO! sue to have their tax exempt staus revoked.
Imagine how high the rates would be for a bunch of hairy fat chicks like Rosie O'Donnel. The mental health premiums alone would be double and other plan. Although going in their favor would be the lack of any pregnancy related expenses.
Uhhhhhh, are they good-looking?
When their resources have been exhausted, it will probably cost us all money through tax subsidized emergency government funding, no way out.
How come I can't have a magazine named after me? I know it would be far more interesting! Stories about my coon hound would entertain far more people than Rosie's interminable self-centered photo ops.
And my food may not be as fancy as Martha Stewart's, but people actually like to eat it!!
As a bonus, I would be the only magazine that didn't suck up to the Clintons!!
When a woman goes by "ms",
1) Do you think she is a vocal to militant feminist?
2) Do you think she will use her gender to claim victimhood?
Haven't heard how this is going. Any data?
