USO Canteen Freeper Style

War has come to our shores. It was committed on American soil.  We have been able to live in Freedom only because of those who have fought in the past wars giving life, limb and all the sacrifices for us to live in Freedom and go about our day without fear.

On September 11, 2001, that comfort, that feeling of living in a land that would not be attacked ended.

William T. Sherman said it succinctly, "War is hell."

The day has come for this Nation and its people to understand that there is a risk in losing its freedom, and in reality there always has been. We have ONLY stayed free because of the sacrifices of our military, our warriors.

This is about saving the future of America. Aristotle said, "We make war that we may live in peace."

We are seeing the American Flag flying at homes now more than ever in my lifetime. We are seeing the American Flag flying on vehicles and people wearing Flag pins and small Flags on their clothes. America is united in the cause for Freedom and for our country to WIN against the evil that came upon our land to kill and hurt us. To change our way of life and to destroy America which is US, you and me. To take away our precious Freedom.

This is the Freeper version of the USO Canteen. Where soldiers could come and feel a small part of being at home. It is a place where you that have family in the military can post a thought to a loved one that might be able to read it far away from home. A place where we that support our military can help support them, post to them, fun graphics showing the price in America and our troops. Poems, quotes, cartoons, or articles of how America is behind our troops.

Those in our military are our Nation's warriors. Let us join hands, fly our Flag and let the world know how important our warriors are to us....And that our MILITARY, our Warriors, are America's TRUE HEROS!

"No Marine was ever honored for what they received. Honor was the reward for what they gave." (Anonymous) CHIEF gave his all in many ways. He touched our lives and his friendship meant so much to all of us. He will live in our hearts forever, and his friendship will always be a bright and shining memory in our hearts and souls.

"What is a PATRIOT?"

PATRIOTS are not "Revolutionaries" trying to overthrow the government of the United States.

PATRIOTS are "Counter-Revolutionaries" trying to prevent the government of the United States from overthrowing the Constitution of the United States. - Unknown Author

Thanks for that definition of Patriot!

Oh, I wanted to share a "Dear Abby" story I read this morning......

DEAR ABBY: Your "Pennies from Heaven" stories have been delightful. I have one that does not involve money, but the result was just as heartwarming.
The year was 1945. I was a member of General Patton's army, fighting our way across Europe. Infantry combat is pure hell, so when there was a rare lull in the fighting, an orchestra from our division band was brought in to cheer us up. In a wooded glade somewhere in France, they played all the favorites of the day, and we were reminded again of what we were fighting for.
A soldier with a clear, sweet voice began singing "Pennies From Heaven." However, it wasn't the familiar version. These satirical lyrics told the story of a GI coming home to his wife after serving overseas, and being met by his beloved, holding a brand-new baby girl named "Penny."
The refrain of that song I'll never forget. "Every time he asked, she'd say, "Penny's from Heaven." There were many verses, and the soldier sang each one with a straight face. At another time under different circumstances, we probably would have found the song mildly amusing. That day it was the funniest song my buddies and I had ever heard. No money changed hands that day, but the laughter was a gift from God at a time when we had very little to laugh about.--WALLACE HARMON, DALLAS

When Bob Hope came over to Nam in '66, his team did the same for us. We talked about his show for months.

Why didn't you ever send me a picture and information to include in the Veteran's Special? You still can, you know. I have a few more, and I'm going to make another group.

Iowa Granny's breakfasts are the best. I hope she made grits. I brought a rich, moist sour cream coffee cake, loaded with cinnamon and walnuts - kind of a "dessert" after the main course of bacon and eggs. More coffee!!!

Mornin' Billie. Where's Narcissus - oops, I mean Louie - this morning.

Hey Narcissus, if you can tear yourself away from the mirror for a while, join us in the Canteen.

From an Anonymous Gnomie

At the Pentagon, the majority of our networks are back online. This Herculean effort has gone on since 9/11 even as the building was still burning out of control. Civilians, Military, Contractors and Volunteers have stood together in a relentless effort with dogged determination that this monolithic structure and symbol of America's mightiest tool of defense would not fall victim to barbaric acts of cowardice and terrorism. Hundreds of servers, network devices, and PC's were brought out of extremely hazardous areas at great personal risk. Unlike the situation with the WTC, we don't get to rebuild from the ground up. Somehow we have to find new physical pathways around structural impediments while maintaining a logical structure that points the end user's terminal back to its original home servers and network groups. Our network engineers have performed miracles.

Mind that this infrastructure is not new and shiny; it's a hodgepodge of every imaginable type of networking you can think of all meshed together for the last fifty some odd years. A FDDI ring becomes a FastE VLAN. 100MBit pipes magically transform into GigE pipes. One cannot even conceive of the complexity of these problems and issues. Our cable technicians have been yanked around the building, stringing CAT V cable, fiber etc. Called first to go one way and as we discover a better routing point hauled off in a different direction. I personally owe these men and women a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid. They have had to endure the seemingly fickle nature of our engineers as they have tried their best to put wire to the wallplate.

I wanted to get it on record someplace before we slip away into history as a footnote that not all the heroic efforts are shown on the news. Many of the heroes are behind the scenes.
