NEW YORK — It may be the most popular thing on television these days, and has nothing to do with eating grubs or neurotic singles.

It's The Rummy Show, live from the Pentagon nearly every day.

Quick-witted and acid-tongued, refreshingly straightforward yet not really saying that much, Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld seemed like no one's idea of a television star until the U.S. began its airstrikes in Afghanistan.

I saw that last night on Fox, at the end of Special Edition. Must have laughed for five minutes.

I love him too, but the first person I ever heard use the alligator quote in a political context was RWR when discussing budget the role of the federal government.

From yesterday's briefing:

Q: Mr. Secretary, over the weekend there were some Northern Alliance people -- (inaudible) -- Pakistan who were suggesting that if Mullah Mohammed Omar were captured, that he might end up being freed. Would you -- what will be your reaction, if that should ever happen?

Rumsfeld: Well, you know, there are so many people in the world who can opine on these things. Some are on the ground, some aren't. And anyone can have an opinion about anything. I can't imagine why he would be freed, or by whom. Nor can I imagine that he'll end up being captured. From everything I've read about him, he's a rather determined, dead-ender type -- (laughter) -- and -- to coin a phrase. And I just -- you know, it could happen, he could be captured. Everyone has an opportunity to surrender. Nobody wants to kill somebody who's surrendering. But he just doesn't feel to me like the surrendering type. (laughter)

I hope Rumsfeld's treatment of the press will raise their standards. Maybe they'll all start asking better questions to avoid being skewered by Rumsfeld. Maybe they'll start trying to come up with the best question to stump him. Maybe all other public figures will start to learn from Rumsfeld; that they can manipulate the press in to asking better questions by refusing to answer or criticizing the stupid questions.

Saw a reporter on Fox over the weekend, who said he'd had a chance to talk to Rummy post-SNL.

According to the reporter (and I must paraphrase)

Rummy (with a grin): Am I really that mean?

Reporter: Do we really ask that many stupid questions?

Rummy: Wellllll... sometimes.

I cracked up.

Don't forget who were talking about.

These are the same folks who, when the last President said it all "depended on the meaning of 'is'," started going "oh, wow, how brilliant, how insightful," etc.

I'm not holding my breath.

This is good news. Not new news, but reaffirming nonetheless. It is just so grand, really, to have men in charge who do not waffle, make nicey-poo, lie, distort and evade the questions thrown their way. Of course they are NOT going to put the troops in danger by giving out information to early, and of course they are going to slam down stupid questions or statements. This is how grown-ups act. Rummy is elevating the press and they don't even know it-yet. (Helen Thomas, take note, Ari has been WAY to nice to you and your pathetic, innuendo laden, creepy questions so loaded with your yearning for the hick from Arkansas.)

I love the big Rum. Rummy encourages my pride in our American military to grow and flourish. What a good man, in the right place at the right time. Thank you President Bush!

"They are being used on front-line Al Qaeda and Taliban troops to try to kill them, is why we're using them, to be perfectly blunt."

*This* is why I love this guy! Honest, tough and unabashedly baring a killer instinct against those who have killed a number of us and would like to kill even more of us.

No talk of "degrading their war-making capabilities" and other such touchy-feely crap. This is a real *guy* whose primary concern killing the enemy, and he isn't afraid to show it.

In other words, an individual who understands that the primary role of the military is to kill people and break things - not an armed "meals on wheels."

I agree with you 100%. Amen!

Dittos all.

Paraphrasing just doesn't do him justice, but I loved it when, early on, some press egit asked him an operations question, Rummy pauses and explains why he cannot answer, egit follows with, "why did you pause?" and Rummy trumps with, "I've always found it a good idea to think before I allow words to come out of my mouth."

Can't believe I have a crush on a 68-year-old man!

Listening to that *itch Helen Thomas right now, I can only ask, didn't she retire?

LOL. How true! This man is so hot. I guess I never knew how much we, at least moi, were missing 'MANLY' men. Hehe. Conservative men are just the BEST! Real men! All the time!!! Ya gotta love that after our heavy PC indoctrination, from the lesbians of NOW (who hate real men) and other special perverted interest groups, where so many men seemed to be running around afraid of their own shadows. Conservatism is FREEDOM to BE WHAT YOU ARE! Thank goodness. And VIVA La DIFFERANCE!

No, she quit in a huff when her employer was bought by a non-leftie. She quickly re-upped with an ideologically-correct news outlet.

Bet she and Mary McGrory get together every Saturday to exchange beauty secrets.

If the reference eludes, McGrory is another tight-faced, incredibly nasty *itch who claims to be a journalist (for the Post). M. Dowd should take a lesson from those two prunes and try to warm her cold-hearted, anti-anything Bush pen. When she worked for the Evening Star, Dowd even took her hatchet out against my Dad, who was a well-respected real Republican in what is now the People's Republic of Montgomery County, MD.
