Phyllis Schlafly: Are Mexican Immigrants Assimilating Or Invading?
Too Good Reports ^ | December 2, 2001 | Phyllis Schlafly

Posted on 11/30/2001 7:47:46 AM PST by Stand Watch Listen

Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, support for the United States has poured in from around the world, but the response from Mexico has been decidedly lukewarm. A Gallup poll reported that 78 percent of Mexicans oppose contributing troops to a multinational coalition, and we have seen no indication that Mexico will modify its oil policy of acting like a member of OPEC.

While there is no evidence that the 9/11 terrorists entered over the Mexican border, the trial in El Paso of an Iraqi smuggler produced evidence that he alone brought more than 1,000 Middle East illegals into the United States via that route, charging his clients $10,000 to $15,000 each. Border Patrol agents have confirmed the increase in illegal aliens coming from the Middle East across our southern border and the fact that Arabs pay up to $50,000 each for a "coyote" to smuggle them into the United States.

The 9/11 events have temporarily shelved the foolish proposals to grant amnesty to three million Mexicans illegally living in our country. Unfortunately, there is no indication that Mexico has retreated from its longtime goal of opening the U.S. border.

In Chicago on July 27, 1997, then Mexican President Ernesto Zedilla told the National Council of LaRaza, "I have proudly affirmed that the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders." He announced a Mexican constitutional amendment that purports to allow Mexicans to retain their Mexican nationality even though they become U.S. citizens (which is contrary to the U.S. naturalization oath).

When President Vicente Fox came to the United States this year, he reiterated this line, proclaiming that "the Mexican nation extends beyond the territory enclosed by its borders" and includes migrants living in the United States. He called for open borders and endorsed Mexico's new dual citizenship law.

Some Mexicans use the term "reconquista," which is Spanish for reconquest, to describe their desire to see California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas acquired by Mexico and named the new country of Aztlan. They are teaching their youth that the United States "stole" those areas from Mexico and that they should be "returned."

The United States acquired the Southwest a century and a half ago in three ways: part by the 1845 annexation agreement with Texas, which was then an independent republic, part ceded by Mexico in the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after the Mexican-American War, and part by the 1852 Gadsden Purchase.

Mexico's claim to the Southwest originated with the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas, which drew an imaginary line on the map to divide the Western Hemisphere between Spain and Portugal. Because geography had so many unknowns at that time, Portugal got only Brazil (which is why Brazilians speak Portuguese).

Other countries never recognized this treaty, and Americans consider it ridiculous even to talk about giving the Southwest to Mexico. Most national borders all over the world have come about as the result of war.

Mexicans obviously have no thought of invading the Southwest with troops, so their hope is reconquista by migration, both legal and illegal. According to Mario Obledo, founder of the Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund, "California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn't like it should leave."

An amnesty rally in the Los Angeles Sports Arena on June 10, 2000 attracted 25,000 people. In demanding amnesty for illegal Mexican aliens, the speakers proudly announced the names of at least a dozen unions in Los Angeles that are now headed by Mexicans.

Vicente Fox presented Mexico's Congress with a five-year development plan to eliminate the U.S.-Mexican border. He said he plans to serve "the 100 million Mexicans who now live in Mexico and the more than 18 million who live abroad," and to "strengthen our ability to protect and defend the rights of all Mexicans abroad."

Juan Hernandez, appointed by Fox as special liaison to Mexicans abroad, lobbies to get U.S. driver's licenses issued to illegal aliens and defends the Mexican government's issuance of desert survival kits to those sneaking across the border. On ABC's Nightline on June 7, he boasted: "We are betting that the Mexican-American population in the United States ... will think Mexico first."

Fox's five-year plan calls for building a larger consular presence in the United States, and this is already in operation. In U.S. areas with large Hispanic (including illegal) populations, the Mexican consul donates to the local public schools the same textbooks that are used in every elementary school in Mexico, grades 1 through 6.

The books, written in Spanish and including all academic subjects, teach that America "stole" the southwest from Mexico and that Mexico is entitled to take it back. The Mexican government considers these textbooks a symbol of Mexican national pride, guarantees a set to every Mexican child, and makes it a crime for anyone to sell them.

The only reason we learned about this Mexican plan is that one school in Santa Ana, California, decided to sell the books at a book fair and the local Hispanics kicked up a fuss about it. The school apologized to the Hispanics for selling the books, but should have apologized to the students for accepting the books in the first place.

The question we should ask our Mexican immigrant friends is, are you assimilating or invading?

Travis - let it go. The kid was either on/off his med's or had been drinking or not thinking... Or, it could have been a simple case of penis envy.

We both wasted too much time, and peace of mind attempting to have a discussion. I accept his creditials - he fought his war. Every man fights his own wars - either in uniform or at the office - and none should diminish the history of another.

The kid was exactly correct in his position that the early story information indicated Americans were present at the scene of what could in fact have been a serious war crime.. But then, he stupidly walked into the clearing - attempting to say there was NEVER any acceptable scenario where "war crimes" must be seen in the light of situational ethics and the will to survive.

Frankly, I hope he cools down, takes that chip off his shoulder and comes back. I'll bet you're man enough to forgive - once.

Are these just the words of a few extremists?

Yes.

Those aren't my leaders. Those opinions don't represent my viewpoint. Should I go find quotes from Anglo politicians, professors, militia whackos and street people and then insist that they represent all Anglos?

Hispanics aren't some monolithic, cultural equivalent of the Borg coming to America to "out-reproduce" you and live on welfare. Shake yourself.

Is your faith and confidence in America and American ideals so fragile that you think we can't absorb immigrants without collapsing? Is this the end of America as we know it? Sure. It probably is. That doesn't mean it's the end of America or our Constitution or our way of life. America will be just fine. Relax.

OK, so you think they are able to be assimilated.

But what number would you think is too much, given the amount of support they will need to be assimilated for many years? 1 million, 10 million, 100 million, or do you think no limit at all?

And if no limit at all, why have any border? -- Is that your view?

You have power hungry, vote hogging democrats and greedy cheap labor big business republicans to thank for our current predicament.

How true, how sad, we're doomed if it's not stopped soon.

First, I'm not going to go into a detailed rant about the way the USA handles immigration policy. That's a rant for another day.

That said, I think we quickly forget how many decades it takes for an ethnic group to get assimilated. THe reason we've forgotten is because immigration between the 1920s and 1968 virtually ground to a halt, so we tend only to know of families who came to this country and assimilated decades ago or families who have only come very recently. German-Americans started coming here in droves in the mid to late 1800s and had German schools, German neighborhoods, and German churches. This likely would have gone on for a few more decades were it not for WWI which made expressions of German culture "unwise"-- not to mention the decades upon decades it's been since we've seen new communities of German s moving to the USA.

My father's side of the family came here in the early 1950s. His parents never really learned that much English, and at family holidays we still bounce back and forth between languages. English was learned as a second language for all of my cousins. However, now that my cousins have children (the second generation born in the USA-- 30 years after my cousins were born and 50 years after my father and his siblings came to the USA), THEY are the first generation to learn English as a first language-- decades after their grandparents first came to this country as children. You're not going to see fully "assimilated" Mexican families -- or any kind of family -- for at least 50 years after they first arrive here.

You say you've had "no hint of a problem" in Santa Ana. You probably haven't, since you're a hispanic male. Tustin is a different story altogether, nothing like Santa Ana.

I am a white older woman who lived for over twenty years in the city of Orange, also right next to Santa Ana, and I watched sadly as parts of my town turned to slum-like conditions because of the hordes of illegals living there, twenty to an apartment, cashing their welfare checks at the bank and using their food stamps at the markets. They drive with no auto insurance, and for the past ten years no one could leave their garage open without things being ripped off by Mexicans.

No racism here, my family is multicultural, but I'm sick and tired of my property taxes being used to build schools for millions of kids from Mexico, and I'm sick and tired of my state taxes being used to pay for their welfare and their beer, and I hate seeing California towns turning into slums. If you don't like my views, too bad.

Watch 75% of illegals go home if the freebies are stopped.

Usually I just like to cut, paste, highlight and repost their abusive remarks for attribution, to make sure everyone knows the caliber of punks they are dealing with.

Lately the Admin Moderators had seemed to have a policy of politely cleaning them up behind them, and that is what set me off, but Jim Rob cleared it up for me.

Check out post #96 and let me know when the last time was we saw these quotes in any mainstream newspaper or publicized by any national news service. That's the kind of truth I speak about...the virulent, assinine comments made by so-called Hispanic leaders. Yes, I am a betting man and as naive, self-absorbed and generally ignorant many Americans are at the moment, don't underestimate for one moment that that the resolve would not be there to end this march to national suicide should this issue really explode and we all get the truth.

Didn't stop you from finding them, though. What was your source?

Virulent, assinine comments are hardly unusual among so-called leaders of any race, creed, nationality or religious faith. The original article is ample evidence of that fact.

Hmm. Really? I grew up in Tustin right next door to Santa Ana and I've been working in Santa Ana for over two years now and I've never had so much as a hint of a problem. And yet another racist lie goes up in smoke. This is starting to get monotonous.
Usually the members of the pack don't experience problems, within the pack. I haven't seen any of your pandering arguments stand the Light. Racist! Blackbird.

Well friend, I have some of these comments on tape which I recorded from Glenn Spencers show so it's not heresay or fabricated. Sure is funny, I sure haven't seen comments like that from any members of Congress, Justice Dept., County commissioners, etc. Wanna bet if a white politician said for all Mexicans to go back to Mexico there might be a little backlash from all the little hate-speak police? Sure seems like we have a double standard when it comes to insensitive pronouncements in the media.

There are a couple of free community newspapers in my community which have had cover stories concluding that Filipinos are better educated than whites.

Oh reeeeeeaallllyyy??? LOL, I'd like to have a gander of that. And I wonder why some of our Filipino trained health care workers are watched by some State Boards....hhhmmmmm... thanks for the chuckle!

Not sure where you you get your twisted logic here but my point is those comments that I've verified were from some hi-profile Hispanics involved in politics as well as education. To keep it simple, "mainstream" referred to the fact that assinine comments like we've discussed are not reported on by large media outlets. The opposite would be true if such assinine comments came from white politicians. The hate-speech police would be out in force and everyone knows it for a fact.
