Ken, when I was a kid growing up in Chicago, there was a real Kosher Deli a long block away from my home. On the hot summer nights, all windows open, the smell of the wonderful old bakers preparing those fish dishes, would kill flies, ...LOLOL, but it made the atmosphere of those old neighborhoods what they were, and I do miss those days, and wouldn't trade any of the memories, for nothin!!...sigh!

but I'm Irish and well .. we don't know how to cook .. lolNot a chance, I got more than I bargained for with a chef I had at my 1st hotel roomservice job,............
Chef Kevin O'Shey!
I swear he could cook anything at a moments notice, that the most demanding patrons requested, without a blink of the eye, or any cookbook. I'd stack that man up against the most heralded fancy, foreign trained Chefs I have had since.

Chag Sameach.
BTW, does anyone have a recipe for some fantastic Jewish food made from beets and oranges? I'll trade it for one for corn cob jelly or apple pie, or even Tater Tot casserole -- I'll leave out the cheese so it will be Kosher.

Beets in Orange Sauce
(a nice sweet alternative to Tsimmes, very pretty on a table)
- 3 cans of beets, peeled and sliced
- 1/3 c. sugar
- 1 tbs cornstarch
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ c. beet juice
- ½ c. orange juice
- 1 tsp grated orange rind
- 1 tsp margarine
1) Combine sugar, corstarch and salt in a sauce pan with the beet juice, cook over medium heat stirring constanly until its thick.
2) Add the OJ, orange rind, margarine and beets mixing untill well coated.
3) Heat thoroughly and serve
