This is the trailer for the eagerly awaited Mel Gibson epic. Didn't see it posted before. The book is excellent -- but will the film be worthy?

I love Mel Gibson's movies (almost all of them). Does anyone know if he is a leftist militant off the screen, like so many other of the "stars"?

He is a conservative who has taught his seven children how to shoot!

From what I've been told. He's a staunch Catholic (hence the 7 children) whose dad left America in the 30s over the New Deal. He's no Ben Affleck or Tom Hanks if that's what you're looking for.

He's a traditionalist Catholic...attends the Tridentine (Latin) Mass exclusively.

Taken all together, Mel would make most of the people on this board look like Clintonistas!

Yeah I heard the Latin thing but I'd only got that from one place so I wasn't sure if it was true.

His father uprooted his entire family from NY in the 60's to keep his older sons from going to Viet Nam.
Mel was born in NY and once aspired to the priesthood.
Mel is a staunch conservative, I've read a lot about him and have seen him interviewed several times.

He's seriously Conservative and seriously pro-life. I like 'im. :) He and I are exactly the same age and have the same number of children (I'm pretty sure he has seven......).

Now........if only I had his looks, talent, money, etc., etc., etc..............

I highly recommend reading the book first. LTG Hal Moore's first hand account is a gripping read. You won't be able to put the book down. I hope the movie is loyal to the book.

Not even close, my man. Mel is a HARDCORE Catholic conservative although not at all politically active. He got in trouble a few years abck for deriding homosexuality during an interview in Spain. He offered to raise money for Pat Buchanan's 1992 run (but apparently Bay played it wrong and turned him off). He is probably Hollywood's only paleoconservative.

Not only is he not a leftist militant off screen; he is a devout, and I mean devout, Catholic. He had Mass said everyday on the set of Braveheart, and he does not believe in artifical birth control; how's that for being to the right?

And the best part of all is that he lives his life according to his beliefs, and rarely, if ever, talks about it. A doer he is; a windbag he ain't.

In my last two years in the Army, I got to personally know Sgt. Ernie Savage, of the "Lost Platoon," featured in "We Were Soldiers..." In fact, he autographed my copy.

I hope the movie does him justice...

Mel is a pro-lifer (go Mel!) who has been quoted as saying, "Feminists don't like me, and I don't like them!"

Mel is cool.

Yea, Hollywood really hates this guy. They can't crush him like they've done so many other conservatives because he is such a box office draw.

Man, having a 56K modem stinks when trying to see this. Took about an hour to download the upgrade to QuickTime. (After a broken connection.) I've been online for over half an hour waiting for the trailer to fully download to my PC. I'll have to sign on later to see the second half.

I am really, really happy that the VietNam war is finally, finally getting some cinematic treatment to tell this story.

I don't know if Mel is still a staunch Catholic, but I met his sister (or that's probably "one" of his sisters), and she was a staunch, staunch Catholic. (Boy, did he get all the looks! LOL)

When I said that I'd left the Catholic Church, she just rolled her eyes, looked up, and said, "Ah, another victim of Vatican II!" Definitely traditionalist since she insisted there were only a few places in the U.S. she could live due to the church problem.
