Happy 86th Birthday Frank Sinatra!
The Calendar | December 12th, 2001 | StoneColdGOP

Posted on 12/11/2001 11:00:36 PM PST by StoneColdGOP

"The kid's name is Sinatra. He considers himself the greatest vocalist in the business. No one's ever heard of him. He looks like a wet rag. But he says he's the greatest."

- Harry James, c. 1937

Yes Harry, he was and always will be the greatest. His was the music of the 20th Century, and when he died on May 14th, 1998, the century truly ended. Hoboken, New Jersey's most famous son, born December 12th, 1915 will always be a part of America's musical history, and will be in the hearts of those who were touched by his music.

He was 62 when I was born, and I was 21 when he left us. Not a likely candidate to become so rabid a fan, but I am glad it happened. Life is better for it, there's no soundtrack to accompany the ups and downs and events of your life quite like Frank Sinatra.

"I would like to be remembered as a man who had a wonderful time living life, a man who had good friends, fine family - and I don't think I could ask for anything more than that, actually."

Frank with the gal that got away, Ava Gardner
"I'm supposed to have a Ph.D. on the subject of women. But the truth is I've flunked more often than not. I'm very fond of women; I admire them. But, like all men, I don't understand them."

"I'm for anything that gets you through the night, be it prayer, tranquilizers, or a bottle of Jack Daniel's."

"May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine."

"We ain't actually figured out ourselves what we do up here, but it's fun, baby", at the Sands in Las Vegas - January 1960

"I'm not one of those complicated, mixed-up cats. I'm not lookin' for the secret to life or the answer to life. I just go on from day to day, takin' what comes."

"Once you're a friend, you're a friend for life"
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop

Nice tribute...

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught.
To say the things he truly feels;
And not the words of one who kneels.
The record shows
I took the blows -
And did it my way!

Ok everyone, what is your all time favorite Sinatra song? Tough question you say? Ya I know but give it a try. I like "A day in the life of a fool" and "Witchcraft". I think the Nelson Riddle arrangements are the best. What say you?

I saw him in Vegas in the late '80s, what a showman. I bribed the usher and had stage side seats for two of my friends, my sister, and brother in law. I thought it was the best show I have ever seen.

My favorite song would have to be 'Luck Be a Lady'.

Happy birthday Frank.

Favorite albums: "No One Cares", "In the Wee Small Hours", "Only the Lonely"

Favorite song: "One for My Baby"

It's quarter to three
There's no one in the place
Except you and me
So set 'em up, Joe
I got a little story you oughta know
We're drinkin' my friend to the end, of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby, and one more for the road

I got the routine
Put another nickel in the machine
Feelin' so bad, can't you make the music, easy and sad
I could tell you a lot, but you gotta be true to your code
Make it one for my baby, and one more for the road

You'd never know it, but buddy I'm a kind of poet
And I got a lot of things I'd like to say
And when I'm gloomy, won't you listen to me, till it's talked away

Well, that's how it goes
And Joe and I know you're gettin' anxious to close
But this torch that I've found, it's gotta be drowned
Or it soon might explode
So make it one for my baby, and one more for the road...

MY WAY

And now, the end is here
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and ev'ry highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing

And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
"Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way"

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels

The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!

Yes, it was my way

Nice tribute...thanks for remembering!

I've been a Sinatra fan since the early 60's, back when my folks used to play his records. I finally saw him in concert in 1993, at a state fair near Seattle. It was a gasser, baby!

Hard to pick just one favorite song, but I suppose it would have to be The Way You Look Tonight.

Thanks for sharing some memories!

I've been a Frank fan since '94 or so, when I was in high school, I just liked his music. It wasn't until another four years had passed (and a scant three months before he passed away) that I finally UNDERSTOOD it. I never met him, or saw him in concert, but it would have been the thrill of a lifetime.

Ah, the Chairman, long may he wave! It's still Sinatra's world and we're all just living in it. While I'm at it, how bout your picks for his best albums? Here's mine:
1) "A Swingin' Affair"-The Chairman in all his glory
2)"Come Dance With Me"-More swingin' brilliance
3)"Sinatra at the Sands"-Live at the peak of the Rat Pack days, and dig the monologues.
4)"Songs for Swingin' Lovers"-This album represents Sinatra in his greatest years, Nelson Riddle arrangements and The Voice at its peak
5)"Sinatra Christmas Album"-For my money, the best Christmas album ever

I'm usually not a big fan of much of the older music(think most of it is too sappy), but Sinatra was one of the all time greats.

And I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to be on the receiving end of his punches.

The week that Sinatra died, Clinton was in some deep, hot water, I can't remember what it was. I said to my husband, "The only thing that would knock this off the front page would be Sinatra Dying." I swear this is true. It was that week I decided that Clinton was truly the devil.

I really dig the big band arrangements but Frank could take lyrics and make them come alive! "Come fly with me" and "Summer Wind" are two more of my favorites.

Marvelous tribute StoneColdGOP! How's your bird? I'm a huge fan. Favorite all time song is Fly Me To The Moon. By the way if you didn't already know, Frank's favorite song to sing was One For My Baby. Here's a page of links for Sinatra and the Rat Pack. It hasn't been updated since 1999 so some of them may not work.

how bout your picks for his best albums?

Well, I have to categorize into two camps on this question, if I can remember them all:

Favorite happy, upbeat, "Got the World on a String" albums:

"Come Fly With Me"
"Songs for Swingin' Lovers"
"Ring-a-Ding-Ding!"
"It Might as Well be Swing"
"I've Got a Crush on You"
"Nice 'n' Easy"
"The Summit in Concert" (Frank, Dean, Sammy)

Favorite, depressing, torch song, sullen, "God I need to get drunk tonight" albums: (which everyone should own)

"She Shot Me Down"
"Everything Happens to Me"
"No One Cares"
"Where Are You?"
"In the Wee Small Hours"
"Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely"
And songs in this category that just need mention... In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning, One for My Baby, I'm a Fool to Want You, Drinking Again, Empty Tables, Forget to Remember, No One Ever Tells You, When No One Cares, Here's that Rainy Day, I'll Never Smile Again, This Was My Love, Stormy Weather...
