Great news!
Now it's time to ask how/why they went all the way to Afghanistan and back, and had to ditch only 30 miles from the field.
Gotta watch that gas guage just a leetle bit closer?

FANTASTIC!

Any ideas about how much water they went down in? After 6.5 feet, it's all academic.
Seriously, Indian Ocean, expect very deep.

Me too.

Now that they are reported safe, I was wondering about salvage prospects.

Primary Mission of the USS RUSSELL
The primary mission of USS RUSSELL (DDG 59) is to destroy enemy aircraft, missiles, submarines, surface ships, and land targets in order to prevent the employment of such forces against U.S. forces. RUSSELL will normally be assigned to a carrier battle group. She will bring significant capabilities to the battle force, carrying the latest technology in all areas of modern warfare.
The ship's combat system, better known as the "AEGIS" Combat system, is the backbone of our war fighting capability. It takes a total team effort, from every corner of the ship to fully employ our systems in combat.
The RUSSELL has been designed to defeat simultaneous attacks involving large numbers of enemy surface ships, submarines, aircraft, and missiles. Our mission is to fight, survive, win, and fight again!
