AIDS Activist Undergoes Liver Transplant Surgery
Houston Chronicle ^ | December 24, 2001

PITTSBURGH -- AIDS activist, author and playwright Larry Kramer underwent liver transplant surgery and was listed in serious condition Monday.

Kramer's doctors said his condition was improving and was about where it should be after the 12-hour surgery Friday.

Kramer, 66, spent seven months on the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center's waiting list. He moved to Pittsburgh in early November to wait for an organ to become available. While many transplant centers oppose the surgery for HIV-positive patients, UPMC's Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute has performed 10 liver transplants on HIV-positive patients since 1997. Eight of the patients have survived. Kramer's HIV has been relatively well controlled, but he suffered from end-stage liver failure caused by hepatitis B.

What amazes me is that I know someone with Hepatitis C who was denied a liver for that exact reason ---over age 60 and with a terminal disease. I guess it's different for AIDS activists.

And what's more ---with the person I know who was denied a liver, he found a research hospital doing adult living donors, got a piece of liver from his son and is now doing very well and is back to work.

Agree. We need to test and quarantine, and deny public monies to those who are receiving the "just recompense of their error, which is meet." And start using the term "innocent AIDS patient" for those who got it in a dentist's office, etc.

"...By the way, my dad is a liberal. Would you deny him a life-saving organ donation?..."

LOL!

You're one of those guys who has to take a poke or two in the nose before he gets mad enough to fight, aren't you?

OK... You know my policy, son... No Liberals.

BTW... If my father were a liberal I'd be ashamed to admit it publicly, even to complete strangers.

"...If you saw a car accident, would you ask if the passengers were liberals BEFORE you saved their lives?..."

I'm no medic. I'm not qualified to deal with life-threatening trauma. And I'm no young fool, full of piss and vinegar, either. I'm sure as Hell not game for a lawsuit as a reward for trying to help you, and botching the job.

And please don't betray an ignorance of how this world works by telling me that a 'Good Samaritan' law will protect me...

No... On second thought, if you believe that, DO speak up. (I've got some property down in Florida that I'd like to show you when the tide's out)

If I see a bad wreck, I'll get on the horn, and I'll call 911. If I haven't got a phone with me, I'll make a call from the next land line I encounter. I'll even spot the quarter if it takes one.

Which beats simply ignoring the situation by a country mile.

Which organ will fail next and have to be replaced as his AIDS progresses?

Colon?

LOL!!!!

Priceless answer! Two snaps up in a circle for you!

May I suggest we send the lucky organ recipient a veritable shower of condoms, as they have done to the Priests at St. Patricks' Cathedral in NYC?

Kramer's HIV has been relatively well controlled, but he suffered from end-stage liver failure caused by hepatitis B.

All of you have been ignoring this little detail. The reason his own liver is failing is that he has Hepatitis B.

This new donor liver by being implanted in this degenerate will become infected by Hep B and start to die. This transplant is totally immoral for this reason alone.

This mans life is being extended because of who he is, not because he is the best candidate for a very expensive transplant and a healthy donor organ in short supply.

Years ago I had a supervisor who craved a '100%' contribution rate from his subordinates. My refusal to cooperate landed me in his office, where I had the pleasure of refusing him to his face.

Gid he get a kickback?

I always hated that 100% BS in the military...it never happened because I refused.

Here's an obituary published today (12-25-01) at Newsday.com. What is the connection between homosexuals and hepatitus, and what is the difference between hep B and hep C? Apparently, this Lance Loud didn't get a liver, or a new liver would not have helped.

Lance Loud

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lance Loud, a freelance journalist whose family was the subject of a television documentary series, died Saturday of complications from hepatitis C. He was 50.

He was part of "An American Family," the PBS series that was one of the first unscripted programs on mainstream television. The show focused on the family, who allowed filming of their daily lives for seven months in 1971. The 12-part series aired in 1973 and was considered a hit.

When he was 20 years old, Loud announced he was gay on the show, a public avowal that was unusual during the early 1970s. His decision drew widespread support from many gays.

After the series aired, Loud lived in New York for several years and performed in a rock band called the Mumps.

In 1981, he moved back to California, where he studied journalism. He often wrote articles for the Advocate, Details and Interview. He also had a few small television and film roles.

Whenever "An American Family" was rebroadcast, Lance returned to the spotlight. A one-hour sequel, "An American Family Revisited: The Louds 10 Years Later," appeared on HBO in 1983.

"What is the connection between homosexuals and hepatitus"

Homosexual men are virtual disease incubators, whether they have AIDS or not. They also seem to all have emotional problems.

They claim that homosexuality is genetic instead of a voluntary choice, because on one would ever choose the problems associated with being gay. But then they expend tremendous efforts to recruit young men and to force the acceptance of homosexuality.

They claim that homosexuality is genetic instead of a voluntary choice....

Yeah, I never understood that claim - - it doesn't make sense on the face of it. How would such genes get passed on, if you get my drift? Also, how would such genes come to be in the first place and wouldn't there be a natural diminishing effect leading to the eventual extinction of homosexuals?

When I was in high school many years ago, the science teacher, coach Johnson, said that about the only thing he knew about genetics was that if your parents didn't have any children, then you probably won't either. But we now know that if your parents were lesbians that you will probably be a lesbian also.

"...And risk saving the life of a liberal?..."

LOL!

Nice try, but no cigar.

1) You can't leave the streets clogged with wreckage.

2) My call will merely be one of several.

3) It won't be my finger plugging any liberal's severed artery.

"...Gid he get a kickback?..."

It's hard to say.

My guess would be that the UW is way too tight-fisted to pony up any 'back-atcha' cash.

He probably got the word, from above, that the company wanted to present this sort of image, with an unspoken threat or promise regarding how his 'performance' would affect his career.

The company I'm referring to here was prone to get involved in this sort of public relations eyewash BS, in several different forms, over the course of any given year.

They would stage an annual charity spectacle every year where virtually every employee was expected to 'volunteer' to go wipe the butts of the poor, teach treefrogs to masturbate correctly or perform some other vital public service.

I don't know how any of these events ever turned out, first hand... I always burned a vacation day instead.

"...P.S. Please be sure not to benefit from any medical advances developed by liberals. After all, you would not lift a finger to save their lives. I would not want you to be a hypocrite..."

LOL!

Who cares what you think, sport? Not I.

I'll take what can be had to take from a liberal without the slightest compunction.

Enemies are to be used, not respected or given fair treatment.
