Yarddog, well, to each their own. Come on down to SoFlo and experience "La Vida Loca" for a few days, you won't even remember "The Bleached One" when you're done. South Beach or even Pompano might work for starters. Just not Hollywood Beach, this time of year it's full of elderly French Canadians in tangas.

Knew a Hispanic Catholic Priest who used to cackle like hell whenever we passed that Mexican-American Restaurant ----Chi Chi's.

His explanation was exactly as above. Hispanic for TaTa's. And makes one wonder what these restauranteurs are selling to the Hispanic American community.

LOL! Everytime I go by a Chi-Chi's I have the same reaction to the name (and I snicker when someone talks about the Grand Tetons, too).

A better question is: What is Chi-chi's selling to the non-Hispanic community (I don't think many Hispanics consider Chi-Chis to be authentic Mexican food)? As my hubby and I call it, "faux Mexican food," or what people who have never had real Mexican food think is Mexican food (like Olive Garden is really Italian and Red Lobster is a real seafood restaurant)--my in-laws like Chi-Chis. OTOH, on Christmas Eve, they complained that the taco-seasoned Kraft grated cheese in the taco salad dip was so hot.

I was so happy when our Mexican neighbors brought over some tamales (fresh out of the steamer) on Christmas Day. That's the real stuff. Needless to say, we snarked them down with glee.

My folks have been in Florida since at least 1790, although I have never been South of Haines City.

Frankly that area is not my cup of tea. I do agree the girl is pretty. I don't care a hoot about Britney either although there is something about her which strikes me as pretty sexy.

I used to work with a girl who is probably prettier than either and resembles Britney a great deal. If I knew how to post pictures I would post one of her.

Padre Amezcua, the Priest, didn't think much of TexMex either.

Also, when in Germany we were neighbors to an exec in a large German Pharmaceutical firm who had just finished a tour in Mexico. He was totally derisive of TexMex when it was called Mexican food. He'd lived in Mexico City and said TexMex and Mexican were two different worlds.

Of course, he was German, and LOVED being superior.

Which reminds me of the old joke about the German/Chinese restaurant..... .......

I don't like Chi-Chis, but I do like Chilis. I also don't like Olive Garden, but I like Macaroni Grill. Sure, it is not "authentic" ethnic food, or whatever, but it tastes good, the atmosphere is casual and fun, and the price is affordable. OK, that's the end of the commercial :-)
