Led Zepplin is STILL one of my favorite bands to listen to before I do something intense...like play in a golf tournament... big f'in meeting with the big dogs. Zepplin is (to me) the ultimate rock band. Jimmy Page certainly is one of the top 5 guitarists in the world. Happy BD Jimmy.. you stud.

They used to be my favorite group. I remember watching 'The Song Remains the Same' in a theater, and when they show Page at his mansion, his eyes lit up red...I remember thinking of SATAN!!!

Imagine my surprise when I found out he bought Alistair Crowley's house, the famous Satanist!

It is sort of depressing to realize that Jimmy Page is now 58 years old. Hell, if Elvis was still alive, he'd be 67 years old. Led Zeppelin was my favorite band as a teenager. It was the soundtrack of my adolescence. In Through The Out Door, their last true album, is my personal favorite. It also marked the end of my childhood as it was the number one album in the country the day I joined the Marine Corps.

James Patrick Page - my Lord and Saviour in HS.

While other kids in HS could name all of the elements in the periodic table, I could name each LZ song in order from album to album.

On the two-disc set of 'The Song Remains the Same,' during 'No Quarter', Page is executing one of the most mind-blowing riffs ever, and at the same time Plant is doing vocals, John Paul Jones is all over the keyboard, and John Bonham is going nuts on the drums, and it all fits together perfectly.

And the concerts during which it was filmed are described as a 'mediocre' performance... hoooofah!!!

Yes, Page is definitely one of the 5 best guitarists ever, and Zeppelin is one of the 5 best bands ever.

"No Quarter" was originally recorded in C# minor, but on TSRTS, they play it in D minor. My theory? JPJ had to deal with less black keys (Page really rips it up on that one).

Actually I don't think Bonham was in that last photo I posted with Page and Plant. Must be a roadie or something.

But here's a picture of all four of them just as they were hitting it big.

Yes, I stand corrected. It was Peter Grant, the manager of Led Zeppelin. Not John Bonham. Not "some roadie." Shame on me for not remembering the man who made Led Zeppelin possible.

BTW, I took John Bonham's death in 1980 harder than John Lennon's death later on that same year.

One of my pals listens to jazz records made before the 1930s only. After 1930, he says, the idea of a solo took hold and the music hasn't sounded the same (This is actually not an isolated opinion.) I believe something similar took place in rock around 1967.

In any event, Happy Birthday to Jimmy Page, if not for anything else, then for the guitar work on the first Kinks sessions!

I meant Robert Plant about two months after I moved to Perth in 1983. My wife and I were going to see him in concert that night, and parked the car early at the arena before going to get a bite to eat. As we were walking behind the arena, we could hear the band going through the sound check. Just then, a non-descript sedan pulled up next to us, and out popped Robert Plant.

Here was one of my rock gods, and I was stammering like an idiot while the missus was cool as a cucumber. He spent quite a few minutes talking to us, and was very friendly. I didn't wash my right hand for a week, LOL!

You know that picture was from the 1970s. When was the last time a superstar rock band got a dressing room with metal folding chairs? It looks like they were doing a concert for a church raffle or someting.

Guess I should read all the posts before I respond! Oh well. :-)

I also remember where I was when I learned of Bonzo's death and, like you, it meant far more to me than Lennon's.

About eight years ago I was in a room with a crowd of 'utes while Zeppelin played on the radio. One of them made some comment about Led Zeppelin being a great guitarist. I couldn't resist informing her that Led Zeppelin was a band and naming all the members. After getting the "OK Mr Know-It-All, how do you know that?" look I happened to mention seeing Led Zep live. At that point the looks changed to those of awe -- somewhat akin to those we might give to a surviving veteran of Gettysburg. I realized then and there that I wasn't young anymore.

Those sound like the same people who would probably think Pink Floyd is a person too. Which one's Pink?

Pink Floyd was another of my favorite bands growing up. But they should have retired in 1980 like Led Zeppelin. They've hung around far too long!

Ugg, sorry. Jimmy Page is one of my least favorite guitarists. His licks don't have the the presence of the sources he ripped 'em from, and then there's that decade of hair metal he's chiefly responsible for.

That's not Bonzo with Page and Plant..........that's their manager (at the time), Peter Grant. He was a pushy, bullying, loudmouthed a**hole..............and one HELL of a manager. He got them deals that other bands could only dream about. Died some years ago.

While I wont try to change your mind I can only question the knowledge you have of Jimmy. Yes he started by ripping off blues guitars players but his original compositions are really where Jimmy Shines. If you ever change you mind take a good listen to Physical Grafitti and you will see what I mean.

Anyway it isnt a rip on you and this is a tribute to Jimmy thread anyway.
