A FORMER stripper elected as mayor of a small Colorado town is fighting an attempt to remove her from office by residents upset by her efforts to quicken the pace of life in their sleepy community.
Koleen Brooks, 37, a hairdresser and one-time topless dancer, wants to encourage more development in Georgetown, which has a population of 1,100. But the real dispute has been less over her policies than her manner of conducting herself in office. Many residents are unimpressed by the blinking red and green Christmas lights in her navel, a disputed incident of breast-flashing in a local bar and an investigation into allegations that she wanted a hit on one of the town’s two policemen.
Miss Brooks, who spent four years stripping in Shotgun Willie’s saloon in Denver when she was younger, won election last year on a platform of “parties for all” and allowing wider latitude to development in the Victorian town. She has been criticised for her inability to conduct town hall meetings and has explained that she has short-term memory loss after a motorcycle accident. She began to receive national attention after claims that she bared her breasts in a crowded bar, something she has admitted and denied in turn.
She fell out with the two-man police department and announced that she wanted to abolish them. She was investigated over allegations that she had tried to recruit a thug to literally do that to one of the officers, Mark Dillard, or at least harm him. No charges have been brought.
Now a petition is being gathered to oust her by holding a re-run of the election. “We need to get on with business, there’s a lot of things we have to get done in town,” said Dexter Fountain, one of three residents who canvassed signatures.
Miss Brooks says she is being attacked by political enemies for trying to change the town, about 40 miles west of Denver. She believes that her critics want to turn the town into a retirement community
