Council for Government Reform and President Bush Agree: Social Security Reform Still a Domestic Prio

(Arlington, VA) – The Council for Government Reform (CGR) applauds President Bush for re-affirming his support for modernizing Social Security in his State of the Union Address, but reminds America that much work still lies ahead.

“In a time when domestic issues have taken a back-burner to our War on Terrorism, it is refreshing to hear that President Bush still believes in the American workers’ right to choose their retirement future,” said CGR President Charles Hardin.

CGR has long been committed to strengthening Social Security through the creation of voluntary personal retirement accounts (PRAs). They are still the most viable option on the table to provide ownership, inheritability, and a greater return on workers investments.

“The return of deficit spending has made the task more difficult, but not insurmountable. The President has called for a year of debate and CGR stands ready to lead the discussion. We will devote our resources to educating American workers, and more importantly – American voters, on the benefits of a voluntary system of PRAs.”

“This election year, CGR will travel across the country bringing our message of ownership, security and control to all Americans from the youngest workers to the oldest retirees. We hope that the President continues to provide his leadership and that Congress finally gets around to making the tough choices on how to fix the system,” concluded Hardin.

Since 1991, CGR has been a leader in the movement to modernize Social Security to include a voluntary system of PRAs. Backed by more than 550,000 supporters nationwide, CGR seeks a more responsible and limited government beginning with a sound and secure retirement for all Americans. Let's hope so. I don't think I owe anyone an income, regardless of how old they are.

They already have my retirement money, the gamble remains whether the program will remain functional when I reach their age.

I agree.... Just give me back all of the money I've put into the system, with compounded simi-annual interest from day one and I will be happy as a clam....
