Christopher Reeve, Super ex-pat?
With Ashley Pearson
MSNBC
Feb. 26 America might be losing its Superman. Christopher Reeve says he might move to England because the U.K. has been more aggressively pursuing stem cell research, which the actor believes may hold the cure to the neck injury which has left him largely paralyzed for seven years.
THE ACTOR HAS been in England, making the case for more stem cell research. He told BBC radio he is considering moving to Britain and will take part in early stages of research which has been restricted by U.S. lawmakers. I would go to the UK, Reeve said. I would go anywhere for therapy that is safe and could accomplish the goal of recovery.
Reeve also blasted pro-lifers who oppose stem cell research. Even if you believe that life begins at the moment of fertilization of a sperm and an egg, that is not required for this line of research, he said. Scientists do not need to use fertilized embryos, so I cannot understand what the objection is.

Maybe if were lucky he can talk Alec Baldwin, Ed Asner, Babs Streisand, Julia Roberts, Rosie O'Lesbo, and few other liberals into moving out of the country with him! Permanately!

"Fertilized embryos?"
Someone needs to give Superman a few lessons in human biology.

To: nickcarraway
Hope they find a medical breakthrough and have him wait 5 years for treatment.

I heard Feinstein mention unfertilized embryos on MTP on Sunday.Anyone know what she was talking about? As for Mr. Reeve humans embryos should not be sacrificed in order for him to walk again.

I suppose IF...I was in Mr. Reeves wheelchair......I very much so would consider finding some labs researching spinal cord injury using umbilical cord stem cells. No harm there, IMO.

Would you say the same if it was your son? May God give me the strength that I never use personal pain or injury to ones that I love as a license to do harm to others. I am certainly not as self-centered as these Hollywood craps!
To: linn37
There is no such thing as an "unfertilized embryo." An embryo, by definition, is created when a sperm fertilizes an egg.
I rather suspect (though I must admit that this is the first I've heard of this concept) this is a lie deliberately conceived by the death merchants in order to cloud the issue.

Would you say the same if it was your son? Is that what counts as an argument where you come from?

Scientists do not need to use fertilized embryos, so I cannot understand what the objection is. Actually, pro-lifers have come out strongly in favor of stem-cell research which does not result in the destruction of a human being.
Either Mr. Reeve is deeply confused, or he is lying about the nature of the research he favors, or he is lying about the reaction of the pro-lifers in order to discredit them.

I've learned something the disabled from Christopher Reeve. I've learned that a quadraplegic can be incredibly annoying.
To: nickcarraway
Hey Chris, outside of Superman, you were a bust!
When you leave for the UK, take that scumsucker, Robin Williams with you.

That is: I've learned something ABOUT the disabled . . . .

You guys are horrible. Are you saying if you were in the same position as him you would just sit in your wheelchair and wither away? At least he's trying to find a cure for not only himself, but others. You guys are so hateful and mean.

From what I understand, Bill Simon is the new Superman anyway. Go Simon! & Bye-bye Chris!
To: stuartcr
May God give me the strength that I never use personal pain or injury to ones that I love as a license to do harm to others. I wish to ammend that statement:
"May God give me the strength that I never use personal pain or injury to ones that I love as a license to do harm to the innocent.
That is more correct to me--because if someone murders or intentionally injures myself or the ones I love, I want justice for the guilty including the death penalty if warranted.
To: sonserae
Since the stem cells can be taken from the umbilical cord from live births you are the one who seems confused. Are you pro-life or not....???
Abortion is a bad enough issue we have to deal with on FR..but if you would use aborted tissues of humans to save your own life then shame on you.

If my son was quadriplegic, the acceptable options for treatment would be the same as for Reeve. Anything else would be hypocrisy. What I want to know is, why are you asking the question? It seems to be meant as an emotional appeal.

Are you saying if you were in the same position as him you would just sit in your wheelchair and wither away? I would far prefer that to creating some kind of 'life' for the sake of cannibalism.
I'm feeling a bit peckish, how's about I knock you on the head and eat your arm, I'll share--after all, it's for the good of myself and others...
I'm all in favor of stem cell research as long as no embryos are created--I think we are treading on dangerous ground then.

This thread should be pulled. I never saw such cruel remarks about a disabled person in my life.

I am amazed and a bit disheartened at the infantile attitudes and puerile callousness displayed on this thread.

Scientists do not need to use fertilized embryos, so I cannot understand what the objection is. An "unfertilized embryo" is oxymoron, just as "fertilized embryo" is redundant. I have not heard of any stem cell research using the unfertilized egg cells or sperm cells. Therefore he must be referring to adult stem cell research, in which case, he has no business criticizing the pro-life movement. No one has to die for adult stem cells thus I have never heard anyone who is pro-life object to the use of adult stem cells so I cannot understand what his objection is. I must conclude that he is a moron and, while I feel sorry for the English, they can have him.

The Great Debate Ping!
To: nickcarraway
What I find really amusing about this article is the implied threat. I guess Christopher Reeve thinks that we will all reconsider our oppostion when faced with the horrifying vision of our country without Christopher Reeve.
I mean, before breaking his neck, the guy's artistic high point was playing straight man to a strung-out Richard Pryor in "Superman III".
I think we'll get along OK without him.

There must be plenty of stem cells from aborted fetuses. I don't see why they should go to waste.
To: stanz
I never saw such cruel remarks about a disabled person in my life. Being disabled doesn't automatically make one above reproach, especially someone so selfish and self-centered that they look on humans as 'body-shops' to be killed and cannibalized.
To: Mortimer Snavely
Look, it's too bad that Christopher Reeve hurt himself. I'm sure no one is happy about that. What is annoying is his attitude -- and the attitude of some others -- that his disability gives him some kind of moral high ground from which to blast people who have strong beliefs about when life begins. Furthermore, he has his facts wrong.
To: stuartcr
Let's see...
I don't argue, I just make comments.
Why you sly devil! You aren't making a comment. You are asking a question. Or did you think we wouldn't notice?
And, I believe that your question is a sly way of trying to win an argument by asking questions, and letting your questions stand as surrogates for your arguments.
What would you do if it was your son?
I would hope that I would do the moral thing.
Or had you hoped that I would have said that I hoped that Christopher Reaves would be killed so my son could walk again.
To: stanz
This thread should be pulled. I never saw such cruel remarks about a disabled person in my life.
Ive never seen such a horribly patronizing comment in my life.
He has a fully functioning mind, and can be held accountable for his positions.
As annoying as he is, I really doubt he would appreciate your suggestion that we allow him to say anything he pleases because he rolls instead of walks.

Scientists do not need to use fertilized embryos, so I cannot understand what the objection is. There is no proscription against using stem cells from placentas, adult tissue, etc. that I am aware of. So, Mr. Reeve, your beef is?

Does your reverend or priest condone the kind of talk that I just read on this thread? I don't think so. This isn't a question of patriotism or selfishness. If you had no leg movement or arm movement, wouldn't you want a chance for recovery? You can call it patronizing or whatever the hell you want, but I would do the same thing. Show this thread to your clergyman, too.
