Media Hides from Simon Win

Wednesday, March 6, 2002

When I turned on the TV at 7AM this morning to hear the news, I thought the results of the California race governor’s race would be a lead news item -- perhaps, the second or third story after the War reports.

But no. I was had to flip quickly through the channels hoping to find something, but nothing on CNN, MSNBC, and then I clicked to the big networks.

Most of the networks were carrying the story about Condit’s loss. Fair enough.

But what about the upset win of political newcomer Bill Simon against presumed winner, former Los Angeles Mayor Dick Riordan, in the hotly contested Republican primary for governor?

Finally, both NBC and CBS ended their news reports, "And in another key race . . .,” mentioning, briefly, Simon’s win. CBS didn’t even bother to show a photo. NBC showed a soundless clip of Simon at his victory party last night. That was it.

The California’s race has been a national story for months now. The New York Times had even given it front-page coverage.
But, now that the race is settled and the result is clear, the big media would prefer to put this one behind us.
The fair headline from this story should be: "California Republicans Soundly Reject Liberal Candidate.”

But, I guarantee you will never see that on the cover of any major paper.

Had Riordan won, you can bet the covers of papers like the Times would have blazed: "California Republicans Reject Well-Financed Conservative, Want Party to Move Center.”
So, again we see another example of what Bernard Goldberg calls, "Bias.” Bias is not only slanting the news, but its downplaying stories that don’t fit the liberal agenda, and trumpeting those that do.

Despite the media blackout, the result of the California race is heartening.
It proves that the Reagan wing of the Republican Party still dominates. Republicans know that Simon will have a tough row ahead. But they also know it’s self-defeating to help elect a Republican like Riordan who makes no excuse for his liberal views and his support of Democratic candidates.

Last week, Mike Reagan and I were chatting about the California race.
Mike noted that not since his father left office in 1988 has there been any one to take the Reagan mantle and lead the party in California.
This may now be Mr. Simon’s role.

....I was disappointed in the little coverage Simon got last night myself. I thought maybe it was still to early (10PM).

....Silly me!

Having stayed up late last night to follow the results on FR, I was astounded to find Condit in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution but not a word about Simon.

Add the totals of the two Bills together (Bill Jones was also reasonably conservative but not as articulate as Simon) and you've got more than two-thirds of the vote. Riodan couldn't even break one-third in a three way race!

I'll give him credit for being fast to pledge his support to Bill Simon. Gray Davis has got to go.

Good observation ....

So tell your Congressman to DROP his NY times and Newseak subscriptions - They listen to this biased ABCNNBCBS 24 hours a day, 7 days a week the liberal views are being broadcast in to every Congeressman's offices across the country.

Is it any wonder that Congress begins sliding left under this pressure?

Tell them to at least change the channel to Fox News, and if they absolutely demand a Times and Post subscription, it's better be the Washington Times and NY Post.

Hey Hey, Ho Ho, PNG has GOT to GO! (Pencil necked geek - Davis)

In all fairness though, and I hate to do it, the Fresno Bee had the Simon victory on it's front page today. And they HATE conservatives. However, I am sure now that they will quickly revert to the tired old "Rats can do no wrong, Republicans can do no right" dogma.

I've been following the Simon campaign from North Carolina through e-mail updates, articles on FreeRepublic, and some of the comments made on the radio by Hugh Hewitt and Dennis Prager. The success of his campaign I believe came not from the help of the media, but from the groundswell of grassroot support. He also got help from his future opponent Gray Davis- who I believe 1) thought a solid conservative would be easier to tar and feather in November than a liberal Republican, and 2) seriously miscalculated the support Simon has.

Now the real challenge is ahead. Simon has been compared to Reagan a lot in the past week or so, and he's got a solid conservative vision. If he stays to his message, he's got a strong chance of beating Davis. I think Davis is scared now, given the very convincing win Simon had yesterday.

Didn't you see that coverage of Simon's win?

It was right after the update "Daschle Wrong - Bush had

updated Congress on Contingency Government /sarcasm off :-))

Davis spent $8million beating up Riordan in the hopes of having to run against Simon. We shall see if that strategy was another of Davis' failed plans for California.

Not bad, but we can do better: How tough would it be to convince our elected republican officials to join FR and post here occasionally. If the idea is to wean them from their media bias, an hour a day at FR would certainly seem to be potent medicine.

I was also surprised with his immediate pledge to support Bill Simon, and he seemed sincere with his statement! That's more than I can say about Bill Jones and his comment about Simons money. He came across as a sore loser! I expected better from him.

The biggest mistake the Republicans make is to try to win elections. If they TRY to win an election they put themselves in the box with the Democrats. If they run on the issues and maintain their beliefs and principle they win. If they start getting wishy-washy and pandering to the various interest groups they lose. Riordan tried to out-Davis Davis and it was so obvious that everybody wrote him off as a dishonest pol.

By the way, Riordan was the poster boy for the RNC and Bush. The Republicans are just as devious as the Dems if they take the route of pandering and trying to buy votes with gov't programs. Let the Dems have the ignorant and uninformed, the Pubs can win on the issues, but they can't trying to out-pander the Dems. Simon will win if he stays on message and forgets about trying to match Davis' largesse with tax money.

Well, to be quite honest, it's immaterial that the national news didn't pick up on the Simon win. And in fact, it's much to Simon's benefit if they keep quiet on it.

It's the big banner headline on the San Diego Union and the LA Times.
