It was morning in Los Angeles. We were working the day watch when my partner saw a man in a suit shouting at a brick wall in an alley. I parked the squad. Frank and I confronted the man in the suit.
"--and another thing! I kept the lights on in this alley! Got that?! I did! I deserve a round of applause--but no! You just stand there like a brick wall!"
Frank approached the man, "Sir, sir, step away from the wall--"
"This is worse than Vietnam! I'm in a bunker here, see? First, this wall just won't give me any respect! Now I've got you two shooting at me!"
I spoke up in an attempt to calm the man, "Sir, you look a little gray, a little overtaxed. Would you like to sit down? Would you like--"
Then he lunged at Frank, grabbing him by the shoulders, sweat pouring down his face, "I saved your friggin' department! They were shooting at me! I didn't have any friends!"
I called in for the boys from Sunnyvale, and after we had our gray, distressed man safely on his way to a nice long rest, Frank turned to me and said, "Does he despair because God does not exist and therefore he has no higher morality to which he may address his appeal?"
And I squinted at the bright ball the sun made rising over Daylight Donuts and replied, "No, Frank, he just skipped breakfast."
My partner grunted assent and the door bells jangled as the aroma of fresh-baked donuts displaced the raw fear of the alley.
I'm not sure that this is something Bill Simon would support.

You can bet that he will stand for only the highest level of decency. It's in his long term interest to do so. Character is the one asset he cannot afford to blow.
Yes he did. My only question: Was he pounding a typerwriter in an office with Al Gore? I can't imagine this putz commanding combat troops.
Davis' job as a member of the Signal Corps in Vietnam was to deliver radio equipment by helicopter to troops on the front lines. He said he "got caught up in rocket attacks" every few weeks, and the helicopter "was hit a few times." But more traumatic for the impressionable Davis was the fact that few of his frat brothers or law school classmates were in Vietnam. Even fewer were on the front lines.
"I was pretty naive growing up, and I just thought everyone did their duty. America was fighting a war, everyone kind of had to share the burden," Davis recalls. "The burden of this war fell disproportionately on minorities and whites who were less well-educated." He adds: "That's why I'm a Democrat."
He was awarded a Bronze Star for his year in Vietnam. The commendation noted his "initiative, zeal, sound judgment and devotion to duty" in the effort to rid Vietnam "of the Communist threat to its freedom." Wary that he may give his more liberal audiences the wrong impression, Davis now often calls the war "ill-conceived" and asks them not to "think I'm a hawk."
On February 24, 1996, three light aircraft left Miami on a routine flight. Their missions, to search the waters off the Florida Coast for rafters trying to reach the US shores, and bring them help by guiding the US Coast Guard to their location. That day in February, only one plane would return to its home base in Miami.

What a sleazeball. This should be Simon's pitch: Davis' plan of selling bonds to fund current needs means people who aren't even born yet will have to pay for this mess when they start working in 18 years.
How about something more positive, as long as people don't think someone named "Sanity" is running:

(or vice versa) He would need to combine it with a campaign for catchy, common sense solutions.
This idiot doesn't remember that Lyndon Johnson was the President from November, 1963 until January, 1969. Wasn't that when the draft levels were the highest? Also, wasn't Congress controlled by the Dems during that time period?

Inquiring minds want to know, can Davis be any more whiney and try any harder to paint himself as a victim? I think not!
I wonder how many of Davis troups contemplated fragging Davis over in Nam? I am not sure it is wise to use Nam analogies, but it is tempting.
