Frome the Augusta Chronicle 20 Mar 2002 (AP)
"The explanation from former NBA star Charles Barkley might be even more bizarre than his comments in Sports Illustrated accusing Augusta National of "blatant racism" against Tiger Woods for changing the golf course.
Barkley told the Las Vegas Review-Journal he made his Masters comments only to generate publicity for the article.
"I put the thing in there about Augusta to get everyone's attention, so it worked out perfectly," he said. "I liked the article, and it was a good, positive piece. But if I did a positive piece, nobody would care, and nobody would make it popular. My job was to get people to read the article so we could try to do something to help poor people."

Wow-- I wonder if CB ans SI knows what slander/libel are. My hunch is that AN will not pursue this any further at risk of bad publicity.
CB has proven himself to be just another Al Sharpton. Knowingly false accusations of racism do nothing to stop discrimination. Any child who understands the old story of 'The Boy who Cried Wolf' should be able to grasp this simple concept.

This is disappointing. Another celeb who can't be trusted no matter what his reasoning is!
Charles isn't my favorite sports star but sometimes he has a little wisdon but now it seems he doesn't have any common sense.

What a stupid, jerky thing to do. And to think I like this guy. Not any more...

My job was to get people to read the article so we could try to do something to help poor people.Gee, Chuck, you be sure to let us know when you've actually helped poor people by lying about others. Or will you lie about that, too?

Like dad always said, "Son money doesnt' buy class."
Never knew the true meaning of that till I spent the week with a rich uncle and his hoighty-toighty friends, country club and all.
All extremely rich, all unhappy, arrogant, badly dressed pricks. UGH!!! All I heard all week was nothing but complaing. How the ice cubes in their drinks were not the 'usual' shape, the putting greens were too fast, etc. etc., etc. I almost lost my mind with those jerks.
Most miserable bastards I have EVER run into. Totally bored with life.
