Early Report from the Pro-Israel Rally in NYC
cell phone call from RaceBannon | 4/7/02 | firebrand

Posted on 04/07/2002 10:34:34 AM PDT by firebrand

RaceBannon phoned in from the rally, which was moved to Dag Hammarskjold Park. It was just breaking up at about 12:15, although many people were still there and some of the speakers were still giving interviews. Race estimated 12,000 people.

Speakers were Congressman Engels, Senator Schumer, Andy Cuomo, Curtis Sliwa, Dove Hikind, Rabbi Golden, probably others.

By sheer coincidence, Race met up with newwahoo in the crowd.

The crowd was very polite, lots of families, psalms were sung in Hebrew, and even the booing was subdued---even when the New York Times was mentioned.

Next Sunday, the demonstration is said to be at 55th and Park at 10:30, where the PLO office is.

Yehuda, Race, and newwahoo I hope will correct any errors I've made here, or start a new thread.

The primary objective of Arafat's terrorist regime is not to establish the twenty-second Arab state, but to destroy the only western state. This was and remains the heart of the conflict. In 1948, the Arabs rejected an international resolution that would have established an Arab state, and instead attempted to destroy an embryonic Jewish state. Fifty-two years later, Arafat rejected a similar offer. Arafat publicly in Arabic demanded that Arabs rise and destroy Israel. With such a regime, whose ultimate objective is our destruction and which pursues this objective by the most barbaric means imaginable, there is no place for negotiations and no hope for reaching any sustainable peace agreement. Indeed, the much vaunted political solution to end the conflict was in fact attempted two years ago at Camp David, and it utterly failed. Arafat rejected a scandalously far-reaching Israeli offer of a sovereign Palestinian state in Judea, Samaria, and the Gaza Strip, which included half of Jerusalem, and instead chose to unleash the present war of terror against Israel. There is only one option that is now available to Israel: to decisively win the war that has been forced upon her. What is required of Israel today is not a willingness to clench her teeth and bear this ongoing violence, massacre after massacre.

Apparently, The Times recently referred to the Palestinians as "freedom fighters." I don't know where this was, in an op-ed piece or what. Again, don't take what I say as gospel. But that's what the booing was for. Race was talking to people at the rally and getting a lot of his information from them.

"Where was that useless bucket of fat (Nadler) encrusted guts?"

Now, wait just a minute, pardner! Just where do you get off suggesting that Jabba the Nadler has anything remotely resembling guts? You are referring to one of the sleaziest, slimiest, scum-sucking, bloated-arsed, gutless wonders to ever waddle through the halls of Congress. To suggest that Nadler has guts is wholely unfair and inaccurate.

I was at the rally with my husband and daughter, and just got back. The crowd consisted of a wide range of ages, across the religious spectrum. The police checked our jackets and didn't allow backpacks in. As I walked in with my daughter, I said to the police, "we don't use OUR children for violence," with a rueful grin.

The speakers mentioned planning a rally in D.C. within the next two weeks. Everyone from the eastern seaboard should be there! Plenty of busses will be arranged.

Are you suprised? I'm not. This is the same bolshevik American media which follows America hating cop hating slime like Al Sharpton around. Even when Sharpton or Jessie Jackson takes a crap the bolshevik media is right there crawling up their dirty rear ends. The bolshevik media never gives any publicity to good and decent people.

I would never have known there was a pro-Israel rally anywhere in the United States.

That is a positive. Bush is trying to erase American fingerprints from the USA giving Sharon the green light to take out the terrorists.

Last thing we needs is video of pro-Israel American demonstrations broadcast worldwide. A mob attacted our embassy in Bahrain last week. Very unusual for a country on our side (we have a naval base there) and whose air field we need. Pointless to incite even more trouble. We can support Israel without giving our enemies a weapon to use against us.

Supporting Israel IS NOT anti-Bush....

Giuliani visits Israel, avoids Palestinian areas...

'The New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani has visited scenes of suicide bombings in Jerusalem to show solidarity with Israelis but stayed well away from parts of Jerusalem inhabited mainly by Palestinians. Giuliani, who barred Palestinian President Yasser Arafat from a 1995 concert in New York with world leaders, said America felt a great kinship with the people of Israel and that suicide bombings since September 11 brought the two countries even closer.'

Okay, here it is:

As U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell departs to try to broker a cease-fire between the Israelis and Palestinians, over 10,000 peoplegathered outside U.N. headquarters in Manhattan to protest the Bush administration’s demand for Israel to withdraw from the West Bank.

As U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell departs to try to broker a cease-fire between the Israelis and the Palestinians, over 10,000 people demonstrated near the United Nations headquarters in Midtown in support of Israel Sunday.

Rabbis and elected officials who spoke blasted President George Bush's demand that Israeli troops withdraw from the West Bank and called on Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to ignore the president’s plea. Protestors at the passionate - though orderly - demonstration held up signs that called Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat a terrorist, as well is pictures of Israeli victims in the conflict.

“Telling Israel it has a right to fight terror but must withdraw before destroying the terrorist infrastructure is like America declaring it has the right to fight to fight terror but will, without delay withdraw from Afghanistan,” said Rabbi Avi Weiss of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale.

On Saturday, Bush called for Israeli forces to withdraw “without delay.” Delivering the message directly in a 20-minute phone call that aides described as tense, Bush told Sharon that the Israeli besiegement of West Banks towns must end for the American peace initiative to have a chance at success.

Sharon promised to “expedite” the operation, but he offered no deadline for a withdrawal, nor did Bush go so far as to push for an exact timeline.

Powell is leaving for the Middle East Sunday night as the administration seeks a greater role in ending the conflict. It is still unknown whether the secretary of state will meet with Arafat, but Powell says he hopes to.

“I would try to see the chairman, as I have in the past, as well as try to see other Palestinian leaders,” Powell said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday morning. “I have to be able to talk to all sides, otherwise you will never move forward into a cease-fire and into a political solution.”

A Palestinian cabinet secretary said Saturday that no Palestinian representatives will meet with Powell unless he visits Arafat at the compound in Ramallah where he has been surrounded by Israeli military forces for more than a week. That declaration came after President Bush criticized Arafat’s leadership in his remarks Saturday, suggesting that peace can be achieved without Arafat’s help.

Sunday’s pro-Israel rally in Manhattan was just the latest in a series of demonstrations in support of both the Israelis and Palestinians in New York City in recent weeks, though the numbers have been growing. On Saturday, about 1,000 pro-Palestinian protestors rallied at Brooklyn Borough Hall and then marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to City Hall.

I have no idea why the world media is beating up on Israel. Makes no sense to me.

My point is that while it is in American interests to help Israel root out terrorists, it is not in our interest to be tied anymore than we need be to what is occurring.

Netenyahu warned against it when he said it would be very bad for America's war on terror to be viewed as an Israeli/American war on Arabs.

We all saw what happened in Gitmo. We all saw the media accounts of American bombs killing civilians in Afghanistan. Do we need to be linked to the actions of the IDF?

You can be sure the media, most in Israel and those Democrats who smile in conservative faces at the pro-Israel rallies will be the first to pin any atrocity committed in the West Bank on America and Republicans.

Liberals have been playing this game for decades. Think conservatives would wake up someday.

Larry, you and I have been in agreement on many things here but I have to tell you-- that boat has already sailed, honey! No matter WHAT we do or don't do, we will be linked.

And frankly, the ratcheting up of protests and rhetoric in the ME sounds and smells awfully organized and purposeful. I know you know exactly what I'm talking about. At this point when people say "Don't piss off the Muslims" they might as well be saying "don't piss off the communists and anarchists who want our war on terror to fail and who are desperately trying to prevent us from expanding it". And I no longer care how mad either group gets. If there isn't a truth out there to enrage them, they'll invent & spread a lie to do the same. So we might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb.

I want them to see that they're going to face real opposition. They do tend to cave in the face of that.

Let them get mad at us for what we do to them, not what Israel does to them. That is my point. Israel today is ticking off our good ally Turkey because it doesn't like some comments which were made by Ecevit. That is the height of stupidity on Israeli's part. They should have let it slide. The comments were for domestic consumption and meaningless. But now that Israel is making a stink, what would have been forgotten in a day is becoming an issue.

I was standing near the speakers that were set up next to the street, at the rear of the front section!!

You must becoming Israeli by FRosmosis ("Q: how do say "front axle" in Hebrew? A: frent achxel - Q: how do you say "rear Axel" in Hebrew? A: "REAR frent achxel!") - how about some ref points - east, west? I was 30-40 meters west of the center, and the BOOING for the NY times and for FRANCE was NOT subdued (you have to stand with me next time Race, we can prime each other - We could have used your baritone on "BOYCOTT EUROPE NOW!"

I too heard some speakers pleading with Pres. Bush, and 1 or 2 chastising him. I also heard a thousand people bellowing "IDF, IDF, Finish the Job, Finish The job!" (completely but supremely coincidental that was one side of my hastily printed sign...). Powell and Annan were lambasted and booed. Engels was a surprisingly good speaker, and made a point of "Cqmgresspeople on BOTH sides of the aisle who support Israel, another bill to declare PLO terrorists..."

Nadler was squeaky, though it have been something about the explanation circulating through the crowd ("Who is Jerry Nadler?" "Who is Jerry NADLER? Where have you been . Nadler has never passed up a free meal or a chance to promote the clintons!"

There seemed to be a few hundred Kahanists in the far eastern part of the plaza (anyone there help out) who could be heard chanting "Give War a chance."

Two Israeli's recently finished with their compulsory IDF service (one, a "liaison" officer in Yesha) ; the young woman assured the crowd that Israel was extremely grateful for the turn out (with all the turn-coats and traitors bing interview on the lamestream media over the last weeks, they were probably VERY surprised to see this crowd) - the young man silenced the crowd with his difficult silence - it seemed he was experiencing deep emotions expressing his thoughts that we needed to understand that there was a long road ahead for us, and that it wasn't about the land, it was about, sorry, he used the values word. But those who stand with G-d knew that that was as close as he could come, and we were grateful - he heard that still small voice as he choked up, and it will stay with im and us forever...

A lot of "Am Yisrael Chai" (The People of Israel Live") ýȘ last version so stirring that 20 minutes after dispersal, a dozen Chabadniks were dancing to it on the corner of 47th and 2nd, under the watchful eye of the area commander: when I asked him how it ߘÓý was there a lot of counter-demo to deal with on first Ave., he smiled and looked at me - "You people out to protest more often - NEVER a problem!"...hmmm, sub-message from the leaders of the "NYC / We hate Hillary club" received LOUD AND CLEAR (note - forward to rest of Jews...)

I spoke/politely chastised camera and sound men from CBS and NBC, warning them that their staffs would be deported as soon as possible for their one-sided propaganda for the terrs (blather et, et al) and putting IDF at risk (Blamfield for lighting up the tanks running dark the other night, Fletcher for inciting sedition) - one of them sympathized with me, though he had the hubris to say, I understand, half the people here say we are doing a good job, the other not...'" BS - there could not have been that many undercover left-wing ers there, and if they were why would they blow cover, to get air time? Cameraman groupies? Schumer was surprisingly a weak speaker - Dov Heiken a fire breather as was Curtis Sliwa, but unfortunately he was so hot he was almost unintelligible, but he got the crowd VERY WARM! - When Cuomo came up (second to last) I was not the only one to shout out "Shame, turn your back on Cuomo" - some genius in a $500 coat glared at my NRA cap and the" islam does NOT mean peace" obverse of my sign and eye-rolled, "oh shut up; I replied in my most eloquent and politiest form, "No, YOU shut up! What's the matter with you - Cuomo is cut from the same cloth as the clintons,!" at which point the Mrs. $500 coat who normally lunches looked up at me with fire in her eyes, at least until I continued "And the clintons brought us OSLO, or have you already forgotten?!"

I am sure I am leaving some speakers and Rabbis out; one of the Rabbis were very stirring, especially Rabbi Gold (Gould?) at the end, who got the whole crowd in unison, "NO more lies!" - it made up for the fact that we didn't burn the plo flag and hang the arafascist in effigy.

I stood on a bench in the very middle after they called for everyone to exit west, so unless Race was ALREADY west of the middle, I tried and tried to look for the cap, I even shouted hoarsely a few times "Anyone from FreeRepublic?" but to no avail.

I hope that we will get more notice for the next one in Washington (there is another next week on Sunday opposite PLO headquarters, 65th and park, will fill in as soon as possible. A big bump to firebrand and others who started and bumped the thread! And a Yasher Koach / Well done, strength to you to those who could make it!

G-d Bless America, G-d Bless Israel, and G-d Bless, FR! Am Yisrael Chai°Ý(and next time, rally points!)

WCBS-TV just gave a pretty favorable report on the pro-Israel demo, followed by a quick, equally favorable report on the anti-Israel demo. The reporter, Whitney Casey, gave the numbers for each demo: 12,000/1200. If she showed any bias, it was in saying that in the anti-Israel demo, "More than 1200 Moslems, Christians, and Jews joined against Israeli violence," without giving a simlar intro for the pro-Israel demo.

I was at the anti-Israel demo Friday night; there couldn't have been more than 400 people there. I'm glad I wasn't in the city today; my ever-present backpack (full of newspapers and books) would have ensured that I couldn't enter. I'm sure glad you were able to make it, Race.

They are not monolithic. That is the problem. Muslims do work with us. You catch ABC tonight? We don't want a video of Americans rallying in support of Israel run after what ABC showed happening in the West Bank. The countries which we are depending upon for support will have a harder time with their own people if Americans are shown cheering the IDF.

Two nights ago the Bahrain Gulf Daily News ran a very unsual article blasting the USA. It was posted on FR. The next day, mobs attacked our Embassy there. That is unheard of for Bahrain. We need that Naval base there, we need their air field for our heavy transports. We don't need to incite the locals who, up to now, have been very supportive of our war on terror.

If we want to turn this into a USA vrs Muslim conflict (which is really what it is in many ways) we should do it on our terms, when we want to do that, when we are ready, not have it force upon us because we link ourselves too closely to what Israel does to protect herself.
