Now it's my turn to say that YOUR points are well taken. I defer to you, of course, on issues related to that area. The way you describe them, I can see why you would not want to live there. Seems like the town's leadership preeches but does nothing.

P.S. Your post reminded me of the problems faced by Pitssburgh. They are of different kind but have a similar result: the oldest population of a county outside Florida. Same behavior: the problem is constantly discussed but when it comes to action...

If it would not be betraying a family secret could you post the spiedi receipe. My Aunt married a man from Johnson City. I used to go visit them all of the time when I worked for GE. He apssed away a few years ago and I no longer work for GE. You can't get spiedi's in Texas.

Upstate New York continues to lose young people, while downstate continues to grow due to immigration and yuppies. The milking of upstate will only get worse.

The situation is worse in a place like West Virginia, which now has the oldest population in the United States. With excessive regulation and taxation, who wants to bring jobs there?

New York City, of course, is the great exception, as the financial service and media industry remains concentrated up there despite the heavy taxation and regulation. Once you get passed metro NYC, however, you come into areas whose best days have long passed them by.

But hey, at least Binghampton still has Suny-Harper College, probably the best university in the state system.

Now Binghamton University. My brother graduated from there a couple of years ago. And my uncle teaches there. And BU is the object of scorn among the 'residents' of the area. They HATE the college kids. They are trying to pass a law in Bighamton that will forbid more than 2 unrelated persons from living in a home or apartment.

Talk about an anti youth, anti college kid law. How many people after graduating college continued to live like one with several roommates to share expenses and the such? I didnt, but my brother did, my 3 college roommates did, and a lot of my college buddies did.

Small world. I have an aunt in West Corners; out Day Hollow and up the "hill". I also came south, and wound up 'right over the mountains' in east Tennessee...no income tax. (So far.)
