I'll wear a bag and hammer her regardless of her political I.Q. And.....I'll take sloppy seconds to that!

The rewards heaped on Ms Witt included a Soviet-built Lada in blue from the Stasi pool, thus jumping the 10-year waiting list for the cars (she later exchanged it for a red West German Volkswagen Golf); a flat; extensions to her parents' home; a holiday in Bulgaria and a passport enabling to her to travel to West Berlin followed. You can tell how bad things were in East Germany when a trip to communist Bulgaria was considered a treat.

I really don't understand what the big deal is. Katarina is right -- everything she is she is because of the East Germans' dedication to shining international examples that their system worked. Certainly, it worked for Katarina, because she was one of the elite.
What is it that people expect her to say? That she should have suffered under the Soviet dominance? That she would trade all her success and riches for whatever freedom normal Easterners enjoy now? Come on.
So, she's not going to be a commercial for capitalism. Big deal. Shut up and enjoy the show, and what a show she puts on.

I shall get to work on this thread tommorrow to provide more 'visual aids' for us to determine if she is really a born and bred commie or not!

She's lucky she was a figure skater and not a speed skater or swimmer. The East German forced women in strength sports to take massive doses of steriods to build up muscle mass.

You missed the shots where she is, err, popping out of her outfit. Can't post 'em here though. :-)

It should not surprise anyone that she was loyal.Exactly. Many East Germans long for the good old communist days....they can't get their minds into capitalism and basically live on very generous German welfare. Ms. Witt understands capitalism very well, so she can't be too stupid.

** FILE ** Figure skating star Katarina Witt, seen in this June 3, 2000 file picture in Mainz, Germany, will not block release of 181 pages of secret police files showing she benefited from the former East Germany's communist regime, officials said Wednesday, May 8, 2002. A Berlin court issued an injunction in February preventing release of the pages after Witt objected. But her lawyer told the court she is withdrawing her complaint, according to the government agency administering the files. |

"Can that middle clause be any more irrelevant to the article? "
Actually, I thought that clause was the ONLY relevent thing that was said at all.
