"Bush shoveled thru several popular incentives in Congress, prosecuted crisply the first stages of the War On Terrah (thankew, Jim Lehrer) and now has made a legacy for himself and the entire Western World in only his 16th full month in office - joining hands with Russia in a strategic partnership and ushering the old Cold Bear into NATO. Presidents DIE for this kind of legacy."

Wright is right! is right! The treaty with Russia and getting Russia into NATO is a HUGE plus for Bush. It will play very well with "moderate" voters even if many are only dimly aware of it. Clinton, and the dems generally, must be having a cow.

"I said it here 18 months before the election. Watch this guy. You won't believe how proud you'll be of him as your President. I also said you wouldn't agree with everything he did, but that he is Mr. Big Picture - and you'll like his vision."

Another great observation. If Bush can get close to 60 votes in the Senate after Nov., close enough to twist arms successfully to make 60 when he really needs 60, he will do great things. Common Tator is right and so is Wright is right!.

Bush is a very, very gifted individual politically. He knows what to say and do and what not to say and do and when. Every president makes mistakes (FDR's courtpacking debacle, for example) but Bush knows how to get past his mistakes, recover from them, and learn from them. He has many of the instincts of both Roosevelts and of Reagan. It would have been a tragedy if algore had managed to steal the election, but few people would have understood that because most didn't perceive Bush's strengths.

I wished I had videotaped the 1994 midterms. I won't forget this year. I'm eager to see the look on Terry McAwful's face that night. I'll play it back and pause it and then laugh for about an hour and then rewind and pause it again, and laugh again.

The biggest miscalculation the RATS made

Close. But not quite. Their biggest miscalc is in aggressively pursuing any fight, to mask the lack of driving ideas.

Bush, for all his critics here, has proven time and time again, that He is the Penultimate Master of Political Judo. Over and over, he robs his enemies of ammunition, and turns their attacks back on them. The DOJ lawsuit in FLA. Enron, 9/11, The Economy, Education (why teaming up with Kennedy was significant.....Kennedy got a bit of a bill, Bush got Light years of political mileage...)....

He is living Conan's Dream....."To see your enemies driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women...."

Bush must have been smiling when the FBI released this membo last night:

This is the redacted text of the document, obtained by Fox News:

Drafted by : Redacted

Title: WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION

Personal approval ratings are defined by the question asked: "Please tell me whether you have a generally favorable or generally unfavorable impression of George W. Bush."

It's how they judge him as a person-- versus as a president. The value of this number is two-fold: Americans who view Bush favorably are less inclined to believe stupid Democrap rumors (people believed Monica Lewinsky not Clintoon), and Bush is able to vouch for the character of other candidates (something Clintoon couldn't do).

Oh, you certainly know, they are ferreting out reams of documents from the previous administration. If you go back carefully, through the news in the last two weeks, you'll see announcement after announcement of warnings, all predating Jan 2001. Even the Moussaoui stuff goes back, to x42's watch.

"Common Tator is right and so is Wright is right!."

Common Tator and Wright is right! both are old long-time broadcast vets. There must be something in that bidness that attracts people with good powers of observation... I've never met CT, but in a crowd he would instantly stand out as a broadcaster - at least to me. We tend to be able to spot each other...

Check the topic of the thread. This isn't a discussion of INS procedures and failures, it's a discussion of the stupidity of the Democrats' partisan politics which are failing spectacularly.

"He is the Penultimate Master of Political Judo."

h1, you are one with whom I would almost NEVER lift a finger in argument - but may I offer a minor nit correction. "Penultimate" means "next-to-last." "Ultimate" means "last." The penultimate page of a book is the next-to-last page. In the series of numbers 1-100, 99 is the penultimate member of that series.

Of course, "penultimate" somehow sounds more, uh, learned - while "ultimate" sounds merely pedestrian. Which is, perhaps, why many people reverse the two terms.

Your assessment of Dubya, of course, is what matters most - and it is entirely correct. Bush is only afraid of failure if he cannot learn from it. His aim is to constantly improve and do the work he feels he was destined to do. He genuinely shuns fame, cares little for "posterity." He feels a calling to do what's right. And, with the ability God gives him each day, he gives it everything he has.

Any of us should be proud to do the same.

Michael

Now, we have 49 Republicans (assuming Hutchinson, Smith/Sununu, and Allard remain and we lose no open GOP seat). We also have the following conservative Democrats that can be relied on for most floor votes on bills and nominations: Byrd, Breaux, Nelson (NE), and Miller. That gives us 53 votes. The next set of Democrats we can try to persuade are: Bayh, Johnson (or Thune if he wins), Cleland (or Chambliss if he wins), Conrad, and Dorgan. That gives us 58. If we win in Missouri and Minnesota, that gives us 60!

So, we only need two wins (outside of SD and GA) this fall to basicly have a veto-proof majority on most things. Greg Ganske has a shot at Harkin in Iowa, too, so that's room for error-- and Suzy Terrell could oust Landrieu if she decides to enter the race.

That poll question was different and related to a specific problem and not his overall rating - sorry.

See the earlier posts on this thread. Yes, it was a mistake, but not by me, but rather by Mort Kondracke.

It speaks to how often Harris polls are off, however, that it did not jump out at Mort that he had read it wrong.

Talent has a pretty good shot here in MO if ST. Louis doesn't commit more vote fraud. It will be tight but he has a very good chance.

I wished I had videotaped the 1994 midterms

What a joyous night! My husband and I were running between TVs, marking them off as the talking heads gave the count. I had SUCH fun that night! I hope we see it again this fall!

It was an interesting process to watch, I'll say that - from the initial strikes courtesy of Tommyboy and the junior Senator from New York through the most sympathetic media outlets to the most sympathetic commentators, the seminar callers and the sign-this-prewritten-letter-to-the-editor apparatchiks, it was a classic case of a contrived campaign of publicity. The real problem was that there wasn't much substance after the initial claims, and not enough of what there was, even, pointed at the current administration. And so the bubble burst and instead of the expected groundswell of public outrage we were left with the usual circle of drumbeaters naked in the spotlight all by themselves. The smart ones were the ones who got out of sight first - the ones still banging are too stupid to ever learn.

We could do a thread on that - and my personal favorite. "Decimate" when one means "Devastate." Devastate = destroy. Decimate=reduce by one tenth.
