Independence Day

145 min.

While promoting his 1994 sci-fi film “Stargate,” director Roland Emmerich was asked if he believed in aliens. He said that he believed in “the great `what if.' What if...enormous spaceships hovered over every single city in the world?” Emmerich then said to partner Dean Devlin, “I think I've got our next movie.” The result---this 1996 megahit pitting humankind against extraterrestrials---is propelled by Will Smith as a hotshot fighter pilot and Bill Pullman as a combat-vet President, both of whom are eager to pulverize the invaders. The film won an Oscar for its spectacular special effects. Levinson: Jeff Goldblum. Julius: Judd Hirsch. Marilyn: Mary McDonnell. Constance: Margaret Colin. Casse: Randy Quaid. Gen. Grey: Robert Loggia.

This Insultingly Stupid Movie Physics page is a great review of what is depicted in the flick.

A sample:

'Fortunately, it's possible to outrun the expanding wall of fire from an exploding city on foot and escape unharmed just milliseconds before the fire ball arrives. This assumes that you have a reasonable head start, don't have too far to run before reaching shelter, and are the beautiful girl friend of one of the movie's heroic fighter pilots.

'Unfortunately the physics say otherwise. A flame front several miles wide and hundreds of feet tall would emit an enormous amount of radiant heat. This would sear people well before the fire ball arrived. Those who were sheltered enough to survive the heat would most likely be asphyxiated. The massive fire ball would consume all the oxygen in the area.'

I.D... my pick for the stupidest movie of the decade, and that is a truly remarkable achievement.

Independence Day and Sudden Impact made Irwin Allen look like Shakespeare when put up against old faves Poseidon Adventure and Towering Inferno.

And dont forget that they dropped the aliens shields by introducing a computer virus into the alien network. Those goofy aliens should have been using Macs instead of PCs...JFK

Goldblum uses a Mac laptop in the flick, not an Intel/MS-Windows.

Isn't this where somebody mentions "they shoulda been running Linux!" or something to that effect?

Put me down for "Green Slime" - it's the SciFi flick that kept me peeking between the fingers longest back when I was a kid...

I remember how half the people in the theater cheered when the capitol building was detonated. I'm guessing that's not an isolated experience...

If anyone likes Margaret Colin (white girl who is assistant to the president) she has a pretty good role on Now and Then, on the sci fi channel, sunday at 10 am est.

I remember a few years back when a new TV show, (I think it was called "Sea Quest") arrived.

A critic dubbed it "Voyage to the bottom of the ratings."

Lets see alien invasion force and requisite technology travels 3/4 across the galaxy to be defeated by American 20th century technology-definately in the 'comedy' section at xtro starfleet command

Green Slime. Youngster. You should have seen real sci fi horror. Who can forget Invasion of the Triffids. Where I lived they gave you a free pack of sunflower seeds before going in to see the movie. Triffids were gigantic man eating Sunflowery looking creatures.

Steve McQueen's The Blob was a decent sci fi thiller.

but for my money nothing surpassed two movies for bringing out a youthful cheer should they show up on the movie of the week. Runner up was War of the Worlds and top honors went to THEM, giant irradiated bone crunching ANTS. Them was spellbinding. eheh.

Hey, don't diss Admiral Nelson and Chief Sharky! After alll, SOMEBODY had to send some poor enlisted sunuvagun out to die in that minisub every week.

(Actually, I always wondered how much the Navy paid for those deathtraps. I hope they got the fleet rate.)

;-)
