The doyen of Middle East studies offers an unpc analysis of the malaise of Islam.
Excellent post. Thank you. I love First Things.
And as for Lewis, when I was taking my Islamic history courses 30+ years ago, Lewis was already THE expert.
His understanding of the region is deep and long....
What Went Wrong is an excellent book. I suggest that everyone get a copy and read it. It takes less than a day to get thru it.
The monism of Islam, Lewis suggests, is also evident in its aversion to polyphonic music. In polyphony, voices and instrumentswhether in duets, trios, or full orchestraare following different routes in a common purpose. Different performers play together, from different scores, producing a result that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Music is integral to Christian worship, forbidden in muslim worship. Congregational singing is reputed to be one of the things a muslim invited to your church will find most offensive to his sensibilities. So how best to evangelize muslims?
The year 2525, the scene a library reading room in New York, a mother and child sit discussing history; see here these great towers that once stood down by the harbor. Momma, what happened? The child said. They were destroyed by people who practiced islam.
Mom, what is an islam?
Bump for later reading!
