I'm down with this like four flats on a dump truck, provided that no subject is taboo, e.g. racism, conservatism, Israel, etc.

This sounds like a great idea.

Do you think Ash would be banished today? He wasn't really a snot, and quite frankly Don Morgan's "Ash Alerts" were much more annoying.

I agree with the premise, having reasoned debate among civilized members. I believe the problem is that we just don't run across anyone who meets the "civilized" criterion. They end up either posting false information (not rumor, but blatant falsehoods), or just start name calling. If Jim wants this to be a closed forum, fine by me. I still love the one stop shopping for the news.

I tried and tried with Ash, to no avail. Eschoir was hopeless.

Ash was at least a good guy, reasonably articulate, made a decent argument. We could agree on certain points after we hashed things out.

Eschoir was mostly here to piss people off.

Some people are not salvagable. A+BERT was just too irresponsible with the bottle. Buckeroo can get pretty abrasive but is pretty good sometimes.

There are a lot of people who leave because of the current forum direction. They don't opus; they aren't banned; they just go away.

I earnestly hope that conservative dialogue and those ideas that might challenge the GOP status quo are still embraced and welcome here. Sometimes it seems otherwise.

Hm. I thought I was being disarmingly cheerful.

Okay, I am willing to take you at face value as regards your internal motivations. Consider my comment retracted.

Got it.

IMHO, some are worth the effort, and others need euthanasia.

Yes it would and JimRob is considering it again.

I'm pleased to hear that. Who knows - with a no-holds-barred approach, "The Alley" could become one of FR's most popular and stimulating venues.

"Eschoir was hopeless."

That dude's problems with FR.com were not rationally-based.

I must admit to missing the opportunity to poke barbs at him occasionally...MUD

When the same Freeper is banned, we condemn him to become an antiFreeper

I respectfully disagree. Most NORMAL people, if banned, would never be so obsessive and compulsive as to become an Antifreeper. It takes a very strange psychology to become one of those people. If I got banned -- if you did, if any of us did -- we would move on, get different hobbies, perhaps open a forum, or participate in another forum like this one.

Most of us are not so petty, vindictive, or obsessed as to become one of those Pathetic Wandering Souls.

I agree. I take a certain grim delight in observing the "nuking"
of obvious liberal trolls.

As many of us may miss some of the offensive posts by the banned ones, I'm satisfied to stand behind the moderators decisions. However, if they are banned for differences in opinion rather than the use of profanity, personal attack, racism or violence, I'm all for your rehabilitating suggestion. I will say, when I'm finished reading a particularly horrible article and then refresh the page to see the attack responses, the resulting 'thread deleted' was a bit disappointing. Recently, Mr. Robinson has added the reasons why to the resulting deleted page. This is an excellent and somewhat gratifying feature.

Good point, and imho one of the reasons this forum is so popular.

Some of the last posts by A+ were really out there. I think you are probably correct that the bottle got him.

Probably not. I dunno. Lots of people I don't expect to be banned are, so maybe he would. He was not terribly disruptive, nor was he extremely liberal. On certain things, he was positively conservative.

I hope you are correct.

But most banned/canned and suspended Freepers have my e-mail address and I hear a lot that would even make you blush Laz. : )

Yours is a concept I have fought for, in the case of ash, for just the reasons you bring up, but it was a concept jimrob was not comfortable with. Ash IMHO was one of the most reasoned non-combative, non-combustibles, on FR, but has gone the way of time, as have most of the others. Good luck, it is a concept worth fighting for, but then the choice of who comes or goes is subjective and ultimately in the hands of whose site this is. Skill honing is one of the reasons I ended up here, but not the only reason.
