HE'S A HYPOCRITE WITH GUTLESS STANCE (Tiger Woods)

GULLANE, Scotland - Tiger Woods, who champions himself as a man vehemently against exclusionary policies for reasons of race or anything else, should be ashamed at the gutless straddle-the-fence answer he delivered yesterday to a question about women not being allowed as members of Augusta National. "[Augusta National is] entitled to set up their own rules the way they want them," said Woods, whose early existence in golf was all about opening doors to those like himself who were excluded because of prejudice, emphasized by his first Nike TV commercial that blared against his exclusion from certain golf clubs because of the color of his skin.

Women are a bunch of whiny babies

As well as slow golfers. No wonder they want them as members.

Honestly though, what real bothers me about this whole affair is this...about 4 or 5 years ago, Tiger made the Nike commercial talking about all the courses he had the wrong color of skin to play on. They really pissed me off. Now this. My question is this: Which way is it, Tiger? My gut feeling is that Ole Tiger would say or do anything for a buck and if something isn't scripted, he doesn't have much of an opinion on the subject.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Good for Tiger.

How dare someone insist a private club change their membership rules to suit them?

I hope Augusta National never gives in on this issue.

They gave into letting a black in, and what does he do? He starts campaigning to let women in. I hope they've learned their lesson.

Hell hath no fury like a liberal scorned.

Seems the libs always save their most potent vitriol for blacks who refuse to play ball.

Here we have yet another sports hack who is upset that Tiger won't kowtow to his ideal of what a "professional black athlete" is supposed to be.

God forbid we have another Allen Iverson haul out a pistol and break down someone's door at all hours of the night... (and I'm sure nary a word from most of these so-called journalists)

Three cheers for Tiger. He puts his energy into his game. Period. Just by being there and winning consistently, he's a wonderful example for minority kids. He doesn't need to do another thing and he knows it.

A no-women sports event? Slavery?

Someone needs to set up a fund to keep Mr. Cannizzaro in prozac. It's not gonna come cheap ;).

...second-class golf citizenship...

Golf Citizenship? ok now they're just being silly.

Perhaps the NAGs want to point out a few prospective ladies who would actually make good candidates for membership. Keep in mind that they have to be able to pay the immense membership fees, be agreeable to existing members and happily accept the rules of the club.

Tiger is wise beyond his years. His parents did a good job.

Not true...I think the older guys (e.g., Nicklaus and Palmer) were against the Casey Martin exception.

It's scary that "newspapers" like the NY Post can continue to be viable considering the trash they report.

Go Tiger!

Well if Tiger Woods were constantly whining about the evils of exclusion and then joined an exclusionary club, then he would be a hypocrite. To the best of my knowledge this is not the case. It seems he is minding his own business.

Most sportswriters are Liberial wusses. People have a right to free association, these problems have no problems with women's clubs of various sorts or pc ethnic clubs. I wonder if they think we should be offended if a African American were to exclude whites and asians? What if members of the KKK wanted to march in a NAACP sponsored MLK day parade?, or if mane Operation Rescue members wanted to join NOW?

I've never been a joiner, but the Femanazis should leave Agusta alone and the PC sportswriters should leave Tiger Woods alone. The author here is a pompous buffoon.

I am not a history buff on this subject so I don't know the whole story, but, if golf courses do not allow blacks or asians I think that really is a bigger issue than male or female. There is a physical difference between men and women (thus the "slow golfers"). Race is totally different and discrimination is based on prejudice and nothing else.

You really don't see a difference?

Why doesn't the LPGA let men play?

speaking of whiny sports reporters, I'd bet my last dollar that punk from sports illustrated, rick reilly, will do a classic hand wringing piece from his last page soap box about this. Guranteed. I let my subscription expire years ago because of the way this magazine has deteriorated. I found an old copy from the 70's in my attic and couldnt believe what a great magazine it once was as compared to todays PC, apologistic crap.

Uh, make that anything he CHOOSES to do, whether for a buck, or not. Surely you don't believe Tiger has some obligation to women per Augusta - or any other club for that matter? Where does it stop?

I recall that Tigger was vehemently against a semi handicapped golfer who wanted to use a cart.

Do you want to document that claim? Trust me, it'll be easier (and faster) for you just to say, "I recalled wrong" - because Tiger never took a position on Casey Martin's status.

I used to work a PGA tournament. We played at an all-white country club. Our group elected a black president and the media went crazy over whether they would grant him automatic membership like the other presidents.

He was accepted unanimously. Oddly, he was the first African-American to ever apply to the course. Odd that.

I think every "true" golfer was against that guy.

I wasn't 'against the guy' but I was against a US Federal Court imposing itself and deciding what the rules of golf should be. IMHO, they had no constitutional jurisdiction.

As to women at Augusta National, who cares? This is a non-issue. Some multimillionaire female may eventually join, but that does not mean diddly squat for any of us. That club is totally exclusive and only the super wealthy and connected need apply and most of those are turned down.

It 'discriminates' aganst 99.999% of people and it is perfectly free to do so. It is a private club.

Tiger is the best golfer ever to play the game. He got there through God given talent and hard work. He has been discriminated against and overcome every obstacle. He lets his clubs do his talking. What is so hard to understand? His life's work is golf not civil rights.

I do not have to agree with the Lords of Augusta to respect their right to run a club in the way they see fit. Women's purses in the LPGA tourneys exceed by far what PGA purses were not that long ago.
