Despite a request from black and Hispanic journalists to rescind it, the National Press Club on Monday gave an award to the author of a controversial book that argues that the crusade for diversity in the media has corrupted American journalism.

For every halting step of this sort toward common sense in the news biz you have six or seven or ten away from it -- like (just for one example) this total waste of time and resources by an LA Times reporter gushing over the cult surrounding the movie Xanadu. Press bias, salesmanship, hype, insults to our intelligence -- we don't like it! When will you morons of the fourth estate hear us?

I just finished this book yesterday - and I could have predicted the reactions of those quotees without even reading the article. The book is not tender about stepping on toes - McGowan stomps deliciously on the feet of most of the media, and his research appears to be meticulous. To read the book is to know that the media chorus against it will be loud and painful. "Coloring The News" doesn't miss a single ox in its goring.

A local TV news director with whom I periodically communicate via email mentioned to me yesterday (when I offered to loan him the book if he'd pass it around when done) that one of his co-workers was reading it and that he himself planned to buy a copy on his evening dinner break.

This book is going to stir things up as "Bias" never did. "Bias" was an OK anecdotal read, but "Coloring" is truly a well-researched work that hits paydirt on every page. Anyone in the news biz who really wants to know why readership and viewership is down can find the answer here. In a sentence, the news consumers see a huge disconnect between the world they see and feel and that as described by the news media - and the consumers are turned off by it and vote with their feet.

This book is a must-read.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

the author of a controversial book

At least they didn't call it a "surprise bestseller".

McGowan said Monday that his book ''tackles a very emotionally difficult issue with fairness, historical perspective and compassion.''

And, for that he will be raked over the coals and roundly denounced as a racist.

Richard Prince, a Washington Post editor and member of the National Association of Black Journalists, said the book is full of ''half-truths, spin and inaccuracies and is not worthy of an award from a journalistic organization.''

Juan Gonzalez, a New York Daily News columnist who heads the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, said, ''This insulting book is a poorly argued indictment of the need to ensure diversity in America's newsrooms, in the pages of its newspapers and magazines, and in the images on the nightly news.''

It would appear these devotees of diversity are staunch opponents of diversity in the awarding of book awards.

I find this puzzling.

Which network are they affiliated with and about how large is your market? You don't have to be specific, just an idea. The guy I communicate with here in Nashville is at the NBC affiliate, and he is a very earnest guy in trying to make his news shows a quality product. They are the closest thing there is in this market to an honest news report.

As an example, midst all the recent hue and cry about TN's stopgap state budget, the result of which was some tuition hikes at TN universities, this station had the audacity(!) to run a story that basically said, "Quitcher bitchin.' It's WORSE in every surrounding state including Georgia, and THEY have an income tax AND a lottery." All the other stations had simply aired all the whiners complaining about tuition inching up.

Needless to say, I was quick to send him a congratulatory note. He knows that my biggest beef on bias is the layer of perspective that always seems to be missing from every local news story - a layer of perspective necessary to truly understand it. I told him that THIS story was a perfect example of that necessary layer of perspective, and that all his stories would pop if he'd keep up the good work.

Amazingly, I think he understands.

"Major local in one of the USA top five cities."

'Splains it. He's probably gunning for a network gig. Or he may be working for one of those companies with a big diversity kick.

Good, good, good. Have to get the McGowan book. When we did the press conference for the Patriot's Rally last April, I went to the NPC and looked at the wall with all the plaques that honor people.

Very instructive who they honor.

That has been my sense of it. McGowan's book is much more
serious/scholarly.
