Wednesday, July 31, 2002 10:21 a.m. EDT Rep. Hayworth Condemns Senate's Torricelli Travesty

Rep. J.D. Hayworth, R-Ariz., condemned the U.S. Senate Wednesday morning for failing to hold scandal-scarred Sen. Robert Torricelli, D-N.J., to the same standards the House applied to Rep. James Traficant, D-Ohio, who began serving an eight-year jail sentence on corruption charges on Tuesday after being expelled from the House last week.

"Our action stands in stark contrast to the other body's kid-glove treatment of Torricelli," Hayworth told radio host Don Imus. "My goodness, what are they thinking over there?"

On Tuesday the Senate Ethics Committee announced it was sending Torricelli a letter of "admonishment" for "the appearance of impropriety" in taking tens of thousands of dollars in personal gifts from contributor David Chang, then helping Chang in a business dispute with the South Korean government.

Hayworth noted that it "wasn't a lot of fun" giving Traficant the boot, something the Senate was unwilling to do in the case of the New Jersey Democrat. "You cast a lot of votes in the Congress of the United States, but that was one of the toughest," he told Imus. "I liked [Traficant]. The guy's a friend of mine."

The Arizona Republican urged the voters to take the opportunity of Torricelli's re-election bid this fall to do the job that the Senate would not, telling Imus, "the people of New Jersey have a decision that all of America will watch this November."

Sen. Torricelli is being challenged by New Jersey businessman Doug Forrester, who has promised to make the still-unresolved bribery allegations about the embattled senator the focal point of his campaign.

The most recent poll in the race, commissioned by KYW-TV in Philadelphia last week, shows Forrester tied with Torricelli, with each garnering 43 percent support.

Everyone should call their senators, particularly the RATS, and demand Torricelli's resignation. Make em feel the heat.

What about Robert Rubin, President Clinton's Treasury Secretary from 1995 to 1999. This man is being protected by all democrats especially Joe Lieberman. Sen. Robert Torricelli is an example of Senate back scratching, he needs to go, not be elected and Rubin needs to answer for his part in cooking the Clinton/Gore books while both lied to the nation about their successful economy, it was nothing but hot air and I bet Greenberg knows this.

I'd love to see Hayworth run against McCain in the '04 Senate race. Does anyone know whether unaffiliated voters can vote in the Arizona Republican primary? If the GOP Primary is restricted to Republicans only, Hayworth could take him out, IMHO. If, however, unaffiliated voters can participate, McCain would probably hold on.

Poor Torricelli has suffered enough. Let's leave the man alone, shall we? If we can put enough bucks together, maybe we can afford a retroactive Clinton pardon for him. I'm sure Torrecelli knows some folks who, for a fee, will help fudge the dates and such. Dashole's wife, the bag lady, should be able to help raise cash, that is, if some of the folks in the majority would be willing to rethink their positions on some keep issues. Sure, I know, of course they will if Mrs. Dashol is willing to pay them enough to do so.

Could you imagine what would be appening to Torrecelli today if he was a Republican instead of a crooked dem? They would be dragging him through the streets. Taking bribes as a democrat really isn't a big thing; it is expected.

...Why would he? Despite some political differences, the last I heard was Hayworth and McCain are still good friends.

I have written the two Senators from Texas asking WHY the cowards let Torricelli skate.
One could reasonably draw the conclusion that every Senator is afraid to act because their graft and sins may be uncovered.
As usual the Senate has demonstrated that they believe each of them is above the law.

So you think that you have the same constitutional privledges as a US senator? HA! This smacks of double standard good ole boy back slapping under the table low lifedness. The senate deserves the reputation it has earned. Money will buy you a US senator.
