"Why do the RIAA and musicians want to kill the music recording industry?"
The RIAA wants to kill it because they're morons. The musicians want to kill it so they'll finally make a living wage, even if they "only" sell 100,000 records.
Remember, 100% of the expenses for an album come out of the artist's ~10% of the cut. To make back the $1M it costs to record and promote an album, an artist has to sell $10M (wholesale). After that point, they might make a profit. And the label has recouped its $1M expense, and earned another $9M to boot, before the artist sees a dime.

Oh, I'm all for the "struggling" musician. But, the Don Henley's of the world are a different matter entirely.
It's the RIAA that needs to take a flying leap. I'm afraid that if they get their way that the musician doesn't win anything either.
But, these guys who charge a day's wage for a concert ticket are yesterday's morons looking for the parade.
Now, direct distribution from the musicians? Oh, now that'd be great.
