When Marxism failed, as Arab Nationalism had failed, radical elements gravitated towards Islamism. To a small degree this even happened in the West with the communist ideologue Roger Garaudy, and others. And you're also right that some become Islamists because of the restraints Islamicist regimes impose on trade.

But I'm skeptical of the "communist" elements of traditional Islam. All the Western religions had rules against usury and communal elements in their early years. All of them downgraded trade in their earliest phases.

Thanks for the post. I've been collecting articles about the synthesis between Marxism and radical Islam.

In spite of their significant apparent differences, the two ideologies share the same vital belief--that the individual has no rights--and this belief will continue to bring both ideologies together.

One difference is that Communists don't have apocalyptic views, or beliefs of an afterlife, especially an afterlife where if you had commited murder for the cause, you get extra heavenly benefits - which, in a sense, made Communist states more predictable.

The bottom line is that Islam, like Marxism, is a man made unappologetic form of proselitism. Jews, save for a minority cult from time to time, refuse to proselytise because that is the job of G_d. Christians let G_d proselytise but provide a human mean to do it that is not invasive but mindful of balance of powers so as not to pretend ownership of G_d's word, namely admit your sins politely before asking for something. On the other hand, the muslim is a god proselytising hack in Islam, making it a vicious and heretic religion of pagans and materialist pigs.

An equaly and maybe more enlightning proposition would be that Islam was a form of Marxism preceding Marx by centuries. The main difference being that Muhammad praised traders and belittled farmers, same difference, still a class warfare. Now the Islamists support the farmers and steal the traders in true Marxist tune, same difference.
